So many of the tolls are charged by plate now even if you have the transponder. There was a time where we took the transponder out of the rental car when returning it but I forgot to change the plate information back to our personal car before we got on the plane home so we got charged for some of the tolls of the next renter of that vehicle. Again, as long as they got their money it's not their problem. You don't need to change the plate information. You just need to end the validity of the rental vehicle, and this can be done when you enter the car in the first place by putting an end time/date, and updating as necessary. I forgot once, contacted the Sunpass folks, and they reversed all of the charges when I included the doc from the rental company showing when I returned the car. Very easy. But just ending the rental is all that is necessary. I'm glad we have the Sunpass given the possibility of the delay with the Visitor Pass. That would be a killer. Probably doesn't happen often, but clearly it can.
Cheers. This feature is why I use the Sunpass Pro vs EZpass now if in my rental car. I can cut off the time of use when I pick up the car. Much easier to deal with rentals.

I believe I have a regular Sunpass transponder (I don't know that Sunpass Pro is), but I can do this as well. Maybe it's a feature of all the little brick Sunpasses, and Pro is just the latest version? Ours is several years old at this point.
Cheers.

SunPass Pro just allows you to use your SunPass at EZPass locations outside of Florida. So I can use my transponder throughout the Midwest areas that I drive and not have to worry about tolls either. It's all one system. EZ Pass really annoys me and that you cannot add a rental car easily for the toll by plate. Apparently Sunpass is slow right now because I still waiting for my replacement to ship from June 6th. They said up to 17 days to ship now.

Yep - enter the end date at the same time you enter the rental when you start. That's always worked for us as well.

I have the Uni transponder through the E-Pass system not Sunpass. Unfortunately, there's no way to enter a rental car with an end date. All you can do is edit the vehicle attached to the transponder. Then I have to switch it back to our personal vehicle at the end of the trip. Like I mentioned, I contacted the E-Pass folks but since it was my fault that I didn't change it, they wouldn't reverse the charges. It was only a few dollars but still annoying.

Being local we of course have an account but we ditched the transponder a long time ago. The charge by plate works really well, it even works if you don't have an account but the tolls cost about a dollar more. If it is easy to add plates to the account that is really the way to go. As locals you get pretty good at avoiding tolls but it is getting harder and harder, they are adding a lot of toll options even to the free paths if you really want to get there. As brp said Sunpass is really easy to work with and the few times we have had issues they have rolled back the fees.

The charge by plate works really well, it even works if you don't have an account but the tolls cost about a dollar more. With a rental, this latter doesn't work. No account and it goes via the rental company at exorbitant rates. We have the transponder and the app. Using both is redundant, but it makes sure that it won't get missed
Cheers.
