Who/When/Where:
Who: Sue (65), DVC Member
SB (67), my husband
Dates: October 20 – 25, 2024
Resort: Disney’s Boardwalk Villas Resort
Experience: Very Experienced – 33rd stay at Boardwalk Villas
INTRODUCTION:
This is the annual “real” Food & Wine trip, although it’s also the first one for this year’s festival. We’ll have a very short one in November, but we’ll only have park access the day we arrive. We thought we’d be enjoying the trip with Judy (from Pete & Judy), but sadly she never got around to actually making her reservation, so we miss her once again. When Pete was alive, he handled all of this so she’s understandably a bit behind the curve, but I hope she’s ready next month to book the 2025 trip. That one will likely be shorter for us, due to other trips we have booked, and it looks like 2026 I’ll mostly miss Food & Wine due to flying to Europe in mid-October and doing a transatlantic cruise back to Florida after a few days in Amsterdam. Once I retire these time constraints won’t matter anymore!
Since it’s just going to be SB & I we’ll make the best of it, and it will be a low-key trip. He’s not one for running around, so I may end up leaving him behind on a bench or in the villa at times. We’re at Boardwalk, since that’s where Judy would have been, and I booked a 1-bedroom villa so we’re comfortable. A studio shared with him for 5 nights would be not pleasant and frankly I’m too old to even consider putting up with that!
We were actually planning to start from SW Florida rather than from home. In early October we went down there for 2 nights/3 days in order for me to get work on a dental crown started, have a minor surgery, and then finish with the annual dental exam and quarterly periodontal maintenance. This trip we planned to return to pick up the crown on Friday and stay until Sunday when we drive to WDW. This would give us a chance to spend time with Chris, Amanda & Ari, although when it’s the 2 of us we book a hotel to be more comfortable.
Then came hurricane Milton, which caused a lot of damage to FL. Thankfully my home was spared, although a section of our community pier (destroyed in Ian and recently rebuilt/reopened) was washed away. A pier is a luxury, so losing that is far better than having damage to or losing your home! Hopefully it’ll get rebuilt again. Oddly enough, in 38 years we’ve only had damage to the pier twice – 2022 and 2024. Milton resulted in some unknowns – was the lab making my crown affected? Will it be ready in time? I figured if not, I’d cancel the trip and just go to WDW from home. In the end, the crown arrived Thursday, so we were all set to head down on Friday.
So, we’ll arrive at Disney on Sunday but will not have park access until Monday, and since Big River Grill closed a while back the logical thing to do was book a reservation at Disney Springs somewhere. The question was where. At one point I was going to get the crown solo and SB would drive to meet me at Boardwalk but then that changed when I went home to start the drive and SB was all packed up & ready to go. I’d planned to head up in the morning and go to Disney Springs. grabbing lunch somewhere (Terralina, Planet Hollywood or House of Blues), sitting at the bar since I decided to not make a specific reservation in order to keep my options open. I planned to also stop by Gideon’s while there and do some shopping or browsing. That will still be the plan, but now it’ll be both of us, and since I-75 is so congested still after the storm, we’ll take the inland route up through small towns. I don’t like it, but I don’t want to deal with I-75. There’s a football game at 4:25 that SB wants to watch, so dinner for him will be the half chicken from Beach Club Marketplace and I can nibble on crackers & cheese if hungry (hence the plan to have lunch out).
Monday will be our first day of Food & Wine and our friends Tiana & Jonell plan to drive down and join us for the day. I added their names to our villa, so they’d be let into the parking lot. That evening is the second and last night of Billy Ocean, so SB & I will definitely catch a show.
Tuesday Epcot is closing at 5pm due to the Gartner Group booking the park for the evening. I’m hoping as a result the park will be less busy, but I’m not sure that will be the case. In any event, we’ll head over to enjoy Food & Wine and later we have a dinner reservation at Beaches & Cream. SB likes this place – it’s just ok for me. Everything is so high calorie, but not worth the calories in my mind. They do have tomato bisque on the menu, and I like that, so I can order that while he enjoys something else. It is well themed, and I’m sure we’ll enjoy it – it’s just not something that’s near the top of my list.
Wednesday is more Food & Wine, some pool time, and that’s about it. Thursday is our final Food & Wine time, more pool time, and then we have the DVC Moonlight Magic event at Animal Kingdom for the evening. Holli & I did this some previous year, and it was pretty nice. We like Flight of Passage in Animal Kingdom, and the safari, so hopefully we’ll get to do both of those. SB did NOT like Expedition Everest (thought he was going to die), but maybe I’ll ride solo.
Friday, we head home, but the breakfast at Trattoria (at Boardwalk) is really great so I booked that for this morning. I figured we weren’t likely to sit around waiting for Food & Wine to open up this day, so might as well have a nice breakfast and get on the road. Saturday, I have a work event 3.5 hours away, making for a long day, so getting home by noon on Friday will let me get some “weekend” stuff done in advance of the work trip.
