Driving to Honolulu from Aulani, depending on which area of the city, looks to be 45-60 minutes.
We're thinking about a few dinners in Honolulu, possibly in Chinatown. Does anyone here have experience with parking, traffic, etc. getting into Honolulu from Aulani?
The Pig and the Lady looks really interesting.
We're also looking at Mud Hen Water, not in Chinatown.

I’ve done the drive many times. No matter what, expect that you will be stuck in heavy traffic. It isn’t always that way, but frequently is. I would give a lot of extra time. Depending on where you are going in Honolulu, parking can be easy or difficult. I’ve found many parking lots and have had good luck with street parking. Now, if you have heart set on a specific lot in the heart of Waikiki, it could be dicey. Other than that, I’ve never had to walk too far.

Interested in seeing interesting Waikiki ear dinner suggestions. We are staying at in the Waikiki area with our HGVC timeshare for two weeks in February. We will mostly be doing our own cooking (I am assuming that they have grills like HGVC locations near Kona), but will want to go out a few times.
Cheers.

Every time I go, I must have the following: 1. A malasada at Leonard's - preferably a filled one. I love haupia, so I usually get that. My wife likes her's plain. Don't eat more than one unless you want to die from a heart attack. And you absolutely need to eat it soon. If you wait, the oil/lard or whatever they use will start to congeal and make the malasada very unappealing. Trust me, though. They are delicious when eaten right away. 2. Shave ice at Waiola - perfect pillowy ice. I'm an ice cream person, so I like mine with a scoop of ice cream and coated with condensed milk. All their flavors are great, but their green tea is truly one of the best. Make sure it is the one on Mokihana St, just off Kapahulu Ave. 3. Haili's Hawaiian Foods - Just a great friendly, family run local food place. Luckily, all three of these are near each other so you can park in one place and walk to all of them. I can't help if you are looking for more upscale/fine dining. In the past, I tried many "nice" restaurants in Hawaii and found that I much preferred the dives.

I almost forgot - Marugame Udon is quite nice if you like udon. We have several in the Los Angeles area, so not as special for folks in the L.A. area.

I think some do not have grilling areas. Others may not be at all convenient.

We're not shave ice fans, but it warms my heart to see someone call it "shave ice" and not the "shaved ice" I come across so often.
Cheers.

Ok, yes I do believe they have grills. You can walk or bus over to a Foodland over in the Ala Moana shopping center. That center also has a fun Japanese Food court with lots of various Japanese food stalls.

I cringe when I hear “shaved ice.” mrs. brp went to graduate school in Hawaii, so lived on Oahu for 5 years. She knows better and cringes more than I do. Of course, she is also aware of "plate lunch."
Cheers.

I cringe when I hear “shaved ice.” Extra letters and/or redundancies. We share the same cringe. Bao bun Philly cheesesteak (it's just a "cheesesteak") Ohanas Jaleos etc...

Having lived in Philly for 4 years, I've seen things called cheesesteaks that were not Philly Cheesesteaks, so I do use the designator when not in PA. 'Shaved ice" gets more of a cringe from me than the others since many shops/carts list it that way versus just folks making a mistake. Cheers.

We’ve never gone wrong with a happy hour, with great music, at House without a Key and then going next door to Orchids at the Halekulani.

Cheers.
