Guys, not sure where to put this. I thought about Trip reports since this is about an upcoming Non-Disney Trip to France (yes, finally my DW will get her 50th Birthday (3 years late) Loire Valley...with an add on since now taking DD with us for her 16th birthday trip.
Anyway, We are staying in Amboise for first 4 nights then going to Sancerre for 4 nights (My DW favorite wine). Neither Amboise or Sancerre are the main cites/towns of Loire. Transportation from Amboise was going to be a combo of a train ride (not a big deal, we love Euro trains) and then a Bus or a Taxi...not as big a fan of those. Private Drivers were over 600 Euro for the 2 hour drive (4 hour round).
I had been looking at rental cars but the closest place to get one was Tours which is a 15 min train back from Amboise and really no place to drop off around Sancerre which meant taking it all the way into Paris at the end of the trip. Basically back to over 700 Euro total and only real options was Sixt and maybe Avis.
well, I just happened to look at my Amex Travel with my platinum card and woah, got the Avis car for under $360 starting our first night. Instead of taking train from Tours to Ambois I will drive, keep the Rental, and return in in Paris Monparnasse before we go to our hotel. Best part is I have enough points to pay for all but $40 of the rental! And yes, that is dollars, not Euro! IT is Avis. And I have Platinum card as my protection if somethign is wrong.
So, lesson, always look at the services your premier cards offer you.
