Are we nuts for doing this? There's no turning back now...
Four day weekend for me; DW has to work on 7/5 so I'm going to Epcot solo in the morning. 7/4 is the only day that MK works for us. I figure by 11 it'll be really crowded and we'll head to Geyser Point for lunch, unless our Tiana return time (Lightning Lane) conflicts.

Enjoy! The fireworks should be spectacular that night! I need to find a good viewing spot not in MK. We don't want to deal with the crowds. Maybe the Poly or the TTC dock area.

Maybe the viewing platform at Contemporary? Might be crowded, but not MK level crowded. I like the view from there. Or even the walkway over to BLT, although that's a side view and gets windy for just standing to watch.
Poly might have restrictions for guests due to holiday. TTC should have some good views.
Wherever you choose to watch, hope it's an awesome experience! We did a BLT studio, theme park view, one July 4. Best Independence Day show ever from our balcony!

I'm leaning toward the Contemporary. I read that sometimes that spot is closed for private events. We can always monorail to TTC if it's closed.

Nope....Not at all.
We go to WDW often over the July 4th weekend, when the calendar works in my favor to get a long holiday weekend off. We usually got to MK on the 3rd, than over to Epcot on the 4th to watch the holiday fireworks. MK has the fireworks on the 3rd and the 4th each year.
The MK crowds are not as bad as the NYE crowds, but the heat will make it less bearable.....too many sweaty and some smelly people.
We have a Cali Grill Reservation on the 3rd, so we will have the option to go back there and watch fireworks, though that is unlikely. We will probably end up around Casey's to watch the show. But if its miserable, we might just go back to the resort and try to catch some firework views from Topolino's.
On July 4th, we will be at Epcot (as mentioned above) and might see if we can get into the VIP viewing area. Technically, its not available, but not many VIP tours take advantage of the viewing area....so there is a chance. If not, we will just grab a spot where we can. There is also the fall back position of Topolino's if its too "yuck".

Does Epcot do special/different fireworks for Fourth of July? Yes they do!
They do the normal fireworks, than add the holiday fireworks at the end.

Since you are talking about viewing areas outside of the park then you aren’t worried about missing the castle projections. I would head over to the GF and catch them there. The firework cruise boats set up in the lagoon between the GF and the wedding pavilion for the parameter shows so it must be a decent view.

I know about outside of Narcoossees, but I wouldn't want to block the view of people in the restaurant.

We watched from there and it was very nice. And no views to block.
Cheers.
