Who: Sue (66), DVC Member
SB (67), my husband
Chris (38), son
Amanda (36), daughter-in-law
Ari (8), grandson
Dates: November 8 – 11, 2024
Resort: Disney’s Boardwalk Villas Resort
Experience: Very Experienced – 34th stay at Boardwalk Villas
INTRODUCTION:
This is a short weekend trip intended to spend time with family, use the birthday credits from Landry and Levy, and have one last taste of Food & Wine Festival. Now that Ari’s in school his parents have to work around the school calendar, so they weren’t able to join us on any part of the real Food & Wine trip a couple weeks ago.
Despite only having part of one day to visit Food & Wine I still opted to stay at Boardwalk Villas. It’s nice having the entire Crescent Lake area, easy access to SB’s beloved chicken dinner from Beach Club Marketplace, Skyliner nearby, and for the Hollands it’s very convenient to Hollywood Studios as well as Epcot. I booked a 2-bedroom villa for the five of us.
We’ll arrive on Friday but will not have park access after that. Regardless of the crowds we’ll head into Epcot to try to enjoy some of our Food & Wine favorites. Chris’ family will be arriving later than us, but it should be while Epcot is still open. They’ll have parks access every day.
Saturday & Sunday SB & I will do non-park stuff, including time by the pool. The Hollands will be off to a park each morning, but we’ll catch up with them later. They don’t tend to spend many hours in a park these days. Since Amanda & I both have $15 birthday credits from Levy, I booked lunch for all of us at Paddlefish on Saturday. I’m the only one with a $25 birthday credit from Landry, so I booked breakfast at Rainforest Café for SB & me on Monday morning before hitting the road for home. Sunday Chris’ family will meet up with friends of their who live here around lunch time, and we’ll play the rest of the day by ear.
It should be a pretty relaxing trip for us. The weather will be warmer than normal for this time of year, which is unfortunate. I’m glad I don’t plan to be sweating my way through the parks.
The plans so far are:
Friday 11/8: Drive to WDW, Food & Wine
Saturday 11/9: Pool, Paddlefish lunch
Sunday 11/10: Pool
Monday 11/11: Rainforest Cafe breakfast, Drive to Gainesville

DAY 1 – Friday 11/8/24 Who: Sue (66), DVC Member SB (67), my husband Chris (38), son Amanda (36), daughter-in-law Ari (8), grandson Plan: Drive to WDW, Food & Wine
Actual: Normally we leave at noon but since Boardwalk Villas is such a pain in terms of getting a room ready before 4pm I decided we’d just head out an hour later. With Chris’ family not arriving until around 5pm there really wasn’t much point in us heading to Epcot earlier, just for SB to poop out before the others arrived. How is someone only a year older than me such an old fart???
When I woke up this morning, I felt awful – bad enough that I went back to bed hoping a couple more hours of sleep would help. It didn’t, and I wasn’t able to keep anything down so it must be a little stomach bug. I ended up not going to work at all, and we hit the road with SB driving somewhere after 1pm. Right off the bat Waze told me trip would be longer than normal due to traffic congestion. We lost around 20 minutes or so, but it wasn’t terrible. I was comfortable sitting in the car doing nothing – it’s I move around doing stuff that I start feeling sick.
SB dropped me and our stuff off up top and then went to park the car. I went inside to check on our villa and was pleased to find it was ready! Thank goodness! We got our stuff (on a cart) from the bellman who helped us upon arrival, tipped him, and began the long trek to nearly the end of the long hallway. Just the unpacking was enough to get me feeling unwell again, so I ended up getting into bed. On the way to the room a woman asked if were just arriving and offered us her leftover groceries since they’re leaving in the morning. I ended up taking some yogurt and a package of small tomatoes. I though maybe the yogurt would a good thing to eat, but I only managed half a bite before putting it back in the fridge. Hopefully it stays down.
I laid back in bed and was able to doze off. I woke up when the others arrived, somewhere before 6pm. Ari brought me a birthday present – a beautiful bamboo board in the shape of Florida which I’ll use as a charcuterie board. It’s got many of the cities marked on it and is really nice! He also made me a birthday card, and there was one from Chris & Amanda as well. I got up out of bed and moved out to the living room to see how I’d feel. My plan was to stay back while they went to Epcot, but as time went on and I wasn’t feeling sick I decided to put my shoes on at least walk over there with them. I figured if it was too much I’d just turn around and head back to the resort.
