Anyone here have any recent experiences with this?
We used it once, a few years ago. I don't recall the specifics, but I had some difficulty with the return process and opted not to use it for future trips. I'm considering using it in August since we'll have a rental car for 10 days and will incur some tolls.

I use it and it is quite easy. Download the mobile app. You can then put in your travel information and payment information. When you get to MCO, there is a kiosk that you can get the tag using the QR from the app. When you get to your rental car, you need to enter the license plate number into the app and then just hang the tag on the rearview mirror. Now, you can use the EZ pass lanes without stopping. When you return the car, there are several drop boxes from the walking path from the rental car drop off to the actual airport. The drop boxes are very well labeled and not easily missed. And as I said, there are several of them.
I believe the system defaults to charging your credit card $10. If your tolls are greater than $10, then your card will be charged the difference. If your tolls are less than $10, then your card will be refunded.

I wish they had the kiosk at the Tampa airport!
I thought I read I could just have one sent in the mail to my house, actually.

We just have the regular EZ Pass unit and don't have to worry with kiosks. We just get the car, enter info in the app and go.
Cheers.

True but if you have a portable transponder might as well use it. Until the spouse leaves it behind for the first time ever...

If I had/needed an EZ Pass for “normal” life, then of course I would use it. However, EZ Pass is not used in Southern California so my only purpose of getting a transponder would be for WDW.

The Visitor Toll Pass is owned & operated by the Central FL Expressway Authority (CFX). CFX doesn't own/operate any toll roads outside of the Orlando metro area. So, highly unlikely they will put kiosks anywhere except MCO. If they do add them anywhere, it would be Sanford and I doubt that will ever happen. AFAIK, there had never been an option to have them mailed to you.

I was being tongue in cheek anyway with this - the risk of loss is true. My job is to drive. Spouse to grab the transponder. I got us to the airport lol. Anyway it's not without risks anyway. We bought ours ages ago and will replace it but sucks when it is lost. I wish they had the kiosk at the Tampa airport! I thought I read I could just have one sent in the mail to my house, actually. Are you maybe thinking about a regular SunPass Pro or EZ pass being mailed? My new one is supposed to be on its way.

In our case, we got this before the visitor pass existed, and also use it in other parts of Florida. Since we have this, I had not looked into the visitor pass and how quick it is. If we did not already have this, we might look into that. At this point, though, it would not be useful. But, yeah, if one does not have a regular pass, seems worth exploring.
Cheers.

I keep my FL toll transponder in the car at all times. I picked it up maybe 6 years ago and stopped thinking about tolls in FL at all. Major improvement for me when driving there, even when I'm only spending a couple of weeks a year in FL.
The app idea sounds good. I don't know if that was available when I was first looking back in ~2015ish timeframe.

We bought a SunPass ages ago but lately have used our EZPass. Debating whether or not to keep the SunPass as it only requires keeping $10 on it.

We have EZPass (NJ/PA have a lot of toll roads) but I'm hesitant to take it to FL because I don't want to leave it in the rental car.

We've used the Visitor Toll Pass on two separate trips. First time worked perfectly. Second time we arrived really late but got the pass and entered info into the app but they never charged us for the tolls on the way to WDW so the rental car company zinged us with their extra fees. When I inquired about it, the CFX said it can take up to 6 hours for the system to register it. As long as they get their money for the toll, they don't care where it comes from. Since then, we bought the transponder which works for most of the toll roads on the east coast of the US.
So many of the tolls are charged by plate now even if you have the transponder. There was a time where we took the transponder out of the rental car when returning it but I forgot to change the plate information back to our personal car before we got on the plane home so we got charged for some of the tolls of the next renter of that vehicle. Again, as long as they got their money it's not their problem.

Again, as long as they got their money it's not their problem. You don't need to change the plate information. You just need to end the validity of the rental vehicle, and this can be done when you enter the car in the first place by putting an end time/date, and updating as necessary. I forgot once, contacted the Sunpass folks, and they reversed all of the charges when I included the doc from the rental company showing when I returned the car. Very easy. But just ending the rental is all that is necessary.
I'm glad we have the Sunpass given the possibility of the delay with the Visitor Pass. That would be a killer. Probably doesn't happen often, but clearly it can.
Cheers.
