Calories. Eat less calories, weight drops. Eat too many calories, weight goes on. Certainly true and an important factor in weight loss.

So our main car has decided it no longer wants to be our car. Wife's beloved 2000 Volvo with 296,xxx miles, we were hoping to celebrate that 300k milestone within the next couple months but the transmission had other plans. I have messed with it but I decided it's shot and the value of the car is no-where near the cost of having it replaced. I could pull another at my favorite junkyard for $110 but I am no longer 21 years old and while I have done it in the past (on rear-wheel cars) I looked at pics on the web and I said "I don't want to ever do that again"
So I figure I can milk it for the ten mile drive to a local junkyard, I have to call them and see what they will pay me for it. OR option (B) is I can drive it 20 miles to a scrapyard where they are doing about $180/ton so I would get close to $300 for it. Problem is, I would have to take the highway through the city and if the thing breaks down, I don't really want to be on three or four lanes of speeding traffic on both sides with little shoulder to pull over. The junkyard is 10 miles and on the highway, but I would be in the countryside with lots of room to pull over. I think the transmission will hold out good enough if I can just drive nice. If I need to I can pull over and read/erase the codes if/when it throws the lights on the dash and puts the trans into limp-mode...hee hee
So that's sad, losing the car, but mostly because we wanted to make that 300,000 mark. But we were very nearly there. But the REAL hard part is finding another car! What the heck is up with used cars these days. People think they can get $$$ for their heaps of garbage, I just don't get it. We are going to go look at some stuff in the sub-$5000 range after lunch (things that should be like $3000 tops or $2500, if whatever is going on with used cars was normal again). And we don't feel like buying something for $30k like a 2020 Subaru we test drove, and I believe in cheap cars. So we will see what we end up with.

A friend in grad school had a Volvo named Ingrid. Ingrid passed on years ago and it was a similarly emotional sendoff.
RIP mrs. Adelard's Volvo.
Cheers.

Cheap cars:
I know it's not the year 2010 anymore but I remember working in a factory, small town life. A guy invited me to go with him and some buddies to a car auction. I said yes, I ended up not getting anything but he left there with THREE CARS for under $500 total, they were all early 1990s Chryslers with the v8, they all ran and drove, he was going to use them in demolition derby. A friend of his got two cars for a few hundred. They were all telling me about the time they pooled their money and got like a 1992 Dodge Neon for like $75 or $100 and all they did was drive around in it like maniacs at night on those country roads like Dukes of Hazzard. When it was dead again, they scrapped it and got half their money back. Sounds like a blast.

Oh, I know that sad feeling. Hubby made me give up my Cadillac DTS around 270,000 miles seeing I was driving back and forth from MI to IL by myself. Said all the parts just had so much age and use, best to retire her. I was soooo sad. Loved that car! So reliable and great in snow. Tell your wife sorry but she’ll find the right one (I’m now driving a Cadillac SRX. Doesn’t “glide” like my DTS because it’s a SUV but still a great vehicle.)

I feel for you with the Volvo. I was sad losing my Civic SI. I also feel for you with buying used cars. It's still nuts out there. We got super lucky with our find for my 16yo (friend selling). It's not fun at all out there. Good luck!

It's not fun at all out there. Good luck! My brother-in-law, who has always been a used car buyer, found it made more sense to buy a new car through a search service this time around. Yes, used cars were crazy during the supply chain meltdown of the pandemic. And it seems that it really hasn't eased much even though supply chain is closer to normal now. I can't explain it, but it seems it just is.
Cheers.

Just got attacked by 6 dwarves. Not Happy. What do you call a Frenchman wearing sandals? Philippe Philoppe. I love to tell dad jokes. Sometimes he laughs. Why couldn’t the lifeguard save the hippy? He was too far out, man. Which rock group has four guys who can't sing or play instruments? Mount Rushmore. Hope everyone's enjoying the last day of 2023.

The joke I always use is, "Two guys walk into a bar. The third one ducked."
But nobody ever gets it. Which is why I like it!

New Year's Miracle: (actually this was yesterday) I was pulling laundry out of the dryer, I fold as I go rather than dump it into a hamper like I assume most people do. Anyways, I pull out one of wife's socks...and the matching sock was stuck to it in perfect orientation! The laundry folds itself!!!!!

As brp noted - the pandemic supply chain melt down caused basically a lost year of car production & since cars have a shelf life if you don't produce more at the same rate, then used cars have to fill the gap. That being said - used car prices have finally started going down. Honestly a car that I have liked as a car rental in Orlando is the Chevy Malibu - you can find 3 yr old cars w/ 20k miles for half the cost of new.

I still miss my Saab and the great German mechanics at George’s Imports in Kansas City !
If you are ever in the WDW area and need service, I can recommend Starling Chevrolet . Pretty sure WDW leases and services the Minnie Vans at this location.
Also great service for my 2012 Jeep at Central Florida Chrysler DodgeJeep on Commodity Circle off John Young Parkway .
And if you ever want to buy a car VIP Sales ,Retired Navy , speaks 5 languages at the Central Florida location …probably deserves a lot of respect for his “Service” …