We left around 6:15 and found the Epcot boat sitting at the dock so we ride that over. Once inside (no wait) we headed left. The park was very crowded, which is to be expected on a Friday night. Surprisingly the food & wine booths were not that bad, and they did move quickly. In Canada they had both sides open so that helped a lot. We passed it by, as I wasn’t sure that heavy cheese soup was wise tonight. We stopped at Hawaii and I grabbed an empty bench outside one of the shops. Chris had the spam bowl and Amanda had 2 of the pork sliders. A table opened up so we moved over there to make eating easier.
Continuing on, SB got the shrimp noodle bowl from the Noodle Exchange while we waited for him by the Mexico booth. He enjoyed it. The next stop was the margarita booth in Mexico, where Chris & SB joined the line and the rest of us waited at the exit. SB got the frozen strawberry margarita, and Chris got the seasonal one. It had stuff around the rim of the glass, and it looked pretty. Amanda was reaching for it and Chris was saying “I don’t think you’re gonna like this” but she took a drink and immediately gasped, lol! The stuff on the rim was extremely spicy – I would have guessed it was some type of sugar, but it’s not! She tried it again near the end after Chris had cleared a spice-free area and I think she liked it much better.
We had a nice time strolling around and I was holding up just fine. Ari loves the orange chicken at the counter service place in China, so we stopped there next. I secured a table while SB & Amanda ordered food. She got the adult orange chicken dinner which the 3 of them shared (Ari ate most of it). SB got the chicken fried rice dinner. I ate a couple pieces of chicken from his rice before he doused it all with soy sauce (yuck). I gave Ari the fortune cookie.
We walked more and Chris advised us the gelato in Italy is outstanding. We’ve never tried it, and with diabetes it’s the last thing SB needs (unlike a strawberry margarita, bowl of noodles and plate of fried rice, lol). In Germany Chris & Amanda each got a beer – with some fruit flavor. Flavors of America was our last stop – Chris had written off the hot dogs there but when we told him they were a whole hot dog he changed his mind. He & SB went through the line while Amanda, Ari & I got a table.
Chris got the southwest style dog and seemed to enjoy it. SB stuck with the Carolina style dog and definitely enjoyed. He also brought back 2 of the chocolate pudding cake. He & I ate part of one and Ari ate more than half of the other one. He loved it! There was quite a bit left, so I moved Ari’s piece onto our plate and used his plate as a lid. It’s now in a sealed (with a lid) glass mixing bowl in the kitchen.
They decided to head up front for the Mac & Cheese stand and Ari wanted to do the Tiana thing, so we parted ways at International Gateway. SB & I walked back to the resort – it’s such a pretty walk at night. Some of the entertainers were doing a show outside. We made the long walk down the hallway to our villa and are in for the night. We don’t have a fireworks view, as we’re around the corner from the rounded room that has the last view.
Amanda texted – they’d gotten their mac & cheese, did the Tiana thing and were headed back. It was a beautiful night weather-wise and I’m glad I felt well! Today started out pretty rough but thankfully that should be behind us. It’s good to be back here!
Tomorrow they’re headed to a park for part of the morning. SB & I may hit the pool but will have to leave early to clean up and meet the others at Disney Springs for our noon Paddlefish reservation. After that I think we’re just playing it by ear, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see the others head to another park for the evening.

DAY 2 – Saturday 11/9/24 Who: Sue (66), DVC Member SB (67), my husband Chris (38), son Amanda (36), daughter-in-law Ari (8), grandson Plan: Pool, Paddlefish lunch
Actual: We slept well last night – it was nice & quiet. I’d turned out the lights by 9:30 and didn’t get up until 5:30 this morning. SB was already up. I texted Amanda to let her know the connecting door was unlocked so they could make breakfast before heading out. I think they’re going to MK, where early entry starts at 7:30 today.