The plans so far are:
Sunday 10/20: Drive to WDW, Disney Springs, Resort
Monday 10/21: Food & Wine, Billy Ocean
Tuesday 10/22: Food & Wine, Pool, Beaches & Cream
Wednesday 10/23: Food & Wine, Pool, Food & Wine
Thursday 10/24: Food & Wine, Pool, Moonlight Magic at Animal Kingdom
Friday 10/25: Trattoria breakfast, Drive to Gainesville

DAY 1 – Sunday 10/20/24 Who: Sue (65), DVC Member SB (67), my husband Plan: Drive to WDW, Disney Springs, Resort
Actual: We woke in our Ft Myers hotel room and after lounging around a bit, having breakfast in the room and packing up the car were on the road before 8:45. I was surprised the Waze app said the best route was I-75 to I-4. I decided to trust it and the ride was very easy until the last part. While on I-4 it notified us that traffic was stopped (near where highway 27 connects). We would have encountered this regardless of which route we took, so no regrets. The app offered an alternative route to avoid a few miles of the backup, which we took. Rejoining I-4 further up I decided to get off at the first Disney exit and travel the internal roads the rest of the way, arriving at Disney Springs just after noon.
As we approached the Orange Garage it started to rain – what’s up with that??? It was light but steady and coming down somewhat sideways. The weather app said it would end at 1:30. We walked over to Gideon’s first and I saw they were using the virtual queue. I went up and signed up for it, being given an estimated call-back time of 2 hours from now. We then walked over to Planet Hollywood which was mobbed.
We waited for our turn at the hostess stand and said we wanted to just sit at the bar. She didn’t think there would be any seats, considering how busy it was, and the wait for a table would be 15-20 minutes. We decided to try our luck and once upstairs we could see the bar was packed with people! We lucked into the only 2 empty seats, which were partially hidden by a pole. Score! We were right in front of a tv playing some football, so that was good for SB.
We ordered drinks – beer for him, wine for me. For food we stuck with a couple of appetizers, which was more than enough food. He had the buffalo chicken wings, and I got the chicken crunch. He ate all the wings, and a piece of my chicken crunch. I ate the other 3 pieces, and we were both stuffed! We ordered another round of drinks since we had time to kill before the Gideon’s text was expected.
Soon we got the text, so we quickly asked for the check and got that settled. There was a brief delay to get the passholder discount on the food applied. Coming back outside the sun was shining – and of course my sunglasses were in the car, lol. We walked over to Gideon’s and the return line was almost back to the end of the street. However, it moved quickly. We ended up buying 4 cookies – banana bread chocolate chip & triple chocolate for me and banana bread chocolate chip and Frankenstein for him. With that done we returned to the car and drove over to Boardwalk.
It was odd that I hadn’t gotten a single text or notification about our room, so I was really hoping the system had simply failed and the room was ready. Unfortunately, that was not the case – it wasn’t ready. It was around 2:45 at this point. A cast member made a key for SB since he’d forgotten to pack his magic bands and then contacted housekeeping to let them know we were here waiting (supposedly the room was almost done – only 1 thing needed to be finished for it to be ready). We waited and waited. I was concerned about SB grumbling – not because he was wrong, but because I don’t want to hear it. We’re on vacation, in a beautiful place, don’t spoil it with complaining about something I can’t control!
When almost an hour had passed, I went back up to the front desk and asked them to call again – this was getting ridiculous. Shortly after that I got the notification with our room number. We’re on the 4th floor, fairly close to the elevators, so my requests were met. We brought our stuff to the room and got settled – I did the unpacking and SB stayed out of the way, lol.
We hung out in the villa for a while – he was watching football and I started to work on the trip report. I was not hungry at all, so I asked him if he was still wanting his chicken dinner tonight. He was full too, so no to that. I looked at the options at Boardwalk Deli/Bakery, Beach Club Marketplace and the Market at Ale & Compass and he suggested we walk over to Beach Club to get him a chili cheese dog. That worked for me since it was beautiful outside, and I wanted to get a little walking in.
We stopped to look at the menu at the new Cake Bake Shop restaurant that’s opening soon, and the prices are ridiculous. A cup of tea is $8. A soda is $8. A hot chocolate is $11 or $13. A simple croissant is $12. Cake slices are huge (probably similar to Gideon’s) and start at $22 and go up from there. I told SB I’ll go to my grave never having eaten here – it just beyond ridiculous! Let’s not forget the kid’s menu buttered noodles for $18. Wow.
We continued to Beach Club and once inside SB ordered his foot long chili cheese dog. I browsed through the shop while we waited, and then we walked back to Boardwalk. He went up to the villa while I continued walking a bit more, wanting to at least get up to 10,000 steps. The Gartner Group is doing their annual convention and must be staying at and having meetings/events in all the resorts in this area. They have loads of golf carts sponsored by T-Mobil transporting convention attendees from one place to another if they don’t want to walk. They’ve also rented out Epcot for a private event Tuesday night – sure would be nice to attend a convention like that!
Once I had my steps in I returned to the villa. SB had eaten half of his chili dog and put the other half in the fridge for later. I sat at the dining table to get today’s report done, and then will head into the bedroom to watch my stuff on the tv in there. It’s already 6:45 and sad to say I think we’re both pretty pooped out!
