Thanks for another great trip report, Sue. Your trip reports have been a real lifesaver for me since due to my husband’s serious illness I have not been to WDW in two years. Right now I’m hoping to plan a visit next year. So thanks again for your enjoyable reports.
I hope your next trip exceeds all your expectations. Sounds like you deserve it!
DAY 4 – Sunday 7/02/23
Who: Sue (64), DVC Member
Holli (58), friend
Plan: Pool,
Actual: Last night Holli suggested we go to Geyser Point Grill for a glass of wine and some appetizer before the fireworks and Electrical Water Pageant, and I agreed that was a good idea. We headed down sometime before 8:30 and were able to get a table for 2 with cushioned seats by the lake. The seats were so comfortable! We ordered wine (merlot for Holli, Pinot Gris for me) and the cheesy brisket with house made chips. Everything came quickly and we settled the check once the brisket arrived.
The Disney Food Blog had reviewed this menu and said the cheesy brisket was great but was a small portion for the money. We disagreed with the portion being small – we thought it was plenty and just fine for the 2 of us. If an individual was ordering it we both felt that could be a meal. Everything about the dish was perfect – the cheese, the brisket and the chips. It was wonderful!
Just before 9:20 we took the rest of our wine (served in plastic cups) to the walkway just outside and watched the fireworks from Magic Kingdom. The soundtrack is piped in, so that was nice. The fireworks are not visible from within Geyser Point. Once the fireworks ended the Electrical Water Pageant started right up and we had an unobstructed view of that. I never tire of seeing this and Holli can’t believe she lived her whole life going to Disney and never knew of this. I explained the reason for that is she never did Disney right – her family did day trips where they drove over, stayed in a park until it closed, and then drove home. There’s so much more to Disney than the parks!
After Electrical Water Pageant we went upstairs to the villa. Holli asked if it would be ok if we went to the pool early and then did the 1-hour walking tour as a break from the pool. She’s thinking we’re not chair hogs if we’re actually using the space and then disappear for a while before returning and I agreed. Probably the hour or so before the tour will be the most pleasant part of our pool time, and after the tour we’ll most likely need to stay in the water to be comfortable.
I turned in around 10:30 and got up at 5. I made my cappuccino and took it back to bed while doing online stuff. I could hear Holli closing the murphy bed around 6:45 and went out to join her in the living room. I decided to skip making breakfast in the villa and instead pick up something from Roaring Fork a bit later. I threw a small load of laundry in the washing machine to get that over with.
We were down at the pool by 7:15. Our next-door cabana neighbors were already there and a couple had a pair of twins who looked to be about a year old swimming. They’ve obviously had infant swimming lessons, and Holli said it was pretty cool to see (I was out of sight range). We spent the next 1.5 hours on our chaise lounges doing some reading. It was actually somewhat comfortable early in the morning. We were doing the architectural tour at 9 and didn’t want to show up wet so we saved the pool for later.
About 10 minutes before 9 we walked over to the fireplace outside Whispering Canyon. One other lady was already there and she asked if we were doing the tour. She was wearing a Disneyland t-shirt and seemed like a big Disney fan. Ranger Alan showed up and introduced himself. He grew up next to Disneyland, and even spoke to Walt on the phone one day when as a kid he’d keep calling Walt’s company location to find out when Disneyland was going to open. Once it opened he and his friends spent weekends there – and after he retired he settled here and works Saturday & Sunday at the Lodge. He’s a huge Disney fan and clearly loves his job.
As much as I liked Ranger Alan and many of his stories, I was a bit concerned when he said the tour would last an hour & 20 minutes or longer since he talks a lot. It’s billed as ONE hour and that’s what we signed up for. He spent a lot of time covering the history of railroads in the USA, how people eventually moved from the east to the west in the 1800’s and frankly that wasn’t what I expected or wanted. Anytime we were outside we shifted into whatever shade was available since it was so freakin’ hot out there.
Ranger Alan pointed out details I had not noticed before, such as the different colors of pavement, which represent the different railroad lines of the past. Eventually we moved inside at Boulder Ridge and spent quite a bit of time in the villas lobby and the train room. Again, he shared fun details about Walt. This part was really good, but by now it was nearly 10:15. I was ready to get something to eat and didn’t want Roaring Fork to run out of the big cinnamon rolls before I got there.
We headed back into Wilderness Lodge and I apologized to Ranger Alan for leaving the tour early and thanked him for all of his great information. He was very gracious and didn’t seem bothered, thank goodness. Holli took advantage of the opportunity and also left, saying “thank you Sue” once we were out of earshot.