I made my cappuccino and brought it back to bed. By 7 the others were up – Ari came in first, hitting SB with a throw pillow and yelling “torpedo”. See what SB started years ago? I got Ari his breakfast – hard boiled egg, sausage links and toast. Chris made his and Amanda’s eggs & toast, then I made my egg and slice of bacon. SB wasn’t hungry so he didn’t eat. They headed out to the Magic Kingdom around 7:45. SB & I changed into swimsuits and headed to the quiet pool around 8:45.
Chris called at 8:30 to say the early entry was really 8:30 (what was on the app) and not 7:30 like was on the tv. That worked great for them since they got there at 8:15 and now won’t miss that first half hour with short wait times. They’re also setting for filming, and I remembered this weekend they’re filming scenes for the Christmas day show. Magic Kingdom will likely be a zoo later, but he said they’ll be gone by then.
The quiet pool was wonderfully quiet at first. A dad was there with 2 well-behaved boys and his infant daughter. SB went into the pool, and I sat on the edge of the pool. After a while I went to my chaise lounge and that’s when a couple other families with multiple noisy children arrived. It was no longer quiet – not by a long shot! The kids were screeching and having fun, but it was not the ambiance expected here. The main pool doesn’t open until 10, which is way too late in my opinion, so I understood why the families were here.
We stayed until just after 10 then headed up for showers. Chris & Amanda texted that they had left Magic Kingdom and were on the bus coming back to the resort. I’d finished my shower, so I let SB know and he jumped in to take his. The Hollands got a lot done in their first hour at the park, pretty much moving from attraction to attraction. They said it was really getting busy when they left at 10, due to the Christmas taping that would be happening.
We headed out to the bus stop, taking the stairwell down near our room and then the walking path across the street to the bus stops. This is a great shortcut vs walking all the way to the lobby and then down the hill to the bus stops. The sky looked dark, so I ran back up to the villa for my umbrella, getting back to the bus stop a couple of minutes before the bus.
As we were riding to Disney Springs it started to rain – hard at times! I was glad I’d gone back for my umbrella, but as soon as we got off the bus the rain had stopped. Go figure. From that point forward it was all sunshine. As we walked in I showed them the new DVC location but learned the new member lounge doesn’t open until noon. We agreed we’d stop back after lunch to take a look at it.
We checked Gideon’s but they were not doing the virtual queue, and we didn’t want to wait in the line (it was to the corner of Morimoto) just yet, so we continued on. It was only 11:35 at this point. SB suggested a drink at Jock Lindsay’s Hangar Bar but that opens at noon. He next asked about the Boathouse & Chris was willing to go drink with him, so we all went in. The inside bar was pretty much full – just a couple lousy seats way at the end, facing a wall/panel. We decided to try the outside bar, and we found a few seats together at one end. Amanda and Ari sat on a couple of them and the rest of us stood.
The bartender was really great – nice guy, quick service, great personality. SB ordered a light beer, and Chris ordered an old fashioned. Amanda & I decided to wait until lunch – in her case she wasn’t going to chug a glass of wine down in 25 minutes and I didn’t want to push it with 2 glasses just yet. The bartender made Ari a pink lemonade – hand made, in a cocktail shaker along with several chunks of fresh strawberries. It looked great and Ari drank it right down so it must have been good! SB ordered another round of drinks for him & Chris, Chris getting his “to go” and then settled the check so we could head out.
Chris ran back to Gideon’s to see about the virtual queue while the rest of us walked around the corner to Paddlefish and checked in for lunch. Chris came back and said they still hadn’t opened it and likely would not. We were taken to our table, which was in the back room where the paddle wheel is visible. At first, they put us along the wall next to a family with a baby and 2 little kids. Chris asked if we could have a table by the window, so they moved us there. We were the only 2 tables occupied at that point, so I didn’t understand why we weren’t given the window right from the start.
The food and the menu here are very good and service is very accommodating. The portions are pretty large, too. SB was still in his “excess” mode, ordering another round of drinks for him & Chris. Amanda and I each chose a glass of wine and Ari got chocolate milk. SB then ordered the appetizer calamari since Chris said he’d eat some, and a large bowl of New England clam chowder. He said it was great, but it was so thick I don’t know how anyone can eat a meal after that! He then ordered another beer and old fashioned.
