No snow, but 18 here. I'd take any of the 50+ temps Officially a mom of a 16 year old today. I'm super proud of all he does. Though hopeful he passes his DL test his first try Saturday. Happy birthday to your son! and best wishes on the driving test! my son just passed his last week through the driving school here, so as soon as the DMV gets the results we'll have a licensed driver too. Yikes!!

Out of 3 kids, the only one I wanted to have a DL was our eldest because of going away to College 3 states over. I felt she needed ID. I made the other two wait until they were 17. I felt like crying when the youngest joined our insurance roster (and I shoulda cried! Geez!).

Yikes!! Thanks for the wishes! About to gave his favorite local take out. Congrats on your son passing! I did a motorcycle endorsement where I had to wait like that via a school. I don't think any car driving schools locally allow for that due to different requirements for car vs motorcycle. So I'll get in line and hope he passes as I wait. Around here it's hard to not have your license unless someone from your family or a neighbor can drive you a lot. My sister didn't get hers until she was over 18 because she had me as a driver. There are no buses to the high school, we have a lot of activities revolving around band and the musicals. So I kind of pushed my kid to get his license when I did. I realize we could have a lousy winter and he won't be able to drive as much, but at least he will have the license for when days are nice and he can drive himself for the next few months. Or at leasr that's the hope

Well the kid did it. Passed his driver's test! We had about a 40 minute wait past scheduled time, but he got a really easy going instructor who made him not too nervous. Minor deduction while driving, and perfect on maneuverability (look up Ohio maneuverability if you don't know, it's worse than parallel parking - I did it too 30 years ago). So quite happy.
Celebrated his 16th with family after for lunch. Now playing D&D with friends.
Apparently our tree lot did well today. 69 trees left.

A happy 16th milestone to your son. Congrats on passing his drivers test too! And curious about Ohio’s worse than Parallel parking part of the test. I passed mine in NJ, but became an expert when my friend lived on one of those narrow streets in South Philly, but served me well. Can still back a suv into one, lol. Great news on success of the Xmas trees. Is your sons bday the 29th?

We have cones to mimic movement similar to parallel parking, but you touch a cone, you fail. Stop too much, you fail. Don't line your car up properly before reversing or at the end, you get major deductions off and possibly fail. I can parallel park on either side of the street but I don't want to do this ever again lol A really large portion of driver's ed in cars focus on it. Kid had learned in early July and practiced about 1x a week for 5 months to make sure he passed it. Funny enough my spouse learned in NoVA near DC and had a super easy test. No parallel parking. Friend who was nearby but different school just got a waiver to pass once completed. No test taken. Not sure the current fail rate but roughly a quarter failed when I was in school.

I pulled out of the parking lot, went a block and made a right turn. Another block, then left turn. Another block, another left turn. A block back to the highway, left turn, and back to the parking lot. I think that was it. My kids had it much harder than that.

I think it's easier to do maneuverability now than it was for me because of all the backup cameras, tilting mirrors and sensors and such. The driving portion isn't too long, but they intentionally have places and busier areas with more confusing parts on the route. I think they are pickier now with the driving portion then they were when I was a kid. I think my generation if you pass the maneuverability you figured you could pass the driving portion, though I do know some who failed the driving only. And they always made you do maneuverability first. Apparently that's still true now. I think that's a bit nerve-racking actually. I know more kids who fail the driving portion now. Maybe because we focus so much on maneuverability maybe.

My grandson also is learning to drive in Texas . The family has started a new holiday tradition for this year… he is driving the family around to view all the decorated homes this year and next year will be his sisters turn as she will be driving then. And then they go to his choice to dine before going home. I thought it would be fun if he drove us around when they visit Florida but he only has a permit and isn’t legal in Florida .
That maneuver test is serious. All States should require it . I’ll have to ask him if he could pass.

I joked with the tester as I was giving the proof of in car and class completion notices that I couldn't even pass it now. I'm pretty sure the car in the video passed but they stopped way more than I'm comfortable with. You are only supposed to stop at the edges of the cones before changing direction and not during the test. Points off for stopping at any other time. It's kinda stressful. Made parallel parking a cinch. Good for my kid as all parking at the school until senior year (if you get a slot) is street parking. I laugh when people say Ohio is easy to pass since we don't do parallel parking, but we have that monster instead. We probably have a higher than average pass rate in the state too but kids here are often driving on farms from early ages. Though my dad said he failed his first test due to nerves way back (he's almost 80 now)
