So I am in the middle on this. No one side is right. This is a power play, sorry started by Disney. If Disney thinks they are going to become, stay, their own entity, it’s over. This will be a long drawn out event if some type of negotiations don’t start happening on both sides. And Iger, get out from behind your pompous attitude and start negotiating. This is going to be an example where the governor is going to show big business you are not above the government. And what, exactly, should Iger offer in negotiations? When I am in the middle of a negotiation, I always try to see what the other side needs. What does Florida or its politicians “need” that Disney can give to them? Now that the Board of the Special District has made clear that they view their job as influencing Disney to change the nature of the entertainment it offers — and it appears to be that Disney should ONLY offer what they like, not that Disney should MOSTLY offer that — , how can Disney negotiate?

I cant answer that. We all have no idea of the total issues. I have read lawyers are at work and maybe some type of compromise will happen. Again Disney started this, now how about show some humility and compromise. Going against the government is never a win.

DeSantis is refusing to negotiate. Non issue there.
Also seriously this is getting very uncomfortable to read since I know point of views on who started it and what the govt is allowed to do to a private company are obviously different due to biases and sources and feelings.
Please keep in mind when posting. We have no rules against politics here but this isn't fun to watch on my end

Disney is a private business. The government has no place here. It makes me uncomfortable to see the Governor of a state or the legislature step in and try to regulate a business in the private sector due to cultural or lifestyle difference. Disney is my happy place and seems to be for millions. State needs to stay in their lane. Millions of people in Florida need the income that Disney brings them.

Yep, Disney (Chapek) started this, and Gov. DeSantis intends to finish it. You can't fight city hall. The rightness or the wrongness of either side has become irrelevant.

I still don’t understand what De Santos wants to finish this. Say, in 2 or 3 years, Disney loses its final appeal and all the most recent actions by the Special District are voided. What happens next?

I have been a Republican most of my life and since at least the time of Ronald Regan, I thought Republicans stood for limited government. If a Governor or Legislature can do this to Disney, they can do it to any business within their jurisdiction that may not agree with their policies. I guess the overall message is: Keep your mouth shut and go along to get along. "Silence is the voice of complicity." Fr. Roy Bourgeois

Lol stop "checking out" and then coming back, you too!
Anyway, I disagree that the Constitution is not a living document. It has and should change with the times. It has changed 27 times already!
I'm curious if you feel that DeSantis's actions against Disney are constitutional? It seems to me that what he did was a violation of free speech, but I'm curious as to your take.
Sorry for Delay. I checked out again (Single dad this week and it is harder now with the teenager than when she was young..ugh..) I fully agree the Constitution is a "Living Document" if you mean by the amendment process. That is at is intended. I Do not believe it is living from the judiciary decisions. On either side of our politics. It says what it says. It is when our legal system "interprets" we have issues it seems. As far as FL and the actions of the FL legislature (we are using DeSantis but it was legislative action that moved it) I honestly do not know. I do not know FL law and if I did I am not a lawyer, let a long a State Specific Constitutional Lawyer. In my POV RCID should never have been legal. We used to have those kind of arrangements in Eastern KY and it was called a "Company Town" with the "Company Store" where miners got paid with "Company Credit" that could only be spent at the Company Store. I do not see it as a violation of Free Speech. I will say that. He did not stop them from saying anything. BUT, and this is the big but for us citizens today. Our Constitution provides us a guarantee of free speech, even lies are free speech. BUT you are not guaranteed there are not consequences of that free speech. Disney took a political stance against a governor that just got over 60% of the vote in FL. Their market analysts blew it (Ask Anheiuser Busch about those type of Consequences). You can say what you want. You can believe it with all your heart and being. But does not mean there are not other consequences of saying it AND because you believe it to be so does not make it so and you cannot make others accept it or act on it. That seems to be a lost concept of this culture war. I do not have to follow your wishes....nor you mine. And that does not make me or you a bigot or facist.

Disney WAS the government at RCID. Period. It basically appointed all of the Board. It was the classic definition of a "Company Town" just done at the allowance of State Government. Disney made a tactical decision to get involved in a State Wide Decision that poked the bear and had that State Government pull their allowance of that arrangement. Dumb move by Disney.

I don't think of it being in anyway a "Dumb" move by Disney. They were, as we all should do, speaking up for people on the fringes and who are marginalized by the establishment. Take a look at how many laws are being passed in Florida and other states to try to ostracize certain people in our society because of the color of their skin or sexuality or ......

But see the 2nd part to my post. Speech can have consequences. And we have differing views on the steps the State of FL is making about Education and what is taught in schools. Our students perform at the bottom of the world's advanced economy students. Maybe get back to Math, Science, and English and instead of passing kids for trying hold them accountable. And stop any indoctrinating subjects from the left and the right.

I can’t believe that you really think that it is okay to have one set of laws that politicians adopt for those that agree with them and a second set that apply to those that don’t agree with them. If Special Districts are bad in the eyes of the Florida legislature, then all 1800+ should be treated the same. And I would argue that the process Florida is undergoing to make sure it’s textbooks are “woke” is a distraction and it would be more beneficial if that time and energy went into making sure that textbooks do the best job possible at teaching the subject. And when schools remove all the books from the school library out of fear of offending even a single parent, this makes it more difficult for students to attain excellent reading skills.

I see no evidence that any of today's textbooks are teaching the critical subjects. AGain, we are almost dead last in student achievement of advanced economy nations. When I was in school there was ZERO taught about cultural issues. That is not the role of our education system. And it is showing in results. I am unaware of any issues and actions that are sets of laws that poltiicians adopte for those that agree and differing for those that disagree with them. I would like examples because I agree with you, that is not correct and I think would be unconstitutional both at the state and federal levels. Now, if you are saying they take a different position on what is allowed and not allowable based on subject then you justed described politics. Both sides do that all the time.

Maybe it is time to move these to private discussions?
I know I am holding my tongue when reading many things here, and I can imagine many would rather discuss information at hand vs reading debates on the educational system etc

Now, if you are saying they take a different position on what is allowed and not allowable based on subject then you justed described politics. Both sides do that all the time. Here is an example: Reedy Creek Special District was the only Special District that will no longer have a Board voted by the residents and will have a Board appointed by the Governor. All other Special Districts can continue as before. So the 1 Special District has new rules and the 1800+ formed after do not. In case it wasn’t clear that Disney was the target, DeSantos called this an action aimed at “Dissolving the Corporate Kingdom” meant to end Disney’s self-governing status. Further, although law HB 9-B enacted to make the changes to the Special District formerly known as Reedy Creek specifically provided that “ The provisions of this act shall not affect existing contracts that the district entered into prior to the effective date of this act ….” , as we now know that was insufficient. As promised by the Governor, a new proposed law (SB 1694) would essentially back-date the effective turnover and prevent the new Board from complying with any agreement entered into in the 3 months prior to the change in control. I’m sure this was entirely unrelated to anything Disney did [insert sarcasm emoji here].