For the entrée Ari had kids’ pasta alfredo w/chicken, SB had the 9-ounce burger with fries, I had the caprese sandwich with the kettle chips, Chris had the cajun chicken sandwich with the kettle chips, and Amanda had fish tacos with roasted red-skin potatoes. Everything was delicious. Chris’ sandwich was huge, and Amanda had 3 large tacos plus a plate full of potatoes. The fish was a mix of mahi mahi & swordfish, and she liked it. Chris ate her 3rd one and although the potatoes were great many were left behind. I ate more than half my caprese sandwich and Chris finished it – he agreed it was very good.
We settled the checks, which took a while because both Amanda & I had a $15 birthday credit but they only do one per table so our server had to settle one check before she could apply the credit to the other check. We also had the passholder discount to apply to both. Our check was still ridiculous thanks to all the stuff SB ordered (including the expensive cocktails). Chris still had 1.5 old fashioneds left so he poured them into the empty “to go” cup from Boathouse and took them with him.
We walked over to Gideon’s and the line was like it was before, so we joined the queue and SB sat on a bench. He was fading fast (he doesn’t typically drink 4 beers at his age) so I went over to him and gave him the option of going back to the resort and we’d meet him there later. He liked that idea, so I steered him towards the bus stops and hoped for the best.
The wait at Gideon’s was probably 30-40 minutes but at least it was shady and with a nice breeze. When it was our turn, I got a pistachio toffee for me and the banana bread chocolate chip for SB. I’m not sure what the others got. From there we went back to the DVC location and got signed in to be brought upstairs to the lounge. It was much nicer than the dvc member lounge in Epcot! They really made this one right. There’s also a model of a Riviera 2-bedroom villa there but we wondered why they did Riviera rather than the new Polynesian Tower villas.
We hung out for a little bit, the Hollands got some snacks and a beverage, then we headed out. Amanda wanted to try on boots at the Rothy’s store and once that was done, we went to the bus stops. Our bus stop was pretty full and when a bus came, we didn’t initially get seats. Some of the men in the back were insistent that Amanda & I take seats even though I was gesturing that it was fine. In the end we went up there and sat down. I know the old chivalry thing is to offer seats to ladies (especially old ladies) but I don’t agree age or gender entitles me to someone’s seat.
The bus back stopped at Yacht, Beach and finally Boardwalk. SB was laying on the murphy bed watching football. The others went into their bedroom, to lay down for a bit and I started working on the trip report. Chris came over and asked if I wanted to go see the gingerbread house at Grand Floridian and anything at the other monorail resorts, so I figured what the heck. Of course, when I asked SB, he was willing but really wanted to just lay there watching football. Knowing the walking involved would have him complaining I told him it was fine if he stayed behind.
The rest of us headed out and walked over to the Skyliner. It was busier than I’ve ever experienced, but then I don’t have to take it at the end of an Epcot evening. It’s much worse then. We rode over to Caribbean Beach and the line of people waiting to board was massive! We said no way were we coming back this way! We transferred to the Hollywood Studios line (no wait) and from there went to the bus stops and rode to Polynesian.
As expected, there’s no holiday stuff here. The lobby is pretty but it’s so crowded. I can’t imagine once the new DVC tower opens in December – it will be even worse. We hopped on the monorail to Grand Floridian, which was mobbed. The gingerbread house looks nice and of course there was a huge line of people waiting to buy something from the shop inside. We took some pictures and headed out. The line for the monorail here was ridiculous, but they seemed to be running extra trains. No sooner did one leave then another pulled up.
We got off at Contemporary and saw their new gingerbread display, found a lot of the hidden Mickeys and Amanda bought a linzer cookie (short line here). After that we walked over to Magic Kingdom and took the bus back to Boardwalk. All this took quite a bit of time – it’s amazing how transportation eats up your time here!
The Hollands headed for Epcot, so I took Amanda’s cookie to put in their room. SB was still laying on the murphy bed watching football. I swear he hasn’t moved! I asked him about his chicken, but he didn’t want to walk over there. He asked about something closer, so I pulled up the Boardwalk Deli menu. He still didn’t seem to want to get up so I went into the bedroom and updated the report. I’m still full from lunch, so I don’t need anything.
