Finally recuperating from our Alaska trip and have some time to post a few things about our Alaska trip. Overall it was a great experience. As with all trips, there are things that were great, needs improvement, and one chaotic experience. We sailed the Norwegian Encore, which is one of the newer ships with NCL. Posted capacity is around 3200 ( two in a cabin), but our actual passenger capacity was over 4200! Obviously many cabins with three and four passengers. There were very few children on board. Anytime we saw them was at dinner, and average age was 3-4 yrs old. The waters were very calm, even as we sailed in the Pacific. Supposedly this was due to the fact that the ship cruises very close to the coastline. Here is a picture of our second day on the ship, and a sea day.

Once we docked, I was able to get a few more pictures. The ship in front of us was Holland America Westerdam. Next up, Mendenhall Glacier.

Next day was Skagway. To be honest, all the mountains look the same! We got our pic by the famous Alaska/Canadian border. It was a narrated bus ride all through the mountains parallel to the train tracks. We didn’t do any shopping in the little town. It was all man made for the tourists, nothing local to see. Here are a couple of pics at the border.

Glacier Bay….. The talks by the National Park rangers started early. You were able to hear their commentary over the TV. We had a balcony, and saw most of the glaciers from there. This was the coldest port, yet still not that cold. Juneau was 60 degrees. Skagway was 58 degrees. Sunny both days. Glacier Bay was in the 40’s. Really nothing then our everyday temps in southern PA. Wear a hat and gloves, that’s all the extra you need. We spent from 8a-12p in the bay with the ship rotating so all sides could see. We saw three famous glaciers but we don’t remember the names ( have to look them up). I took pictures of them we did see calving three times. Rather sad as you know the glaciers are melting away. The Park Rangers sold items from a table set up in the observation lounge. Get there early, like by 7:30am. Almost everything was gone by the time we moseyed up at 11:00 am.

Ketchikan……
This was our only rainy day. It did not rain hard, and it was not really cold. Wearing a light raincoat layering with a sweatshirt and shirt underneath was plenty warm. This was the best shopping area. Still most of the stores sell the same thing. Do not buy at the “ Outlet “ store. Other stores have the same stuff cheaper. Walking further into the port area had stores that were even more expensive.
With NCL, you will need to take a free shuttle over to the Ketchikan area. It is about a 20 minute drive. Kind of a pain since this was a very short port day and you had to be back on the boat by 12:30p. The last shuttle back to the boat was 11:30a, so not much time there at all.

Victoria, BC……
Our ship did not arrive to Canada until 8:00pm! All back on board by 11:30p so really a wasted port stop for an excursion. The next day was disembarkation day so we just hung out on the boat and packed.
