Wife and I headed to Mexico last week for a four night stay in Cancun. SW plane was oversold by 1 person, so they were asking for volunteers to get re-booked for next day. They worked up offering flight credits from $800, $1200, $1600, $2000, and finally $2500, at which point we decided to take it. We "lost" one of our nights at the resort, equivalent to about $400, but gained $2500 in SW flight credits. Because we have the companion pass, it "feels" like $5000 to me, so a no-brainer -- we were stoked!
I asked the guy what would have happened if we hadn't volunteered -- he said they would have pulled off whoever checked in last and gave them $2500 (cash, not flight credit). I shudder to think what would happen if it was the member of a family -- so I'm doubly glad we took it and spared someone else.

Sweet! I've seen offers like this when I fly AA, right in the AA app. I've always wondered how high they'd go with the offers.

Score!! I once got a $1000 flight credit from United and almost got another $1000 about a year later, but someone else beat me to it. I'm guessing since your flight was to Cancun, pretty much everyone was going on vacation and weren't willing to trade a vacation day for flight credit. These are always best when traveling solo or with just one other person. When you travel as a family, you know you'll all have separate middle seats on the next flight.

Wow! Sounds like that was a solid decision that paid off in the long run!

Wow, wow, wow.....What a deal. Ironically, we were in Cancun last week for a destination wedding. We had a 9am flight that was only 60% booked, but I would have gladly taken that credit for a flight later that day.

What's also nice is when they need multiple people. You may get more than you agreed to. When I was coming back from a solo trip to WDW, they needed 4 people to volunteer to give up their seats and be rebooked on the next flight. I took the deal for $300. However, they needed more than just me. So I stood at the gate waiting, and I found out that whatever that last person took the deal for, we'd all get. So whereas I'd agreed to $300, I ended up getting $500 because that's how much it took to get that fourth person.

Very nice. It would probably take us a decade to use that much WN credit as we don't fly them much. But, for those who do, that's sweet.
Our best was $1500 each (so $3000 total) for a 2-hour Alaska Airlines delay right after the 739 door issues. We do fly them a lot, and 2 hours in the lounge didn't suck.
Cheers.
