With our upcoming trip this year I realized my first visit to WDW was forty years ago for my senior trip. This year I want to try and do things I’ve never done and although always wanting to I have never eaten at San Angel Inn.
I realize it’s mostly for the ambience, I love it in there. But how is the food?

It's one of our family faves! (Family includes me, DH, DD (18) and DD (14). It's one of our 14yo DD's top 2 favorite places to eat in WDW!

San Angel Inn is one of those polarizing Disney restaurants, like Le Cellier to steakhouses. Either you love it or hate it, not much middle ground. The ambiance is cool, seating is tight, Disney pricing...it has a volcano. The haters will start call it a fraud and start comparing to their local "authentic" Mexican Restaurant....blah, blah, blah.
We like it, but we rarely go....mostly because "some" ingredients don't agree with everyone in our group, plus there always seems to be a better option we want to eat.
I find the food good, I am not a Mexican food snob.....except Taco Bell, I don't do that. We have never been unhappy with our meal or service.

This is the first place I made a dining reservation, back in 1982. We made the reservation in Communicore (the old one) talking to a real person on a TV screen. Imagine that!
It's also the first place I discovered the wonderful combination of chicken and chocolate known as Mole!
We don't really go as there are so many options, as you say, but it will always have a place in my heart.
I don't much anymore, but I used to visit Taco Bell periodically. I found it pretty good for fast food from a health standpoint (compared to others). But I never considered it Mexican food, so never made the comparison.
Cheers.

I'm one of the middle ground people. The food is fine and the ambiance is very nice. I found the prices quite steep for the food received. I'd much rather go to the quick service across the walkway from the pyramid.

I'm also middle ground. Love eating there, but just for the ambiance. Food was meh last time we were there, but that was a few years ago. Probably worse now lol.
I also like Taco Bell once in a while, but I don't really do their ground beef. It's always steak or chicken items for me there.
Full disclosure -- I am at the opposite end of what one might call a "Mexican Food Connoisseur" and not very discerning, tbh.

It’s been such a long time since I’ve been there so take my comment very lightly as I’m sure things have changed over the years but my only memory of it was how much we paid for sauce. Seas and seas of sauce poured over everything on the plate. And whatever was under the sauce was not memorable enough to remember what I ordered.

We enjoy the restaurant. Food has always been good and enjoy the atmosphere as well. Agree with what other MO have said about tight seating, higher cost. Would also add that sometimes it seems so dark even with the lights on the table for some reason.

One of my friends loves tequila. She likes the bar at San Angel a lot. We've been twice over the years. One time planned, another time I was hungry and they had easy availability. The chicken fajita was good both times. Mostly I prefer the quick service on the water, especially if I can time it to get a table with a view of the fireworks.

Rereading your post, this is really about the experience and checking another box off the list.
Just go, enjoy your "newbie" San Angel experience and than come back and tell us all about it!
We try to add new experiences all the time, whether its dining, a show, a tour, or some silly WDW thing like mini-golf.

If you were a Disney newbie, I might say to enjoy the pavilion and ride but put your dining cash to better use. But it sounds like this is a bucket list-esque thing, so go for it! (And it's not like it will be any cheaper next time around!)

I hope you enjoy it! We are trying it for the first time ourselves. I struggle with Mexican food thanks to my stupid allergy but it looks fun. My guys aren't picky at all either. We're looking forward to the experience more than anything. We love trying new too!

Thanks for all the responses, and yes, I think I’m going to go for it. I think I’ll book it for lunch, even if we just order a couple of appetizers and a margarita. I’ve wanted to eat there for forty years so yes, I’ll do it, lol.

I just might have to remember this next year for Cinco de Mayo .
Funny story about Taco Bell …their commercials on the car radio … advertised as thee place for healthy food when they first opened because lettuce was health food ! I am going to guess this was early 1970s because I remember having a baby in the car . (Mine) Haha You probably don’t want to know the first time ordering a bagel . My Jewish dormitory roommates wanted to order delivery and I don’t think I had ever had anything with cream cheese on it so I agreed only if I could have butter & jelly.
There is a new Bagel Store in Celebration called Jeff’s Bagel Run and they are authentic! But priced at 2$ I love that they have a Bagel Special Flavor of the Day It is in the new Publix Celebration Point location which just celebrated their one year anniversary . Drive straight down World Drive and turn right when the road ends . It’s before the High School.
