Roofers came this morning; I hear an army of booted-feet stomping around on my roof, and stuff falling into the dumpster in the driveway.
Which reminds me of a humorous anecdote that always pops into my mind: In my past life of driving school bus, I had a lot of little kids that were not originally from this country. We drove by an apartment complex that was getting a new roof, a dozen guys were up there ripping off the old stuff. The kids liked seeing this, and one yelled, "Look! They are destroying that house!" Still makes me laugh

Rain caused a birthday celebration delay due to threatened flooding. Two years ago our eldest's town flooded and they just opened the community playground. Luckily all the threats never came to fruition so the party's on for tonight. Of course, as Brian says above, it is freaking Monday so the party's not until evening. With babysitting Tuesday, the last activity I want is an evening party. Not to mention with DS not driving getting him to and from work will be problematic. Busy evening ahead. Stupid weather. On a positive note, it was slightly cool this AM. I know you're in PA, not sure where. I saw the rainfall totals yesterday in some areas west and/or north of Philly. 9-10". That's crazy.

In contrast, where I am in Minnesota it hasn't rained for a long long time. On the other hand, I'm saving a fortune on fuel for my mower; I've mowed twice this whole year. Usually I have to mow every four days starting in May.

The vast majority of my work comes from a local kitchen and bath store. They sell all the products and have a program where they can even bid the labor. Occasionally someone needs to go out and look over a job because of peculiar situations. I'm 1 of 3 contractors who work like this for the same store. I'm the "kid" on the job with only 30+ years. It's worked very well for a long time. As an "end user", this sounds like the way I would want it done. Some things ARE specialized, though, so bringing that stuff in is almost a must, like the flooring: we had sheet vinyl and they ripped that up and put real hardwood, weaved in and matched perfectly with the rest of the house from 1957. So that's cool. Took them two weeks, though, no way I could do that Countertop: We decided on Cambria. Obviously I can't do that myself, either... I install a lot of prefinished hardwood but never more than a few pieces of raw wood flooring. I have a friend who does all the refinishing. Sheet vinyl I avoid. One small slit and I’ve ruined a whole floor. We have Cambria and butcher block in our kitchen.

One small slit and I’ve ruined a whole floor. We have Cambria and butcher block in our kitchen. Our house had gorgeous hardwood when we moved in. We periodically get it refinished.
They had added two rooms on the back that are not on the foundation, but cantilevered along with the deck. These were carpeted. We took that up and hard hardwood (not as thick or good as the 1958 stuff) installed. Over time rain had leaked in from sliding glass doors in these rooms and damaged some of the slate. I got a new box of the wood, found appropriate sizes and pulled up the old, replacing with the new.
I did not bother to get an airgun since was maybe 10-12 pieces, but just used a hand tool to push the brads into the floor. Interesting exercise that
Cheers.

(not as thick or good as the 1958 stuff) When they put down the new wood here, it is the exact same dimensions, but as a wood guy I can see the difference in the grain. The old stuff looks to be more of a "rift sawn" with some quarter sawn thrown in (much more expensive) and the new stuff looks all like normal flat sawn - the way they do it these days, not as expensive. I don't like the grain as much. I can see it but I'm hoping my wife will never notice Borrowed this image from the web to demonstrate:

That’s a great explanation of the various cuts.

Thanks for the photo. That’s a great explanation of the various cuts. Back to the wood for just a second, when you look at all the nicest vintage furniture from maybe the Craftsman period or "arts and crafts" or "Greene and Greene" sometimes people will say...you almost always also hear the term "quarter-sawn white oak". It just cost more to have men cut up the logs and analyze each chunk and figure out which way to run it through the saw to create the lumber that they wanted for that furniture. It wasn't as much of a problem, though, when you could buy a man for a dollar a day or whatever. Labor is much more expensive now, so they just lay the logs on the saw and it goes back and forth like slicing bread, and you get that "flat sawn" or "plain sawn" grain we see in oak cabinets of these days and the last few decades. Even more so, most of the time they are oak-veneered plywood, and the most cost effective way to cut the veneers is, believe it or not, they spin the log and peel the wood off with a huge blade, like unrolling a roll of wrapping paper. That creates a grain pattern even more yucky in my opinion, but you see it everywhere.

Yes, the rain was intense. We've just finished siding the house from the 2021 hail storm and sure nuff we get small hail. DH was running around the house checking the siding. OMG. As for PA location, my mother use to say 'we're 10 miles from Billy Penn's hat' - NW of Philly. We only had 3+ inches. It was enough.
