I hate flying, terrible phobia of mine, and I rarely do it, but when I do, it's almost always SWA. I know it's irrational...and I need to get over it....I don't mind the open seating. When I do fly, I'm almost always solo, and I head straight to the back, for an aisle seat, like 2, maybe 3 rows up from the bathroom. I"m never in a hurry to get off, luggage is rarely even out when I get there. One flight, I did the online checkin, got a boarding group A, and went straight back when we loaded, I was the only one back there for quite a while, am sure the flight attendants back there thought I was crazy. But I can totally see why it might be hard for families to sit together, etc. and it was a pain to remember to check in 24 hours ahead. I do really need an aisle seat for constant getting up and down. Not sure if it will help but have you ever asked to see the cockpit and speak with the pilots? Sometimes that helps with nervous fliers as it humanize the pilots: they have spouses/kids/families/etc that they want to go home to as well. Sometimes that realization helps to settle one's mind.

We’ve never flown SW because they don’t offer direct routes from our preferred airport. That said, the open seating process concerned me. I like to know where I need to be and not deal with others fighting for position lol.

We have used Southwest and the Chase card for many years as we have been fortunate enough to earn Companion Pass during that time. I am more than happy to pick my own seat considering I am flying "free". But its just the two of us - I understand the pressure if you have a family to get seated.

SWA allows pre-board for people with disabilities. Over the years, that those in the pre-board line has grown and grown, similar to the Disney and the DAS. Am I judging, yes.....but I am also basing this on my many years experience of flying and watching trends. Why pay for an upgrade, when you can fake an injury and be among the first to board. On some flights this past year, I have seen upwards of 20-30 pre-boarding our flight. On my last flight to Orlando (last week), I kid you not, there were at least 40 people that used the pre-board line. Also, an amazing miracle during our flight.....There were about 17 wheelchairs required to board, but only two were needed upon landing in MCO.....Miracles do happen!!!

Yeah, I've seen this miracle mentioned a couple of times in my travel blog. People definitely abuse disability boarding.
With that said, my 92-year-old (in one week) mother-in-law will take a wheelchair to the gate. She will then pre-board, almost always without the wheelchair, and then not use one to leave as she's not in a hurry and can get out of the way of others in the jetbridge. So, there are legit cases. But not all 40 of them.
Cheers.

DH use to be driven crazy by the cheerleaders who would leave one person in line to hold space and then massively descend when the boarding was called. Now he's driven crazy by the wheel chairs. On our last SW flight they actually announced people in wheelchair who could walk down are encouraged to do so. DH just turned and stared at me in frustration. LOL
The airlines we have to select a seat - Frontier and American - are the ones we've had problems retaining our selected seat. I told one lady, "You're not going to have much luck retaining that seat". She answered but I didn't both responding as I'd figure he'd deal. She and another woman ending up moving their seats. Whatever. (For some reason I always get a higher boarding than the people with which I fly. Now, I just wait and board with them.)

Mine were lower than expected for ours. But for future i realize we already pay EB check in so what's the same for a seat assignment? That was up to $25 each...

Flights are high! When are they switching? If you pull up flights in March, they are not offering early bird, but I saw no seat selection, so I did not book. For other airlines, you can pick your seat before making a purchase. I would not buy and then pick seats at the 24-hour mark; no way would that work or be fair to me.
