So sad to see this go. At least I have my copy of “ Song of the South” to have a memory of it.

Definitely time for an update on this one. It will be interesting to see, specifically, what they do with it.
Cheers.

I remember me and my sister going on it many times. We both had cool shirts from the ride. Long gone, which is too bad.
I also found out there is a 22 minute promotional film, "Ernest goes to Splash Mountain" which you can find on youtube if you are so inclined! He is apparently the first person to ride Splash Mountain. That's what I learned from the video, it's true.
I assume they are doing the California one, too?

The CA Splash Mountain is also being redone, but (AFAIK) a closing date hasn't been announced yet.

My kids loved Splash Mountain growing up. They had to ride multi times each trip. I will admit that I'm not a fan....but I understand why it's sad to see it go.

My eldest and my husband loved Splash Mountain. Personally, it never appealed to me any more than the story it was based on appealed to me (not because of racism but because it was what I designate as 'mean humor'). As I've become older the last few times we've ridden it I didn't feel like I could hear it any more and I am not sure if its the acoustics or my hearings age degenerating (I have the same problem in Frozen). Our younger two didn't care from the drop at the end. Once our middle (who has anxiety issues) realized 2/3 thru that it was the ride with the drop at the end. Being the accommodating parent that I am, I told him, "Well, too late now. Deal." Hmmm, possibly why he has issues. LOL
Anyway, I actually like the Frog Prince and hope Disney does a good job on adapting the ride.

Song of the South was my first every movie. Princess and The Frog was my Daughters First ever movie.
I wholeheartedly disagree with Disney on this move. I can only hope they reverse the decision paths they appear to be moving down. We will see.
Now saying that, I would love to see Tiana's Bayou over on Tom Sawyer Island and turn the Steamwheeler into a Dinner Boat....

I understand why it has to go and I fully support the change, even though we liked the ride. But after I learned more about the history and controversy, I wondered how it ever got built.
If I am remembering correctly, the characters and songs on the ride are based upon a movie which was adapted from a book that was written by a white guy who, while working at a plantation, heard word of mouth stories told by the slaves on the plantation, made them his own, used them for his newspaper column and eventually for a book. The movie contained themes and scenes which suggest that the antebellum African Americans were happier as slaves. The star of the movie couldn't attend the premier because of his skin color. Yet somehow, WDW (they've buried the movie) thought the ride theme was a good idea. Hmm.

Now saying that, I would love to see Tiana's Bayou over on Tom Sawyer Island and turn the Steamwheeler into a Dinner Boat.... They won't. Sorry to say but there is no turning back to the original Splash. Please let's not debate it though. There will be a side like yours who understandably fight it. There will be the others who also understandably say it never should have been made a ride in the first place. Neither side agrees. They never will. I've watched the movie and also saw it with my son. Knowing histories allowed for good conversations to be had about the history of the books and movies. I'm never a fan of censoring but I do see why some wanted this closed vault. What we knew in the past is different than now. I admit as time went on this ride faded with me. The disrepair and the smell. Wasn't a fan. Never minded if I missed it. I do hope it is better cared for than the original. I mean Pirates was never this bad and a similar type of ride. Yet somehow, WDW (they've buried the movie) thought the ride theme was a good idea. Hmm. You are pretty correct. This actually has come up in a lot of academic discussions too we likely don't need to get into. The end result led to an author having a white view of slavery and taking some stories and making them with that flavor. To give 100% credit at the time he wasn't trying to do harm and he felt he was helping. Some tropes were just too deep to overcome and some stereotypes lingered. Many things in history are viewed through the one in control's eyes and we get to try to learn all views. I said in my post above some really understandably don't know how this ride was made when it was. I tend to agree but also understand other view points. Lots we can learn about by listening to others

Their egos will not allow them to admit error. I mean in general... Their path is off... we will see if they return to anti political positions. As for Pirates, my family and I still yell.. "We Wants The Redhead" at a certain point in that ride.

I'll mostly miss the songs but I'll reserve judgment on the change until after I see it. It could be great. At DL it makes sense to just continue the New Orleans square theme, get rid of Critter Country altogether and make it the New Orleans bayou.
