Sort of, but I feel the need to celebrate now that my incredibly indecisive son has finally decided to commit to UC Irvine which is about 20 minutes from Disneyland. He'll start in the fall so now I'm scouting out weekends to visit and tack on an extra day or two for a Disneyland pit stop.
It has been a pretty stressful application season. I had no idea how competitive the UC schools have become for admission. Many of his friends weren't accepted to any despite 4.0+ GPAs so we are grateful he had options but choices paralyze him. When we go out to eat we need to get him the menu an hour before we arrive or we'll all starve before he finally decides on anything.
Of course, he may change his mind if one of his waitlist schools come through but for now at least a choice has been made. *sigh of relief*

congrats!
My son is heading for college this fall as well, but he's staying closer to home - a little over an hour away.

Congratulations to your son! As you noted, the UCs generally no longer work as “safe” choices, so your son should be proud t9 have been accepted. Did you nudge your son to make this choice by offering a Magic Key pass? Will you be getting one?

Ha! I may have mentioned it but unfortunately only the top pass is available for purchase and I’m not sure we or he would be able to go often enough to justify the costs. Also, he won’t have a car the first year and taking a taxi back and forth would cost a fortune. However if he makes friends with a Disney fan with a car we might consider a pass for him. I can use his 529 for that, right? 😂

Congrats to you and your son for getting into UCI! Go Anteaters, "ZOT"
The UCs can be tough to get into. My daughter went to UCSB with a 4.0+. and AP classes but it really help that she was an athlete (swimming). UCSB usually battled UCI for the top spot in the Big West swimming championships before UCI dropped the swimming programs.

Congratulations. I remember those days. Our eldest was our most driven but her grades were never more than average. I remember all the packets we sent to the schools. She ended up at a nice venue, which seemed to always give her a 'in' on the job market. Interesting to us, as PA residents, it was all our state schools that dragged their feet to accept her. Then stopping all the phone calls, even though we returned all the mailers indicating she was accepted elsewhere, was a serious PITA.

UCs no longer accept SAT scores and rely on a holistic review but with so many applications I can’t imagine they give more than a minute of consideration to the applications. I expected him to get into UCSB and waitlisted at UCI but the opposite happened. Both schools have gotten more competitive and have climbed the rankings in the past few years. He prefers UCSB and if he ends up getting off the waitlist soon he will likely go there instead of UCI.

The saga continues, he got off the UCSB waitlist yesterday and UCSD is still in play so back to the decision process for another week. I'm really going to need a trip to Disneyland after this. Also, assuming he passes on UCI I'm now out a deposit the equivalent of a 2 day pass at DL.

Not that the Washington system is any better...just smaller.

Also, assuming he passes on UCI I'm now out a deposit the equivalent of a 2 day pass at DL. In the long run, of course, it probably won’t matter because they are all good schools and he will likely do well at any of them. Just sayin’, UCSB is only a couple of hours from Disneyland, close enough to visit but nit so close that an AP makes sense. Think of this time as his last chance to really and truly drive you crazy!
