Is a Disney Theme Park Vacation Still Worth the Price?
May be behind a paywall.
Some takeaways:
The general these is about increased pricing, particularly on things that used to be free and the complication of the experience. These are common topic here.
Interesting comment about Universal facing the same issues with pricing (similar to Disney according to the article) and people making other choices:
The final point is interesting as well, and matches much of this board. People have always complained about Disney and will continue to do so no matter what happens:
Cheers.

Ha, indeed. The whining and complaining will never cease. Some accurate, to be sure. Much overblown, to be sure.
It is what it is,

Having been coerced into going to our local county fair AND our city festival this summer, I feel like the food is actually a better deal in Disney. Plus the scenery is better.

My siblings have never understood my mania with WDW. For years we did 'less expensive' vacations. OMG = SO much work. For me, a vacation shouldn't be work - the effort should be something that is wanted instead of 'making it work' efforts. I tell people all the time to only go to WDW if it is something they're interested. My SIL is a camper so, yeah, not Disney pull.

Concerts and most activities outside of Disney, a bottle of water is $5-6. Meals are about the same as at Disney. I find Disney to be a great value for what I get to experience. September when I am floating around the lazy river at TL and get hungry or hot, I will remind myself I paid more for worse food at the last concert I went to.

I think for costs it's about perceived value for some. Disney has struggled with downtime for rides that aren't weather related. There's my gripe about it all.
Food costs though? Nope my zoo is far more expensive than Disney with equivalent quick serve options. No kids meal is under $10 and the options are much less. I don't find Disney too out there in costs there.

At least when you go to the other events and pay as much, or more, the thing you went for happens. The band plays at the concert and the elephants are at the zoo. "Oh, sorry, we've had technical difficulties with the zebra" is not a common issue. These are not animatronic, after all.
Cheers.

Our past WDW trip was riddled with downtimes making it not as fun. Spending $40 for a day pass vs $150 means I have different expectations.

my zoo is far more expensive than Disney with equivalent quick serve options. I forgot about food at the zoo. We make the trip to ours about 3-4x per year and usually don't eat, but if we do, we usually end up with a chicken caesar wrap and a little bag of chips for like $14. The only place of the top of my head I get something like that at Disney is the pool bar at OKW and it would be less. It's a good thing to split, though, and we are okay supporting the zoo so I don't complain.

The be fair to Disney (not to excuse them, but to somewhat make their case), the tech used for Disney is well in advance of what other parks use. Things like RotR/MMRR/Ratatouille use software well beyond what is used for rides with tracks. They really should have this working better by now, but comparing them to other rides is maybe mushrooms to a truffles. Similar realm, but different level.
Cheers.

Doesn't excuse rides like Tron, Journey, SSE, Peoplemover, Pirates, BTM, Space Mt etc which all had longer issues in May & June. Again expectations are higher for the price tag.

One thing I value about Disney is that I can enjoy a vacation there without ever setting foot inside the parks. That's fairly amazing for a theme park vacation.
