I used to post at Mouseowners. I found my way here. We haven't been in Disney in well over 6 years. Each trip has been canceled for one reason or another. I know that a lot has changed since our last visit to the point where the planning sounds overwhelming. We are thinking of etching in some resort time if we do a trip. We currently have the Riviera booked, but might try to change it. I was curious to know if anyone has ever gotten a surprise upgrade using DVC points? I recall others in the past saying that this doesn't typically happen unless there is a maintenance issue. Has anyone ever experienced being upgraded?

I only recall getting upgraded once since we purchased in 2007. That was just last August at AKV Kidani Village where we reserved a standard view studio and got a standard view 1-bedroom. Did online check in and went direct to room upon arrival at the resort, so no interaction with front desk. It was only a one night stay (were local) to attend the DAK Moonlight Magic event.

No upgrades for me but I would say staying at the Riviera is a nice choice with or without an upgrade ! Enjoy!

Upgrades in DVC rooms are due to inventory issues only. For a while after reopening it was more common as they moved people around.
I've been upgraded once in my almost 20 years of ownership.

I don't think about upgrades. It's happened 2-3 times (not DVC, regular WDW rooms) since 1997. It's not something you can make happen. There are no magic words to say at the front desk to increase your chance. Those "What to do to increase your odds of a free upgrade" discussions on other sites are always...interesting.

Yes....We have gotten room upgrades while staying on DVC points. The last upgrade was last year. We had a 1-bedroom booked and was upgraded to a 2-bedroom. We have also gotten upgrades with views. Our last Riviera stay we got upgraded from standard view to a preferred view.
Being away for six years.....Wow, you have much to learn and much to see.

We stayed once, then bought 200 points. We stayed a few more times and added on another 275 points. Its that nice!

So, it sounds like I should be sticking with Riviera...are there any good views with the standard rooms?

Not sure about the standard views - I have only gotten a parking lot view.

Based on some videos I watched- it seems like Poly, Boulder, and GF have nicer views when getting a standard studio compared to Riviera's standard. After not having been in quite some time- all hotels look amazing.

We were upgraded from a standard studio at VGF to a 1 bedroom lagoon view once. We found out it was because there was an emergency issue with our assigned room that had to be pulled from service and that was what was available for the 3 nights we were booked there. We appreciated the upgrade but again it only happened because of unexpected inventory issues.

On our trip at Christmas we had a 2-bed standard view booked at BLT.
When I saw the room number in MDE I realised we’d been upgraded to Lake view because we were on the 9th floor. My request had been for a view of Bay Lake and we definitely had that!

We have been members since 1997, I never have received an upgrade. We do book a two bedroom through the years. So not really room for upgrading. If booking a resort with view options I book the view option vs standard view so I guess no room for an upgrade there. Overall it seems upgrades don’t happen frequently. I just get nothing… once I did get a car rental upgrade, yay because they didn’t have my car available so they gave u a Jeep SUV, that’s about it in my life without upgrades, lol.