Today for the most part was a very good day. I did not like the awful traffic, the rain, or the waiting for the room. Boardwalk is notorious for rooms not being ready until close to 4pm – and sometimes after! Despite that, the villa is beautiful and in a very convenient location. I don’t think we’ll see fireworks since there are big trees in front of the balconies in this section of the resort. The timing of Gideons and Planet Hollywood worked well, and we were lucky to find those seats. The food was good as well.
Tomorrow our friends Tiana & Jonell are driving down from Ocala and will spend some Food & Wine time at Epcot with us. SB & I are looking forward to seeing Billy Ocean’s concert tomorrow night. That’s a great way to kick off this trip – our first visit to Food & Wine Festival 2024!

DAY 2 – Monday 10/21/24 Who: Sue (65), DVC Member SB (67), my husband Tiana & Jonell, friends Plan: Food & Wine, Billy Ocean
Actual: Last night when the fireworks started, I stepped onto the balcony but could only see the higher ones through lots of tree branches. In other words, no real view. We each ate a small piece of our cookies, which were delicious. We slept well and I got up before 4:30. With friends coming around 8 it was going to be an earlier day than normal.
I made my cappuccino and took it back to bed. SB didn’t get up until almost 7. I made my usual egg and slice of bacon for my breakfast, but he didn’t want anything to eat. Hopefully he won’t regret that when we’re at Epcot waiting for Food & Wine to open. Since we’ve been on the road for a few days already I threw a small load of laundry into the washing machine.
SB was ready to head downstairs by 8 so I threw the clothes in the dryer, and we went out to the boardwalk. Despite not wanting any breakfast, now he wanted a “little something” to put on his stomach. Never mind that we have 2 pairs of hard-boiled eggs, 10 uncooked eggs, half a chili cheese dog, crackers/cheese, cookies, and some leftover ribs in the villa refrigerator, lol! We went to Boardwalk Deli (formerly known as Boardwalk Bakery) and he liked the photo of the breakfast sandwich but when he saw it was on a bagel didn’t want it. He got the kid’s ham & cheese sandwich, which came with a couple strawberries and a small bottle of water.
We called Tiana and they had been delayed by traffic and would not be here in time to enter Epcot at 8:30 (sigh). Their ETA was now 8:43 and that’s pretty much when they got here. SB ate his little sandwich at a table by Crescent Lake and then we went upstairs and waited for the others outside the lobby doors.
Once they arrived, we went back downstairs to the boardwalk, and I saw the boat to Epcot pulling away from the dock. No big deal – it was comfortable for walking. One benefit to being late is there’s no line of people waiting to be let in – they’re already in the park (this is also a negative, lol). Going through security I mentioned to Tiana to take anything with a magnetic clasp out of her fanny pack before going through the metal detectors. The other 3 of us sailed on through – she got snagged and sent over for wanding and a manual bag check. Not sure what it was that set it off.
Next was the entry point – the other 3 of us breezed on through but Tiana got stopped. After much discussion she had to go to Guest Services to get the problem straightened out – something to do with the monthly payment (she & Jonell pay for their passes monthly, direct debit from a bank account). That took a while, so it was well past 9 before we actually set foot in the park. Had this been my only chance for Food & Wine I would have been really annoyed by this point!
Finally, we headed up the hill and walked into what was Future World to do Soarin’. The app had a 10-minute standby wait but the queue was filled in more than halfway back to the entrance. It was probably more like 15-20 minutes and was posted at 50 minutes by the time we came back out. We ended up with the top row, center section, so that was nice. As we were walking to Soarin Tiana was saying they/she needed to get something to eat since they hadn’t eaten breakfast before leaving or in the car.
After Soarin we sat at Sunshine Seasons while she ate a croissant. By now Living with the Land boat ride was a good 20-minute wait so we skipped that. Instead, we took a quick walk through a very crowded Moana’s Water Adventure thing (Tiana & Jonell had never seen it) and by then it was 10:30. We walked out to World Showcase, and I got a table in the cantina at Mexico while they each got a margarita.
SB was interested in the Noodle Exchange, which was visible from our table. They didn’t open up early so just after 11 we walked over there. He got the noodles with shaved beef, which he had last year and enjoyed again this time. Tiana got the rice noodles with shrimp and was surprised to see noodles, lol! I pointed out that it’s the Noodle place, so everything has noodles. She seemed to like them, and the shrimp were a really good size – surprisingly big. We stood at a table by the like while the noodle eaters ate most of their bowls (ate the rest as we walked).
As we approached Mexico, they noticed the margarita stand’s line had pretty much disappeared, so I waited at the exit while they each got another margarita. The ones here are definitely stronger than the ones in the cantina, and there are more choices. Just past China is the India booth, where I got the chicken tikka masala and a glass of the Sula sparkling wine (rose brut). Tiana had never heard of this dish but usually likes what I like so she tried it and did like it. Most of it I shared with SB. It was nice and spicy, but they were kind of skimpy with the chicken. It was mostly rice and the sauce. I still liked it though.
