I watched some videos and still feel like I don't know what is going on. We have an upcoming trip planned for August. We haven't been to Disney in 8 years. I know nothing of all this Genie, Lightening Lane stuff. I am going to keep reading on it, but is there anything in particular I should avoid?

...is there anything in particular I should avoid? Yes, simply avoid Genie+. We have not yet used it and things have been fine. Cheers.

Rope drop helps. virtual queues are still a must for Tron and Guardians if you don't want to pay to ride. Tiana's is too right now, not sure when that ends and moves to Genie+ I have found manmouth club on YouTube has good info for genie+ if you want to go that route. They have one on stacking rides too. There is almost too much info out there.

Is that independent of Genie +? There are 2 things. G+ that gives you LL return times. There are also ILL (Individual lightning Lane) that are separate. Those rides are 7DMT, Tron, GotG, RotR, & FoP.

My understanding is that they're sort of related in having the same basic portal, but being specific versus more general in nature, as you note. We've not done either and not had a problem. Of course, we're also OK if we don't ride something on a particular day.
For the Tron VQ, I will say that I have never not gotten one. I only missed riding one time and that's simply because my queue time was going to run into an ADR. But there was no problem getting a Boarding Group.
If they ever offer advance Genie+, I might consider. It's not the paying I object to, but the use model.
Cheers.

We will be going at the beginning of August. I am not sure how heavy the crowds are then.
I don't understand all this virtual queue stuff. We definitely want to see the new Guardians and Tiana.

The VQ stuff is actually pretty easy in the end. And I suggest that you will want to see Tron. I personally didn't care for Guardians bacuse of too much spinning, but folks love it. Tron, though, is off the hook.
Adding yourself/your party to the VQ is in the App. You can even start looking at it now to get familiar. You choose your party from among eligible folks (and the app is very good about knowing who is eligible on any given day). Then, you just manifest OCD at exactly 7AM and just refresh a lot leading up to the time to get a Virtual Queue. If this does fail, you can try again at 1PM.
I don't recall the current rules about reservation requirements to be eligible on any given day since some folks need reservations and some don't. But others will know that part.
I have never done Genie+, as I said, but have done VQ a bunch of times and it really is straightforward.
Cheers.

Yes, they both are used through the app, but they are absolutely separate systems in that when you buy one you do not get the other. I personally have used both. I probably have tried for VQs more often and every once in awhile the app fails. I think maybe twice now the app froze or shut down or had something else weird happen where I did not get a VQ since 2021. I can usually tell when MDE is going to have a bad day based on how VQs go. This past trip the app was really horrible and extremely lagging and shutting down frequently. I did not miss a VQ, but I did a couple times opt to delete it and just buy an ILL because of schedules. This is someone who has gotten BG 1 so many times on numerous rides that I have lost count. The app has been consistently meh overall.

The weird thing about Tiana and Tron is that this will be the first time you will see two rides in one park with a VQ. That makes people wonder exactly how it is going to happen. You can try at 7:00 a.m. and you can also try at 1:00 p.m. as long as you have tapped into the park for a VQ. If there are extended hours for the deluxe resorts at MK or epcot, you can try at 6:00 p.m. on the day they will be open late as well. You can also just pay for an ILL for the ride and not worry about it at all. You can do two a day. www.undercovertourist.com/blog/virtual-queues-disney-world/The biggest issue we ran into a couple weeks ago, what's the frequency of ride breakdowns. So even if you tried for a later VQ you are not guaranteed to get in. There was more than one day when the boarding groups were just not being called. Some days it was great, and other days not. I actually am deciding if I like the VQ for Tron less because of how picky they are with return times. I don't always want to have to worry about rushing there when it is an 8:00 a.m. opening just because I got BG1

I've seen it suggested that you begin refreshing the "join virtual queue" screen about ten seconds prior to 7 AM.
To the OP--the Guardians and Tron virtual queues can "sell out" quickly, so use two phones--one to get your virtual queue and one to display the official US time (time.gov).