Of course, sometimes you don’t “need” anything but then “want” something. In my case it’s the double dipped chocolate covered peanuts at the Screen Door. They sell them in the bulk candy section – no doubt overpriced, but I buy a small quantity. I knew they’d have milk for SB to have with his Gideon’s cookie (he’d eaten a piece of it earlier with water – I haven’t touched mine yet) and I’d get a discount buying it there.
I asked once more what he planned to do for dinner and he just plain didn’t feel like getting up but hoped I would get him something. He decided the Rueben from Boardwalk Deli would do the trick, so I mobile ordered it. He wanted a diet coke but I figured I’d get that at the Screen Door as well (for the discount). I headed out and as I stepped into the Screen Door I hit the “I’m here, prepare my food” button.
I got the milk, got a coke zero sugar, and was at the bulk candy when I got the alert my order was ready! It couldn’t have been more than 2 minutes! I quickly paid for his beverages and my .12 pounds of candy. The gift card wasn’t working so I used my Disney rewards card instead. Once that was done I rushed over to pick up the sandwich.
The boardwalk was extremely busy tonight! There must have been 20 people in line to order at Blue Ribbon Corn Dogs! The line for the pizza window was even worse. All the tables along the lake were occupied, big crowds of people were walking around, entertainers were entertaining – it was just crazy. Thank goodness for mobile ordering, lol! I walked in the exit door, found the bag with my name on it, and headed back out.
The sandwich comes with a side – cole slaw, chips or tomato basil soup. Had I been hungry for dinner I would have gotten the soup, but since I wasn’t he got the chips. The sandwich was impressive – warm, great marble rye bread and a ton of meat! He couldn’t finish it, so we have a bunch of the meat and some of the bread in the small glass bowl with a lid (in the fridge). He can snack on that at some point tomorrow.
We talked about tomorrow and he asked if I wanted to go to breakfast. That means he wants to go, but since I’m wanting a pool day tomorrow breakfast makes sense, so we don’t need lunch. I used the app to make a 7:30 reservation at Trattoria al Forno downstairs – we’ll share the breakfast pizza again.
Today was a nice day – it was fun hanging out with the Hollands. We were impressed with the new DVC member lounge. If they sold wine up here it would be perfect sitting out on the balcony watching the people down below! The gingerbread house is beautiful (the tree is not up yet) and touring the monorail resorts was just as time-consuming as I remembered. The Rueben was a great find for SB – he has several choices he really likes in this Crescent Lake area.
Tomorrow the Hollands head to Hollywood Studios and will meet up with friends of their who live up here after that. SB & I will spend time at the pool, although I won’t be surprised to see him head up to the villa before I do. No doubt he’ll want to watch some football, and we’ll see what the others are up to later.

DAY 3 – Sunday 11/10/24 Who: Sue (66), DVC Member SB (67), my husband Chris (38), son Amanda (36), daughter-in-law Ari (8), grandson Plan: Pool
Actual: Once again, we slept well and were both up just after 5. I made my cappuccino and we both did our online stuff. I also watched HAL’s Nieuw Amsterdam sail into Port Everglades just before 6. That’s our ship in Alaska next May. The tv once again had the wrong day’s park hours – it shows the correct day/date but the hours from the day before. As an example, it says MK is open until midnight, but the app says 11pm.
The others were up and dressed by 7 so we invited them to join us for breakfast at Trattoria. We headed down there around 7:20 and they were able to accommodate our party of 5. The food and service were excellent. SB changed his mind about sharing the breakfast pizza, which was annoying. Last night he was talking about how we needed to start sharing since it’s so much food, and here he is changing off of that already.
Ari ordered the kids’ pancakes with eggs and sausage. I got the breakfast pizza, Amanda got the adult pancakes with bacon and SB got the 2-egg breakfast with potatoes, bacon & sausage – and added toast. Chris wisely just ate from mine and Amanda’s plates. After breakfast they headed to the Skyliner to get to Hollywood Studios and SB & I went up to the villa. As expected, when I asked if he was coming to the pool, I got waffling about how I know he likes to watch sports on Sunday. True, but at 8:30 in the freaking morning? I pointed out his pattern is he’ll do stuff the first day or 2 of a trip but after that he just lays around doing nothing. Why even come? It’s frustrating sometimes!