We continued walking around the countries but mostly looking at the menu’s vs ordering. In America everyone was disappointed that the food offerings for the festival are various hot dogs. Yes, they’re American but how boring! In the past this booth always had great stuff. SB wanted a funnel cake, which I never let him get (diabetes) but the others were willing to help eat it so I caved to the peer pressure, lol! All four of us enjoyed it, but it’s one of those things that shouldn’t be done too often!
Our final stop was in France where Jonell & I joined the queue (always long) while SB & Tiana waited on a bench. I got the beef bourguignon for SB (Jonelle got one too) and the moelleux (egg, caramelized onions & goat cheese) for me. Tiana & SB also tried my moelleux and all three of us liked it. It reminded me of a quiche but a little softer. The guys really enjoyed their beef.
Jonell had been thinking about fish & chips from UK but after the margaritas, funnel cake & beef he wasn’t hungry enough. It was getting pretty warm by now, everyone was full, so they decided to head home. The park was quite busy today – surprisingly busy for a Monday! That was somewhat disappointing, although for the most part we didn’t have to wait long at the F&W kiosks. We’ll see how it is later!
We left the park and saw the boat pulling away from the dock. Tiana wanted to wait for the next one, I wanted to walk, and the guys voted for boat. We sat on a sunny bench and waited, and waited, and waited some more. Finally, I think it was SB that said “let’s just walk” – there was no sign of a boat coming. Tiana protested but was overruled this time (majority rules), lol! We were coming down the hill on the boardwalk side before we saw the boat headed to the Epcot dock.
We said our goodbyes, but they’ll be coming back Thursday to do the DVC member Moonlight Magic event with us. I said I wanted them here by 4 but Tiana is going to work until noon and then they’ll come down then & hang out at the resort. That works – they won’t be late!
SB & I went up to the villa, where he laid down to watch tv and I changed into a swimsuit and went to the quiet pool. I stayed down there for an hour, coming back upstairs around 2:15 to watch the rest of General Hospital and cool down. The a/c felt great, and I relaxed with a glass of wine while working on the report & catching up on some online stuff.
SB got up and finished off his chili cheese dog and my leftover ribs from Ft Myers. He said the chili cheese dog was almost better reheated when a day old, lol! Around 4:15 we walked back over to Epcot, which was even busier than before. I’ve never seen it so crowded on a Monday. By now the lines at the food booths were longer, but still not horrific like on a Saturday. It was almost a disconnect seeing the relatively short lines vs the huge mob walking around World Showcase.
We went straight to America and the line waiting to be let in for the 5:30 concert was huge. Sometimes the theater is open, with just the dining package section roped off, but not today. I joined the standby queue on the Italy side, which snaked around 3 times in that courtyard. SB went to the regular stand to get a beer and popcorn, then came down and waited for me to reach where he was standing outside of the queue. They let us start entering the theater just before 5 and we found fairly decent seats on the side by Italy. Really what matters most is simply having a place to sit and hear him – his isn’t a visually exciting show.
The theater was standing room only by 5:30 and it was a nice crowd (nobody standing up, blocking other people). He performed some of his most popular songs and did a really good job. It was rough getting out of there afterwards, as all the people made World Showcase even more congested – for several countries! We kept walking and at Australia SB got the shrimp on a skewer. This had 5-6 shrimp and looked like a pretty decent serving. He said it was a bit salty, but he enjoyed it.
I went to browse in one of the shops, but it was just too crowded to be enjoyable. I collected SB from a bench outside and we continued to Canada. I joined the queue while he secured our trash can table. He wanted the filet mignon, and I got the cheese soup with pretzel roll. I ended up hacking at the filet with a fork, trying to get a bite, and sent him to get a knife. Just then a real table opened up, so I moved over. With the plastic knife it was easy to cut the filet – I apologize for the crappy picture I posted, as I didn’t remember to take it before messing it up trying to cut it with a plastic fork! It was delicious, and we also really liked the potatoes that came with it. The soup was great, as usual.
As we approached International Gateway SB decided to head back to the resort I stayed to take another loop around the countries – not to eat anything, but just to enjoy the beautiful weather! As a solo it’s easier maneuvering through the crowds. Billy Ocean was performing his second show as I passed through America, but I didn’t linger since the song was one he did in our show.
It was a pretty night, and I took a few pictures as the sun had set. When I came past Mexico, I could see Spaceship Earth doing the initial lights, but I didn’t stay for full darkness. Back at International Gateway I exited the park and walked back to the resort. We’re both nibbling on pieces of our cookies and are in for the night. He’s watching football in the living room and I’m watching my stuff in the bedroom. No doubt I’ll be asleep first!
Today was a nice day, although not without the morning frustrations (being late, trouble entering the park). Once that was behind us we all had a really nice time. Tomorrow we’re going to switch it up a bit and go to the pool for the morning. We throw on some clothes and hit Food & Wine for a quick lunch – I want to try the beef short ribs over between Imagination & the Land, then relax at the resort for the afternoon (including showering). Epcot is closing early for a private Gartner Group event, so we’ll have dinner at Beaches & Cream rather than Food & Wine.

