Been thinking about your coffee issue. DH travels quite a bit and brings coffee home from all over the world. He just came back yesterday from a business trip to Columbia and he brought coffee in his carry on. He said they did a random bag check but said nothing about the coffee. Once in the US he went through security with no questions. I wonder why Orlando has different rules? Again, so sorry you had to go through this, but glad your trip was still a good one!

I wonder why Orlando has different rules I'm quite sure that they don't This is one agent making their own decision and not knowing what they're talking about. One bad example does not signify a trend. Pretty sure that coffee is safe at MCO going forward.
Cheers.

Coffee isn’t banned. It’s specifically allowed on the TSA website. This woman was just being super difficult which really makes no sense to me because my kids and I had just witnessed the same fight she did. I don’t know why she decided to make our day worse. I’m just happy we got home on our flight, and thank goodness for SWA!

Traveling often brings out the worst in people. I'm sorry you and your kids had to be near that fight. Only to be topped off with TSA issues and a wrong terminal. Glad you made your flight.

Based on the title, I was prepared for some hyperbole. But, yup, “harrowing” hits the nail on the head. So sorry but glad you survived!

What a nightmare! Glad your overall trip was a success but that’s a lot of stress to end with.

I did have an MCO TSA person announce if we had coffee it should come out of the luggage. That was years ago. I often take the extra packs from DVC villa's so I took them out. I though at the time it was weird and if they hadn't have mentioned it I wouldn't have. I often travel with a baggie of coffee and filters. Now we've paid the price for TSA approval so I don't usually take anything out. Geez.

We've wound up printing rules because TSA agents would make stuff up. I am glad you made it home though after all of that.

They (TSA) give themselves an out:
"The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint."
Although their site says that coffee (beans/ground) is permitted in checked and carry on bags, an agent can still tell you it's not. That's absurd IMO.

Though we found that printed rules (even knowing the caveat) seemed to put them in their place. We had food issues with my kid (reflux and even water had to be distilled for formula) and 'fought' a lot to keep him able to eat. I wish they'd drop the theater, but looks like ours won't any time soon.

I have found it tends to be items that they cannot see through. I had to take food with me for years. My cereal in the box caused problems. It was when I was flying out of Midway. I am not sure about MCO because it was gone when we flew home out of MCO. When we fly out of MCO to KY, I packed it in my checked bag. I packed my coffee in the checked bag as well. I will continue to do so. Then I've heard not to pack food in checked bags too so who knows!

We had the beginnings of a similar incident where I always carry juice boxes for my diabetic son (best product for his body to quickly get him out of a diabetic low). They (two TSA agents) pulled my 7 year old off to the side because of his needles in his backpack and the juice asking/grilling him. I get over there telling he’s a diabetic and show them the doctors note I keep with me when traveling. They wouldn’t even look at it. Just as momma bear was just coming out of me, another TSA agent walks over, asks what in the world is going on and turns red in the face. She apologized to my Son, handed him his backpack and told us it was okay to move on. As we were walking away we could hear her giving those two a talking to…..”my Father is a diabetic and if I saw you treating him like the way you treated that boy there’d be problems. Get yourself educated.”

I'm sure there are thousands of horror stories of mistreatment by TSA agents. This was ours... A few years ago DW fell in the middle of the night and had to be medflighted to Boston. She had broken her neck in two places and had torn an artery from the inside. Long story short, she had two rods with screws put alongside her vertebrae and thankfully has no lasting ill effects. Two months later her surgeon said that it was ok for her to fly so we headed to WDW for a much needed break. Heading home and going through security at MCO the TSA agent pulled her aside because she was wearing a soft neck brace. The agent insisted that she had to examine the brace and began pulling and squeezing it even after my wife told her that she was hurting her. Seeing my DW in pain I tried to intervene and told the agent that we could just take the brace off. I can't make this up... as she's still hurting my wife by pushing and pulling she says to me "I can't ask her to take it off"' as I'm trying to tell her that we're offering to take it off. I'm gonna say it again... the world is full of idiots.

That's awful, but glad you made the flight, and that SWA was nice about it.