I changed into a swimsuit, gathered up my stuff and headed down to the quiet pool. Today it was just perfect down there! At first nobody was around, then one other lady, but eventually several families arrived. Every single one of them were clam & quiet – having fun but without any shrieking or screaming. One family sat in the hot tub. One played the giant chess board. It was so nice!! The weather was perfect too, with a nice breeze to keep things comfortable. I stayed out there until 11:30 then headed upstairs.
SB was watching tv – don’t think he’d moved since I left. We chatted a bit then I took my shower and got dressed. When I came out, I smelled food and he’d heated up the leftover Rueben sandwich. He said it was still good reheated. I had a few bites of the chocolate pudding cake from the booth in America. That needs to get eaten or tossed today, but I imagine Ari will be willing to help!
I packed up what I could and then since it was nearly 1pm I brought the laptop out to the dining table. I can tolerate having sports on the tv but can’t stand most of what SB watches and would stay in the bedroom if people on the screen were getting shot or run over or otherwise hurt. I realize I’m in the minority and I realize it’s acting/fake, but it’s not entertaining to me.
I also looked at the dates I was thinking of for next year’s Food & Wine trip and ran into some problems. The Wine & Dine is earlier next year and the work event I attend on a Saturday is earlier next year, and both fall on the weekend we would have been there. Obviously, that is not happening! I found the dates for the NJ teachers’ convention for 2025 so I can work around that as well, so it looks like it’ll have to be the week of Halloween, staying through the weekend if Chris & Amanda are wanting to come up. I know they like doing Halloween stuff at home and Halloween is on a Friday next year.
Amanda texted to say they were on their way – I was mistaken when they said they were meeting friends for lunch. It was actually a birthday party for their friends’ kid. I poured a glass of wine and finished the packet of mini Triscuits and sliced cheese (Sargento Balanced Breaks). She texted again when they were almost here, and I met them in the parking lot to transfer their Christmas gifts from my trunk to their car. It gave me the opportunity to put my birthday gift in the car rather than carrying it down tomorrow morning.
The Nieuw Amsterdam is due to sail at 3:30 so if I’m in the villa I’ll watch that, but if we (minus SB) head somewhere that’s fine too. Amanda put a load of their laundry in and we all hung out for a while. Just after 3 the Hollands and I left SB watching football to go check out the other resorts around Crescent Lake to see if any had their Christmas decorations up yet. Boardwalk does not.
We started with Swan, which had no signs of Christmas. We decided to check out the Swan Reserve since none of us had been there before. There’s a rooftop bar we wanted to see but unfortunately it was closed for a private event (wedding). Speaking of weddings, last night when we were headed to the Skyliner a wedding was getting ready to happen on that overlook between Boardwalk & Beach Club (with a nice sunset view) and a beautiful Rolls Royce was parked past the bridge from Epcot. The people inside looked older, so perhaps the parents of the bride & groom. Then while on the monorail a wedding party was getting into Cinderella’s coach – it was all lit up and had the white horses to pull it – very pretty.
We checked out what we could see of the Reserve, and they did have a couple pretty Christmas trees inside. Next was the Dolphin, which had no holiday décor. We continued on to Yacht Club, which also had not started with their stuff – the train village and gingerbread lighthouse will come at some point. When we got to Beach Club, the gingerbread carousel was up and running, so at least we got to see that!
Once we got back outside, we parted way by International Gateway. They were headed into Epcot, and I went back to the resort. I made a quick stop in Screen Door for more of the chocolate peanuts then went up to the villa. SB was still watching football. I asked him what he wanted to do about dinner, and it was the chicken dinner from Beach Club Marketplace. They don’t start serving that until 5pm but it was already 4:45 so we left to walk over there. We stopped on the bridge at 4:58 and I mobile ordered the dinner, then hit the “I’m here” button when it turned 5pm.
We had a brief wait and once we had his dinner I mobile ordered myself a cup of the tomato bisque from Boardwalk Deli. We walked over that way and once close to the Deli I hit the “I’m here” button. Today it wasn’t instant like yesterday, so I suggested he go up to the villa before his food got cold. My soup just took a couple more minutes, then I joined him. I had a couple bites of his mashed potatoes – those are so good! I liked the tomato bisque as well, and he enjoyed his dinner. I broke off a small piece of my Gideon’s cookie and that was good too.