Enjoy yourselves, I always look forward to your TR’s. We just came back. I do recommend and was hesitant because it was seafood. But Coastal Eats, they list it as by mission Space. I say around the corner from the closed test track🤷♀️.they have a roasted warm water lobster tail with garlic butter. It was tender, fresh and I think one of the better F&W deals. They have a shrimp cocktail with jumbo shrimp that we should have also gotten. In the same area the Flavors of the Fire had a very good steakhouse blended burger slider. We were ending our eating, so we split it but felt it was another win. It’s also the only real beef they had everything else is plant base, which I don’t do.
HW, it’s not about the food, I know everyone talks about the pork slider. It’s because they had a sparkling pineapple wine. I had that at a booth a few years back at the arts festival. I don’t like sweet, I’m a red wine drinker and do like Prosecco. So it’s sparkling, and I like pineapple, took a chance. It is not sweet and has the lightest after taste of pineapple. It is from a FL winery and lucky you if you like it, you can order. I tried and the state I live in they told me does not allow online alcohol shipments, tried state where my children reside. Same thing.

I always enjoy your reports so much, especially for Food & Wine! Staying at an EPCOT resort is definitely the way to go - nothing beats that quick walk to the International Gateway! Hope you have fun today!

Sounds like a great trip! We also enjoyed the filet and pretzel with cheese soup... we mixed them, and that made them even better. You got to try Australia which is cool... when we were there Australia was closed and I hear they were relocating it to the Land pavilion but we never got over there to try it. Is it back to its normal spot?

I will give the sparkling wine a try. I hadn't noticed that, and would have assumed it would be too sweet also. Glad to know it isn't!

DAY 4 – Wednesday 10/23/24 Who: Sue (65), DVC Member SB (67), my husband Plan: Food & Wine, Pool, Food & Wine
Actual: Last night it was silent, which is the way I like it. We both slept well again. He was up by 5 and I followed around 5:15. We followed the usual morning routine (cappuccino, online stuff, local news) until just before 7:30 when SB suggested going out for breakfast. That’s not my thing, but I know he wants to, so what the heck. He jumped in the shower, and I got dressed (will shower later again, after the pool) and we headed over to Beach Club Marketplace around 7:45.
Turns out SB was wanting a big sit-down breakfast, which was the exact opposite of what I wanted. I would have preferred just cooking a small breakfast in the villa since we have lots of eggs that are going to end up traveling back home with us. Plus, we have Trattoria the day after tomorrow for breakfast (getaway day). So, we argued most of the way to breakfast at Beach Club Marketplace, which sadly is not unusual. He throws out statements that are either not true or make no sense and then won’t listen to any reason. It’s frustrating, and this is why solo trips are so nice! My priority for this trip is Food & Wine Festival – we have 4 days we can get into Epcot, and that’s why I’m here. We did Beaches & Cream for him last night. He likes Food & Wine too. If I went to a big breakfast, I wouldn’t be able to eat again until tonight rather than having a small lunch and dinner.
At Beach Club Marketplace he got a bottle of chocolate milk, and we ordered the Bounty Platter (big breakfast) for him and the kid’s egg sandwich for me. The kid’s meal comes with a small bottle of water, small container of yogurt & some grapes. We took it outside to eat and it was all good. His bounty platter now comes with 2 Mickey waffles rather than one plus a biscuit. I ate one of the waffles and more than half of the egg sandwich.
Once finished we walked back to Boardwalk and went up to the villa. He decided that since he’d showered, he would skip the pool (surprise, surprise <g>). It’s a total coincidence that something to watch would be on ESPN <g>. Usually on trips he’ll come to the pool the first time, then skip it, possibly returning for the last day. It doesn’t bother me – I’m fine going down there by myself.
I updated the report and read a few online things before getting changed and going down to the pool around 9. It was another nice quiet morning and once again I pulled a chaise lounge over to the sun. Once another half-hour had passed the sun was hitting a bigger area. Only 2 other couples were out there. I again alternated between the chaise lounge and the side of the pool. It got warm pretty quickly, to the point where I pulled my chaise lounge to where part of me would be in the shade but just the back of my legs would get some sun. When the sun shifted, I decided it was time to head back upstairs (around 11:30).
SB was laying on the murphy bed watching Stephen A Smith and some other guy screaming at each other (sports talk). Yikes. I immediately noticed it was warm in the villa and found the thermostat not working at all. He said he hadn’t touched it. That could be true. I called engineering to report the problem. I noticed the Gideon’s box had been moved so I peeked inside and noticed he’d eaten big chunks of both of my cookies! When questioned he said he didn’t know which were his and which were mine! Omigod. I guess I know which cookies I’ll be eating next time, lol!
I changed into clothes and a lady from engineering knocked on the door. When she saw the problem, she had to send a picture of the thermostat to co-workers (electricians). She said they would have to fix it. She left and at most it was 3 minutes before 2 engineering guys with tools were knocking on the door! They removed the panel on the wall and fiddled around with stuff in there. They removed some of the parts, cleaned them & replaced them, etc – it was quite the production. But, it’s working again now!
