I'm just learning about all things DVC so apologies if this has been asked before!
My mom has had a DVC contract (Boardwalk Villas) since 1998 when my brother and I were young. Now that my brother and I are adults, we have been added as "Associate Members" to her contract. Her name is the only name on the deed. When you look on the DVC site, my brother and I are listed as "Associate" and she is listed as "Purchaser". As far as I understand, adding us as associates just allows my brother and I to log in online and make reservations using the DVC points but does not come with a blue membership card and we shouldn't be eligible for the member benefits.
However, I recently went on my first trip to Disney World since being added as an associate. In the Disney World app, I was listed as a DVC member and able to add a digital membership card to my wallet. It has my name on it and says DVC-Y which seems to mean I receive all the member benefits. Sadly I didn't have a chance to test it out on this trip and see if I received the discount or got into member lounges. I did have a purple/pink light whenever I'd enter the park which my friend said he was pretty sure is for being a DVC member.
Has anyone experienced this before? Is it something we're maybe grandfathered into because our contract is so old? Or could it just be an error and Disney's system is just messing up in recognizing me as a member?
My mom was planning to change the contract into the name of her revocable living trust soon for estate planning purposes, but I'm worried changing the title might cause my brother and I to lose whatever special status we seem to have. Any experience or insight would be appreciated!

Any experience or insight would be appreciated! We just went through our estate planning (much later than we should have ) and, rather than put the DVC timeshare in the name of the trust, we added my sister-in-law and niece to the title directly. If something were to happen to us, they would definitely want it and this way it is just theirs with no process to undergo. And they should now get blue cards for the length of the contract since this is grandfathered resale.
Cheers.

Interesting. You shouldn't be able to get DVC-Y. Contract type really doesn't have as much to do with contracts and how old as to how the contract is deeded. I tried to see if any others reported this but so far I haven't seen it.
Changing titles like this won't affect the status of the contract & perks either. Only when selling it can it change.

Cheers.

Yes it should.

As long as the names on the deed reflect their names, they become full members like you.

I'm also an Associate Member and my Disney MagicMobile Pass has "DVC-Y" on it. You will get any applicable DVC Discounts, although you are not truly entitled to them. MDE seems to ignore Member Types (purchaser vs. associate) when you add a Disney MagicMobile Pass to your smartphone, but does know if your membership is eligible for Membership Extras.
I've not tried to access the Member Lounge on my own, but I don't believe Associates would have access as DVC verifies lounge access differently then just a visual scan of a screen on the members smartphone. Also, the page for the temporary membership card on the DVC website is not accessible by Associate Members.

Certainly there's more info coded into the QR, but I would think that the DVC-Y would be the relevant part, and likely in the QR code as well. But, until someone in this boat tries. we won't know.
Cheers.

I tried to see if others had reported this in either no one is talking about it or this doesn't happen to everybody. I wonder if this is just more of a hidden secret that no one wants to talk about? I have no idea.

So which is easier - adding an associate or a purchaser? We plan to do this with the girls but I want to make sure they're done with their house purchases. Youngest sold her townhome in 6 days for asking and now is trying to purchase a single home. The oldest doesn't want to move but geez her house is small for a family of 5. Any way I'm thinking by this summer we should add them to BLT & AK.

Adding a purchaser requires a new deed plus any associated costs with creating and filing that deed. Associate Members have no financial interest and can be removed at anytime.

They used it for something with DVC - cannot remember what. Maybe it was the lounge? I don't recall which but someone did once. So which is easier - adding an associate or a purchaser? Keep in mind associates shouldn't get perks if that's what you're going for. It only gives rights to making reservations and purchasing dining plan.

Very interesting, thanks for the info everyone! It's true I can't see the temporary membership card on the website when I'm logged into my account as an associate. It makes sense that you may be able to get perks you aren't technically entitled to if they are just looking at the digital wallet member card and not scanning it, but that a scan would reveal it's not eligible.
I'm curious about everyone's experience adding adult children/family directly to the deed instead of doing it through a trust. The reason my mom wanted to do it through the trust is that it avoids probate and protects it from creditors, divorce, etc. if one of the adult kids experienced that. Does it still avoid probate if the adult kids are directly added to the deed? Or is probate still necessary to determine who my mom intended to leave her 1/3rd share to? Would we need enough points that 1/3 of the contract is enough points to get all the benefits or would they consider us all as owning the full contract?