At 6 the local news station didn’t have football, so I moved into the bedroom to watch some tv while I was online – pouring a glass of wine to take with me. Most likely I’m in for the night – I know SB is, lol.
Today was a nice relaxing day with perfect weather! Breakfast was a big hit with everyone and I loved my time at the pool. It’s sad to be leaving so soon and seeing all the people arriving today to begin their vacations. Tomorrow SB & I will have breakfast at the Rainforest Café at Animal Kingdom, then head home. I have a lot to do before our cruise! The Hollands are going to Animal Kingdom to do some attractions and possible have lunch at Tiffin’s before going home to be ready for Ari’s hockey practice.

DAY 4 – Monday 11/11/24 Who: Sue (66), DVC Member SB (67), my husband Chris (38), son Amanda (36), daughter-in-law Ari (8), grandson Plan: Rainforest Cafe breakfast, drive to Gainesville
Actual: We slept well again. SB was up shortly after 4 but I didn’t get up until closer to 5. After my cappuccino we started getting ready and finished packing up. The others were up by 6:30. They made their breakfast, but SB & I have Rainforest breakfast booked.
I discovered we’re not blocked out today after all, so I booked us a park reservation at Animal Kingdom. That park opens at 7:30 for resort guests so we’ll be able to do the safari before heading out for breakfast. We loaded up the cars a little after 7 and drove both cars to the park. We were parked in the Peacock section and walked up to the entrance, arriving somewhat after 7:30.
The entry area was quite busy! SB & I walked right up to an empty row, but the others followed the herd into a non-moving line. They eventually moved to another and made it into the park. From there we were scanned to prove we were resort guests and then began the trek to Africa. As we approached, I could see a huge mob outside the safari. Turns out it doesn’t open until 5, so this huge line of people was waiting. Ugh.
They started letting people into the queue around 10 minutes before 8 and the line basically filled up the entire queue. It moved pretty steadily and despite them only loading from one side we were on our truck at 8:06. The safari was very good since so many animals were active. Several were literally running around! We saw almost everything (no white rhinos and only 1 elephant). The driver was very knowledgeable but talked really fast. It was fine for us but for a first timer I think it would be information overload!
After the safari we said our goodbyes to the Hollands and went our separate ways. When we were close enough to Rainforest Café I checked in on the app. We had a short wait to be called to our tables and had a terrific waiter. SB ordered the Breakfast of Bandits (2 eggs, potatoes, sausage & toast. I ordered the French toast (they call it Tonga Toast but it’s not like at the Poly). The food came out really quickly and it was all delicious! SB helped with my French toast, but most people could probably share this and be satisfied.
My $25 birthday credit was applied so the check was only around $10. We settled the check and took the tram back to the car and drove home. Although Veterans Day isn’t a holiday everywhere, it was enough that driving was pretty decent. I think we’ll end next year’s trip on Veterans Day as well.
Overall, this was a nice little trip. The weather was really nice! The Boardwalk refurbishment is beautiful, and the location is great. It was nice having the family together and also nice that people came and went rather than everyone hanging together in a group 24/7. I wish SB was more active and less tv-focused but that’s not going to change at his age!
My next trip begins in 11 days. SB & I will be driving to Disney’s Vero Beach Resort to meet cruise buddy Fran and spend one night. The next morning we’ll continue to Port Everglades and all board HAL’s Zuiderdam for 11 nights in the Caribbean. The next WDW trips will be in January – a Jambo House club level weekend in early January and another family long weekend at Boulder Ridge in mid-January.

Sounds like another fun trip with many more on the horizon. Can't wait to hear about those too! FYI relative to the Swan Reserve, I'm pretty sure the top floor space is for private events only. I had also heard "rooftop bar" when in construction and was disappointed.

It’s sad to be leaving so soon and seeing all the people arriving today to begin their vacations. It seems I feel this way every time we are leaving… As always, I very much enjoyed your trip report. Thank you! I hope you and SB have a great time on your cruise!