In terms of Food & Wine for lunch today – no surprise I am not hungry after eating breakfast, so I basically ruined it for myself by ordering that kid’s egg sandwich. I should have stuck with just his waffle. He was willing to go over but admitted he wasn’t really hungry either – big breakfast, trail mix, MY COOKIES, etc – no wonder. We agreed we’d go over after General Hospital. He wants to try new stuff this time, but I don’t know that he has anything specific in mind. I plan to try the sparkling pineapple wine at Hawaii (although it's from a Florida winery) based on the recommendation of another member, but I’m not sure what my food item will be.
It's a beautiful day today, but definitely on the warm side when in the sun. In the shade it’s wonderful! I decided to put our pool noodles out in the car, then came back in and did some online stuff and a little work stuff until it was time to head out.
We left around 3 and since the boat was pulling in we rode it over to International Gateway. It’s a pleasant ride when you have the outside seats in the back (we did), but the inside is nothing special – I’d rather walk in that case. The park was not busy at all so we breezed right through security and the entry.
This visit turned out to be somewhat of a feeding frenzy on SB’s part. His plan was to go around twice but he made it once. He wanted to do a loop, then head into the former Future World to do the Flavors from Fire booth, then return for another loop around the countries. Our first stop was at the Noodle Exchange, where he got the Thai shrimp with rice noodles bowl. The shrimp are really large, and he enjoyed this but said the beef one is better. He ate as we walked and since there was nobody in line at the margarita booth I got him a strawberry margarita. These are definitely better than the ones across the way in the cantina!
We hadn’t spent any time in Germany yet and I wanted to see what the bratwurst looked like this year, so we stopped there next. I got the bratwurst on a pretzel roll and broke it half, so we shared it. He likes mustard on his and I don’t, so I took the “clean” half and gave him the other. It was pretty good!
Next was Spain, where he decided to try the paella Negra with squid ink rice, shrimp, bay scallops and octopus. He ended up loving this! I was proud of him for trying something so adventurous, but I figured he would like it since he likes oysters and other seafood! This was his first time trying octopus.
As we came back around, we stopped in Hawaii and I got a glass of the Fl Orange Groves Winery sparkling pineapple wine. I was shocked it was $10 but figured what the hell. I liked it ok (SB liked it more) – probably wouldn’t buy it unless we would be sharing the bottle, but I appreciate the recommendation and am glad I tried it.
We walked into the other half of Epcot and went to the Flavors from Fire booth. SB got the steakburger while I grabbed a table across the way at Coastal Eats. The steakburger would be the perfect thing for me except it’s a mixture of ground beef & mushrooms – I don’t want mushrooms. He enjoyed it, though. I’d told him the warm water lobster tail and jumbo shrimp were highly recommended, so he went to Coastal Eats and came back with both of them.
The three shrimp (for $13) were huge! Each one was easily 3 bites by him. He said they were excellent, too. While we were there, I saw Coastal Eats had an Australian Wildly brut cuvee sparkling wine. The lobster tail was next, and he really enjoyed that! They’ve had a lobster tail at the festival for years, but he's never been interested. I don’t know if this one is the same as in the past, but if so, he’s lucky he finally tried it!
I gave the rest of the pineapple wine to him and got a glass of this – it was much more my style, and only $7. I enjoyed sipping that while he ate. The booth had a sign advertising a crab claw cocktail (4 stone crab claws with some sauce) for $12 so I got that for him as well. He loved them! When we were out with Chris & his family in Ft Myers Beach last Saturday SB thought about ordering the stone crabs but ended up changing his mind so this was perfect.
He was pretty well stuffed by now, and we’d spent a small fortune, lol. We browsed through Creations looking for birthday gifts for me but came up with nothing. I liked the purple festival spirit jersey, but I don’t need any more of those – they’re just too big, too long, and look stupid hanging below a jacket. If they’d had them in kids sizes I would have tried an XL but this one only came in adult sizes.
We walked through Communicore and he sat at a table while I checked the merchandise there and then got the traditional mac & cheese from the Macitizers booth. It was good but cooled off very quickly. Now we were both full, and he no longer wanted to make a second loop around the countries. He waited while I got another glass of the cuvee brut from Coastal Eats, then headed back to the resort.
I walked out to the countries but then decided to check the app. Spaceship Earth only had a 5-minute wait, so I decided to go do that. I checked out the gift shops on either side as I finished the brut, then pretty much walked right into my ride vehicle. This attraction is a classic, but it seems I hardly ever do it – mainly because coming in from International Gateway it’s far enough away that SB doesn’t want to “walk that far”. This worked out perfectly.
I headed back to World Showcase and went into Mexico to do the boat ride. The boat ahead of me had a lady & her baby. My boat was only me and the boat behind me was completely empty – it was great! After the ride I browsed the merchandise on display, but nothing really caught my eye. Back outside I continued walking around enjoying the beautiful afternoon/evening. It was definitely busier now, and the festival booths had some lines, so I’m glad we did what we did when we did it!
