Hey I'm not looking for sympathy or anything here, I just wanted to type a little about what's going on in my life and connect with a few of my virtual friends. I lost my oldest brother almost two weeks ago, and attended his funeral last weekend. He was a good man, but was dealt a crappy hand health-wise, losing his life at just 51 years. He had type I diabetes as a kid and that most definitely shortened his life span. He had lots of health scares, had some transplants, and then toward the end, got melanoma and a brain tumor. On the other hand, he had a great life. He had 3 kids, a loving wife, tons of friends, and a loving family. Nobody's perfect, but he was respected, honorable, and caring of others -- and was someone to be held up as an example for how we should all treat each other. We honored and celebrated his life. Cried and laughed, and came closer together as a family as we shared memories of this great man. I, thankfully, got to say my goodbyes to him a week before he passed. Life is fleeting and is short. Enjoy it! Go to Disney World, lol. Hug and appreciate your loved ones. Tell them how you feel, and don't take the good things you have for granted! That kind of thing is why we’re here. My sweetie and I have both successfully forged ahead through life threatening health issues in the past few years and our Mouseowners friends have been a huge blessing and help through it all. As Jerry said, God bless you all.

Thanks all for the condolences -- you are very kind.
As I reflect on the fragility of life and the small amount of time we have to enjoy it, my wife and I reflect on our decisions and have found that we *could* have put ourselves in a better position financially by saving more instead of taking trips and vacations with each other and with our kids, but we've found that the experiences we have and the memories we make are more important, and we stand behind that still. It would be a shame to accumulate wealth and then wait too long to be able to actually use it. The kids are only with us a few short years, and who knows what our mobility and health will be down the road, so now is the time to do those things.

A few years ago, I ran into a high school classmate/friend on the train from NYC to Philadelphia. I hadn't seen him since we graduated. He makes a lot of money, has a ridiculous (IMO) daily commute. He works on the train both ways. He was blunt in describing his life, "I do very well but it cost me one marriage and it will probably cost me the second one. I belong to a country club that I never use; the wife and kids use the pool."

Enjoy the musical, Jerry! I'm on my way to freaking New Jersey to see my nephew (the blood one) in Pippin. No idea the story, think he plays an old man. Based on growing up with his father and uncle should be easy for the lad... Also Mother must see me every three months so should be good until June/July... Stephen Schwartz who wrote Pippin was a couple of years ahead of Jack at college.

I have to say that I am enjoying babysitting. It's exhausting, although I don't know why as mostly I sit and read interspersed with washing/folding laundry and making beds (apparently making the bed is something that's not 'done' anymore - eh, I can't stand wrinkles - but I noticed that the eldest seems to be making her bed more. LOL). She's exhausted and stressed. Toys litter the house. She's probably ready to hit me with a brick but I can't stand a drying rack filled with dry clothes so I fold them, even if they belong to the her eldest (so, yes, I am circumventing some discipline there). I draw the line at putting the folded clothes away for her eldest and those two (seems invasive) but I do put the baby and 4y old clothes away. The drying rack is folded and stored, toys are returned to their POO and house is generally neatened. Oh well, it's my 'fee'. If she thinks me tinkering around her house is a pain she'll change her mind when the tween becomes a teen and the 4y matures into a tween. By then the baby boy should be in school and I can return to fielding 3AM texts (she know I wake up in the middle of the night to read my kindle app until I can fall back asleep).
Wiltony, condolences on your loss. We've suffered similar losses and have drawn similar conclusions. We are creative about covering vacation expenses for preservation of their self esteem. Enjoy your family vacations.

Doing some work in the kitchen, I needed a normal, screw-in Edison-style light bulb. So I go to my cabinet where I find that I don't have any...at least, not modern LED versions. I'm not going to go buy one, this is temporary. But what I DO have are a handful of good-ole incandescent bulbs. You know, the 99% space heater, 1% light emitting, 4-8 Ohm white-hot resistor that we all grew up with. So I pick a 75-Watt version and go screw it in. It works. It makes light. It also gets very very hot...I forgot how hot they get.
I told my wife that what's funny is that one light bulb probably pulls more power than all the other lights on in the house at one time. It kind-of ran my life - I would be conscious of the wasted power and go back and turn it off if I was going to leave the room for any real length of time.
Two weeks later (today) I hit that switch and "pop" out it goes. I kinda forgot what it's like to have a light bulb burn out, that unexpected sound and that sudden flash, makes you jump a little.
I decided not to screw a new one in. Stupid light bulb.

Hilarious (ymmv) anecdote from my bus driver days, I was thinking of this for some reason. I almost always wore prescription sunglasses while driving, with the thick chrome like the Matrix. By the time the little kids were getting on the bus, the sun was up, so it was sunglasses for sure. So the little kids never saw me without sunglasses.
Sometimes, one would ask me, "What do your eyes look like?" or "Let me see your eyes!" I would explain to them that I wore the sunglasses because I was blind, like blind people on tv. After a moment they'd say "No, you're not blind!" I would tell them that I don't even have eyes. "How do you drive if you can't see?"
"I don't need to see."
"How do you know when to turn?" they would say.
"I just listen for the screams!"
