For the past 3 years I have toyed with selling some of our 700 points of DVC we have accumulated. The Cash in an investment right now with the market down could double when the market rebounds.
What has held me off (well other than the death threats from my DD15) has been I think I can turn that 700 points into over 30 nights at DVC resorts every January or February after retirement which would be warmer than our SC Beach condo.
Anyone else thinking about a partial stay model at DVC when they retire? Other plans for use of it in retirement?

Good thread.
Mrs. brp retired about 2 months ago. I'm within a couple of months. Planning based on that, we have weekday-heavy trips booked for DVC in the coming year. Not quite as much as you have in mind (we have too many other places to go to spend that much time at Disney), but somewhat more than weekends.
For DVC the weekday/weekend differential is fairly modest. For HGVC, our other timeshare, it's 2:1, so weekday stay have a substantial benefit there.
Cheers.

So rather than one long extended visit, you will break it up taking advantage of the Weekday discount in points?

I retired in 2009 at a relatively young age, 52, and our plan was to buy a condo near Disney and stay there for the winter. That changed when we realized that we didn't want to be away from home for that long. Enter DVC and a new plan. We have enough points to go for five to seven days, 3 or 4 trips each winter. It breaks up the cold weather for us and we still get to be home and see the kids and grandkids.

In order to maintain airline status, we need to do enough flying. So more cross-country trips to Disney are better than fewer.
Plus, Disney is something we can only do for so long before wanting to go home, or elsewhere.
Cheers.

I do understand. I am sure it is a different level, but I strive just to maintain Silver on United each year. It's not much but getting that Premium Economy upgrade when avaialble is nice.

After our last trip (first time in 1-bd) how many points it will take to be able to stay for 30 days (or sometimes she says 60) at OKW after we retire - like a winter home. Problem is that will be after 2042 and we won't be able to afford to buy the (presumably) very expensive new points they will want to sell us. Margaritaville, here I come!
(well, maybe the first couple or few years of retirement could be before the 2042. dunno)

We decided a while ago that we were not leaving MD after we retire. Our kids, family, friends, doctors are all here. And we like where we live. So, I looked into condo's in FL. But, too much hassle to rent when not being used and expensive. So, then I started looking into the points required to do 3 or 4 weeks in the January/February time frame. My plan is to alternate between 1BD's and studio's. We have slowly been buying more points to do that stay and also have enough points for other WDW trips during the year. I do love the festivals at Epcot. Good luck with your decision.

Hoping some option to extend ownership of BWV/BCV at that time but if not, will pare down our time at WDW to just the 350 points remaining.

Unfortunately likely never retiring here, ha, but a similar consideration when I moved down here.
Living in Sanford about 45-50 minutes away, there really is no "need" to hang on to my points. However, the random weekend excursions which I now do so often still maintain their "getaway" feel. Plus it's nice not to have to worry about imbibing too much and taking the bus back to the resort instead of driving home.
Of course you can never count on anything, but I will say the vast majority of my reservations take place just days prior to my mostly weekend excursions.
Thus until I find a preferred usage of the funds I can't justify selling any of my points.

We were going to snowbird before 2020 hit. Now, we live here. We had no family in Iowa and now we are closer to our kids and it’s easier for me to get to Michigan to see my step mom from FL. I retired in 2019. I’m retired and DH is not. He was going to retire at 62, which is 2 years. Now, he will probably go until 65. He has 5 weeks of vacation and gets the time off between Christmas and New Year’s. We haven’t found the right balance yet…mostly for him Pretty sure if I had a room every night, I’d probably use it. We are a tad bit further than Brian being 1 hr 20 minutes from WDW and we are older so our eyesight at night isn’t always great after a long day in the parks. Day trips for me can be very long, starting at 4 am to miss traffic (I leave at 5:30) and come home around 4-7 pm. For the first time ever, I thought about selling, but I’m back to hanging on to our points. Mostly, I don’t want to deal with the taxes, but also my kids would use our points when we don’t want to use them. And, I’m still in borrow mode so I must want to go. The first year we had our trips booked because we didn’t know we were moving. They were too long with both being a week. The second year we had short stays about every month. By December DH was not on board. The man just likes being at home. Disney really is my hobby. Also, the parks being packed didn’t work well at the end of 2022 after he was done working. Year Three. Well, I said we were going to go less and WE are, but I think I have more stays booked than for 2022 Since he doesn’t care, we’ll see how it goes. So… DCL. He loved. We are going again in May so I think that will be his vacation. We have our trips booked for Feb and Dec for the 2 of us for 2 nights each. Then we have Wed-Sun with the kids and their spouse/significant other in Sept. A one night trip for my birthday in November just because I’ve never been there on my birthday and I booked club level at AKV. One night probably too in December for CP because we’re too old to drive home. We’ll see how it goes. Good “problem” to have finding the balance. Until I’m not in borrow mode, I guess I’m not in sell mode. Our biggest problem is that we only have 1 car. We don’t need 2 except when I go to Disney. For now, he can borrow my parents IF he has to go somewhere. Most of the time he doesn’t. He can walk to the gym. Unless he runs out of food, he’s good. When we are both retired, it won’t matter really since we’ll be together. Snow birding. I would not have liked this. Not knowing what was where and worrying about the other home would not have been fun. Too much strange weather in snow country (Iowa) and hurricane country (FL) for me to be okay with snow birding.

DH’s insurance has changed 4 times since Dec 2020. If I had been on his insurance, I would have been changing docs nearly 4 times. Many he found are not in network anymore. I have mine still through my old job. Best decision I ever made. Moving records and finding quality docs has been very time consuming. I’m finally done and it’s two years later. The really interesting detail is my insurance which is BCBS no longer “works” like it did in Iowa it works like it does in Florida. Very interesting because I can’t call FL BCBS because I am not a member. I sort of hold my breath when I am waiting for insurance claims to run through my insurance now. One great thing is…I am receiving much better care here than I would have in Iowa. BCBS has a monopoly in the state, for the most part, and they deny things just because they can. There is more competition here so things are better. There are more people, more doctors so more pressure to do what is correct. One of the docs indicated that I was not receiving proper care based on current protocols.

I have myself. Not a full stay but at least a handful of weeks I can go get warm off and on. Not in a studio. I have reservations at this time and we will see if next year we decide to add on at PVB or not. We'll have a decent number if we do, but we'll see if we hang on to them or rent them or sell. Kid still enjoys going so there's that.

That was my plan for when I retired. I now have enough points for 4 weeks and I currently have 2 trips of two weeks each planned for the winter months.

The part about doctors is really huge. Between DH and myself we have to carefully insert our trips between appointments. Would love to take longer trips but he has treatments every 3 weeks and it takes a week feel well enough to do much. Getting old sucks. Our DVC gives us something to look forward to.