I didn’t bother with Norway or China but did look through the shops in Germany and Italy. There was a beautiful Spaceship Earth model in Germany but I hadn’t taken SB’s credit card before he left and wasn’t sure he wanted to spend $79,000 for my birthday gift! I skipped America but browsed briefly in Japan before bailing out. The big store was just too congested for my liking. In Morocco I walked back to see the sangria sips area, then continued to the shops in France. Sometimes they have stuff I like in the shop outside the pastry shop but not today. I did spritz some perfume in one of the shops, but that’s about it.
When I came to International Gateway, I left the park and walked back to Boardwalk. Quite a few people were outside enjoying the evening – it’s such a great place to be. I’m so thankful I discovered DVC back in 1995 and was able to become a member in 1997.
Back in the villa SB was watching tv, waiting for a basketball game to start. He raved again about how fantastic the food was tonight. He swears this is the best F&W festival ever, which is funny because before the trip all I saw online were complaints about how disappointing this year’s festival was. I sure don’t see it, but we all look at things differently. SB wanted some of “his” cookies, so I broke off pieces from his cookies and gave them to him along with some sugar-free lemonade. Later I broke off smaller pieces of his cookies for me – fair is fair!
I did another small load of laundry, our last for this fairly short trip. I went to the bedroom to update the report and watch something other than basketball. He was practically asleep by 8:15 so we’ll see how much basketball he actually remembers tomorrow!
Today was another great day! It was a bit rocky this morning with arguing on the way to breakfast, but it was fine after that. In a way I guess it was better we only did Food & Wine once, because I don’t think he could have kept that pace twice in a day. But then again – maybe he could!
Tomorrow will be our last full day. I’ve already told him I’m having breakfast here in the villa! He’s planning to join me at the pool, then we’ll make one last round at Food & Wine before General Hospital. After GH we’ll need to shower & be ready for the DVC Moonlight Magic event at Animal Kingdom!

DAY 5 – Thursday 10/24/24 Who: Sue (65), DVC Member SB (67), my husband Plan: Food & Wine, Pool, Moonlight Magic at Animal Kingdom
Actual: We slept well again and this morning I didn’t get up until after 5:30 (despite being awake shortly after 5). SB had been up earlier but fell back asleep and was up again around 6:30. I had my cappuccino and went out to the main part of the villa to make breakfast a little after 8. SB actually asked if I “had to” go to the pool today. After altering what I wanted to do yesterday to do the breakfast thing, I wasn’t doing that again today (our last full day here).
For breakfast he had a pair of hard-boiled eggs, bacon and toast. I cooked an egg, slice of bacon and single piece of toast for myself. We were in swimsuits and headed down to the quiet pool by 9. We were the only ones there for the first half hour. Somebody staying in this area felt it was ok to let their kid be out on the balcony screaming animal noises at the top of his lungs. We were happy to not be staying near these idiots. We commented that had either of us behaved like that as kids, we would have gotten yelled at & most likely slapped for acting like a brat. While I don’t condone violence, parents do need to shut their kids up when they’re in public places and teach them how to behave appropriately.
SB stayed in the pool with a noodle while I once again alternated between my chaise lounge and the edge of the pool. I figured at 10 Stephen A Smith would be calling to SB and sure enough at 10 SB decided to return to the villa <g>. After he’d left a lady arrived at the pool and asked if I was me, saying she reads my reports and had just run into SB in the hallway. She said they scared each other, and he confirmed her story, lol!
I stayed out on my chaise lounge until around 11:15 then moved to the shady table for a bit before heading upstairs. I got changed and we walked over to Epcot. The park wasn’t busy, but it felt really hot to me. SB thought it was fine so I think I just hadn’t had the chance to cool down after being at the pool.
We stopped in China where SB got the Shanghai scallion noodles with shrimp and the orange mango cocktail w/tequila & vodka. I waited for him in the shade next to the tea booth. He really liked the cocktail, but I don’t care for mango and didn’t like it at all. He enjoyed the food as well, and I had a few bites of noodles.
We continued walking and he waited at a partly shady table while I got the chicken tikka masala in India. We both like this and it’s too much for me to eat alone so he helped with it. From there we continued walking around. I mentioned the Spaceship Earth thing was in a shop in Germany in case he meant to buy it today. He said something about that would be my birthday gift for the next 79 years, so I passed.
In America I got a shady picnic table while he went to get the chocolate cake for me and something for him. He came back with the Carolina style hot dog, the Goose Island Beer Co hazy beer hug hazy IPA and TWO of the chocolate cakes (on one plate)! He loved the hot dog again, and even I had to admit it looked great. He also liked the beer. The chocolate cakes were fabulous, but one would have been plenty. We were so stuffed when we finished there! The chocolate is so rich I chugged down all my water and still wanted more.
SB asked if I was going around again but I didn’t want to – I was finally not feeling hot (temperature) and since I was too full to eat anything there was really no point in making another round. I did want to try the Piper-Sonoma brut from Forest & Field, so SB exited at the International Gateway, and I continued to that booth. I wasn’t crazy about this one – the one from Coastal Eats yesterday was definitely better. I sat on a shady bench in Canada while I drank it then left the park & rode the boat back to Boardwalk.