She headed to back to our pool and I went to Roaring Fork. They had the cinnamon rolls in the warmer, just under the gigantic bear claws. I didn’t see any carryout container, but a cast member brought me an entrée box. The darn cinnamon roll practically filled the box! I paid for it but didn’t notice until hours later it was $8.99. Being so big that kind of makes sense – this is meant to be shared!
Back at the pool I went over to where Holli was reading in the pool and showed it to her. She was amazed! It wasn’t long after I sat in the cabana that she showed up wanting to try it, even though before I got it she said she didn’t want anything to eat <g>. I’d been smart enough to grab 2 plates, 2 forks and a knife, lol! She cut off a piece and between us I don’t think we ate half of it. It was very good, however. After that I managed to get the box closed, but just barely.
We spent most of our time in the pool since it was so hot, but I also would use my chaise lounge for about 15 minutes at a time. By late morning the pool had gotten pretty busy. Earlier this morning cast members were setting up 4th of July decorations around the resort, which made it look festive. Cast member Dorothy was working today getting drinks and food (from Geyser Point) for anyone at the pool. She really hustled and was constantly seen with a tray full of drinks while carrying a bag or two of food for people.
Around noon or a little after Holli went upstairs to take her shower, I stayed on my chaise lounge a while longer and then spent time in the cabana. When I eventually got up and started gathering up my stuff a woman from across the way came over and I asked her if she’d like to take the cabana. I offered to stay here until she got some of her stuff, but she said her daughter was gathering it up so she stayed in the cabana waiting for daughter. I wished her well and headed up to the villa. Housekeeping hasn’t come to do trash & towel yet, so I moved all the dirty towels into the living room just in case they showed up while I was showering (they did not).
Holli poured some wine and finished her turtle cookie – she swears they paired together excellently. I’ve got a little of mine left but eating it with wine just doesn’t sound good to me. After dressing and blow drying my hair I joined Holli in the living room and updated the report while enjoying a glass of wine. She had Match Me Abroad on the tv, so we both watched that trainwreck of a reality show.
Around 4 we headed out with the Hidden Mickey Scavenger Hunt sheet. We needed to find three remaining locations. They were all in Wilderness Lodge and today we found them fairly quickly. The other day we had no clue whatsoever on 2 out of the 3. Once that was done we turned the paper in at the front desk and received another pin plus a wooden nickel.
We went to Territory Lounge and I was surprised to find that it wasn’t busy yet. We took a table for 2 along the wall. Only a few other tables were occupied at this point. Later it got busier but never filled while we were there. Our server was excellent and took good care of us – he aimed to please. We ordered wine – merlot for Holli and sauvignon blanc for me. The menu has a number of food items but frankly none of them appeal to me other than the artisanal cheese & charcuterie board. I’d shared this with Chris & Amanda last year and it was very good. That’s what we ordered tonight.
When it arrived we were both impressed – both for the quality and variety of the meats and cheeses. Compared to cheese/charcuterie boards we’ve experienced outside of Disney this was an exceptional value too. Who would ever imagine Disney and value would be used in the same sentence? There were four meats – capicola, bresaola, salami and prosciutto. There were four cheeses – blue cheese, seahive beehive, some type of cheddar and salted natural mozzarella. In addition, there was a bunch of grapes, several small pickles, some cauliflower & carrots and honey & honeycomb. There were also several sesame flatbread crackers. Holli discovered the honey paired well with the blue cheese, which she normally doesn’t like. I liked the bresaola, all cheeses except blue cheese, the pickles and grapes.
It was a fabulous spread, and I looked on Amazon to find a similar serving apparatus for our future faux concierge lounges. I didn’t buy it just yet but put it on my wish list for future consideration. We left there somewhere between 6:30 and 7 and decided to walk it down a bit. We walked out past the cabins on the Magic Kingdom side then turned around and continued to the rest of the cabins before returning to the villa. Holli is choosing 90 Day Fiance over seeing the fireworks and Electrical Water Pageant again, so we’re in for the night. I can catch them for the last time tomorrow night. We changed into more comfortable/sloppy clothes and sat in the living room waiting for 90 Day Fiance to come on.
Today was another wonderful day – it’s been great being here! The tour ran longer than I would have wanted, but the lesson is not to do these type things during pool weather. Just like in Hilton Head, Mike the pool guy does great tours, but I’m only interested in doing them in January when it’s too cold to be laying on the beach.
Tomorrow Holli is headed home early to do some cooking before joining her family for their July 3rd barbecue & fireworks. I’ll spend the morning at the pool, relishing every last minute here!
