In the 23 years of ownership, we have only cancelled once but ended up rebooking same dates again. Another time we were not sure if my son and DIL were going to be able to keep a reservation but it all worked out in the end.
When we started to book Feb./March, we worried once or twice for our elderly and/or sick parents (more so my in-laws since my husband was the only one taking care of them/then his mom).

Use year dosen't matter when booking. If you have a February use year and want to book March of 2024 you can do it in April of 2023 (11 months before your trip). DVC knows that your points will be there so you don't have to wait til they load onto your account. Yep this is easy to not understand when new; I remember having problems a little bit. You don't need the points when you book, they just have to be there by the time your vacation comes. For instance if you have a February use year, on Feb 1 your account will get loaded with your yearly allotment of points and you can feel free to start a vacation on Feb 1 using those points. The reservation for that trip will have obviously been made months in advance, when you did not have any points. This is ignoring any banking/borrowing

December or February are probably the optimal use years for spring vacation (February, March, April)

I hope it is okay to continue to try to figure this out …and this is more for me than for the original poster… Because every year I think I understand and then panic when I try to modify . Pretending My Use Year is Feb . I have 2024 points … I can book 11 months in advance of my actual arrival date and can not make any alterations or modifications outside of the 31 day cancellation period. I can bank points or borrow points but the risk increases because those points will become part of the Use Year I modified if I fail to follow the cancel before 31 days ..So those 2024 points must be cancelled so they remain in the 2024 useyear Otherwise they would be put into Holding and become more restricted . And they can not be available to move them or bank them or borrow anymore. . They will remain in the 2024 Use Year and must be used within your 12 month use year which would be Feb until Jan 31. A problem does not exist if you cancel according to the 31 days before arrival and points automatically return to their correct use years. That is why it is important to understand the terms of the contract and can be slightly confusing.
DVC also has a policy offered to purchase 24 points once yearly if you need a few more points.
Is that correct ? I actually just went to try to modify online but got nervous about completing the transaction . And figured I would just call but then that date for the holidays will probably not be available. I kinda think the contracts page that popped up online , I had to choose didn’t look correct.

If my family typically vacations at WDW in spring (late March to early May), can someone please explain the best use year for a contract and why? Something to do with cancelling a vacation close to when points expire, at which time you are no longer able to bank the points??? You've pretty much got it. If you mostly want March thru May, then a Feb UY would be fine. Pros: It's best for Feb thru May, good for summer. Cons: It's worst for the holidays, Oct-Jan. With a Feb UY, your 8-month banking deadline would be the end of Sep. You'll get to know that date well. You can bank the points you get in Feb, each year, up until the last day of Sep. As long as you cancel and bank by 9/30, there really isn't a drawback. Say you do book a holiday trip. Are you really going to cancel a Dec trip after Sep? Only 2 mo before? If you need that immediate flexibility then DVC isn't right for you in the first place. So as long as you cancel by Sep, you can bank. That's the most important takeaway. If you've used banked or borrowed points, it's more restrictive. Banked or borrowed points can't be banked again, period, no matter when it is. Therefore if you cancel that holiday trip, you could only rebook something else with those banked or borrowed points thru the end of your UY (Jan 31). See, your trip fell at the end of your UY, thus you don't have much time to book something else if you cancel. A June UY would be worst for you. You'd consistently be booking trips at the end of your year. You'll find that you're often working with points that are banked, borrowed, or some combination, so it's good to have your trips earlier in your UY. Don't overthink it tho... it's not going to alter your experience much one way or another, besides understanding your banking deadline, and when you have to use points by. Every UY will have a different few mo that are less than optimal and it's splitting hairs as to whether there's real risk.