I packed up the clean clothes and then at 2pm worked on the report while watching General Hospital. By 4 we were headed to the bus stop to catch the bus to Animal Kingdom to check in for tonight’s Moonlight Magic. The park closes at 6, Moonlight Magic is 7-10 but we can get into the park at 4. Since we’re AP holders we could get in at 2 but had no reason to do so.
I texted Melissa (a fellow dvc member) to let her know and she replied that she & her party had just arrived at AK. She has 2 more people than she was able to include on her Moonlight Magic ticket, so I agreed to get them in under mine. Once we got off the bus, we easily found them – they stayed in a very obvious location to make it easier. We all made our way through security and then over to the entry. Once there people without the Moonlight Magic were sent to the left and we were sent to the right. We were given a brochure with information on the event.
We made Melissa’s 2 adult daughters part of our party and were let into the park, given wristbands and each person was given three snack coupons. We parted ways here and SB & I headed back to Harambe to do Kilimanjaro Safari. The posted standby time was 10 or 15 minutes but in reality, we walked directly into the loading area. We had to wait for one truck to load before us, but that’s it! It was a pretty good safari, but part of the route must be under refurbishment because we skipped most of the elephant habitat (and only saw 1 big elephant off in the distance), and the mandrill monkeys. On the savanna there was a giraffe just standing on the road for a while, holding up traffic, but eventually he moved on his own. The cheetahs were up pacing back and forth being very visible. The female lion was out but no sign of the male. I only had my cell phone, so the pictures weren’t great.
I checked the app after the safari and Flight of Passage was posted as 40 minutes. We walked over there and found a 50-minute wait now. We joined the queue and were in the loading area within 30 minutes, so not bad! It was fun as usual – this is a great attraction! By the time we got off it was 6pm and the park was closed. We went next door to the Na’vi boat ride and joined that queue. Our wrist bands gave us access, otherwise we would have been turned away. We had about a 10-minute wait here. SB had never done this before.
Next, we headed towards Dinoland but stopped at Flame Tree BBQ to use a couple snack coupons for a diet coke and side of mac & cheese. Just before ordering SB decided to get the half chicken dinner here rather than going to Beach Club Marketplace later. We had to pay for that. The piece of chicken looked really small, and he said something about that. They offered to bring him another one, and that one was much bigger. We found a table and enjoyed dinner – I helped with some of the white meat, but we still ended up not finishing everything.
Now we headed into Dinoland and walked right into the preshow at Dinosaur. This will be closing for good soon so they can turn it into an Indiana Jones attraction. Next, we rode Triceratops Spin, again with no wait. This is a kiddie ride, but I didn’t mind doing it since I didn’t have to wait for it! On the way out of the area we used a snack coupon to get SB a soft swirl ice cream in a waffle cone, which he ate while we walked over to Asia. Along the way we passed a row of cast members giving out free Mickey bars, strawberry bars, Mickey ice cream sandwiches, etc. SB still had his ice cream but went over and got an ice cream sandwich & gave it to me. I don’t really care for these, so we swapped, and I ate his cone for a while until we got to Expedition Everest.
He won’t ride this – did it once and swore he was going to die! I gave him back the waffle cone and left him on a wall while I walked directly onto the ride. This is great having no crowds! It was a fun ride, but intense in parts. When I got back outside SB was surprised I was back so quickly. I told him I walked right on and he said some guy had said the same thing and rode it three times, lol.
At this point we’d ridden all the attractions we were interested in and only had the spending of the remaining three snack credits left to do. We walked to Africa and used two of them for cinnamon pecans and cinnamon almonds – those are delicious! We then walked up to Discovery Island, and I left SB on a wall while I went back near Dinoland to get a Mickey soft pretzel with cheese sauce. I don’t use the cheese sauce but maybe Amanda will want it (it’s in a sealed container). I nibbled on a little of the pretzel as I walked back to SB but most of it is in a ziploc bag going home with us.
Once we exited the park there were two rows of cast members. They handed us each a tote bag that said Membership Magic DVC on one side and Happy Halloween on the other side. They invited us to trick or treat, and they were putting handfuls of candy into our bags – it was crazy! Most of it was good stuff, too. I’ll take a bunch of that into the office, and the non-chocolate I’ll bring to an outdoor work event Saturday.
We went to the bus stops and waited about 10 minutes or so for our bus. After stopping at Yacht Club & Beach Club, we arrived at Boardwalk. We probably should have just gotten off at Yach Club and taken the boat over to Boardwalk!
Today was a really great day! Loved pool time, enjoyed Food & Wine, and the Moonlight Magic event was better than last time in so many ways! The weather was perfect, the crowds were very small, and even at the snacks and Flame Tree there wasn’t much of a line. We did see lines of people at the various character greets, but since we don’t care about those it didn’t impact us.
Tomorrow we’ll have a nice breakfast before hitting the road for home.
