Late (delayed) SWA flight last night. We're sitting on the plane at the gate. I'm listening to a podcast at a volume loud enough to drown out airplane noises, and I hear, "FLIGHT ATTENDANT!! FLIGHT ATTENDANT!!" from a woman sitting in 4A (I'm in 5D). I stop the podcast. The flight attendant gets to the woman, who hands the FA her cell phone; the FA asks, "Why are you handing me your phone and who do you want me to talk to?" The woman says, "I called 911 because there is something wrong with the captain." She kept on insisting that something was wrong with the captain.
The FA asks the woman why she thinks this, and I couldn't make out every word, but it was along the lines of "He said earlier that we'd be leaving soon and we're still sitting here, so there must be something wrong with him." The FA gets stern, tells the woman that there is nothing wrong with the captain, that we are waiting for luggage of late arriving passengers to be loaded onto the plane.
A person a few rows in front of me was watching the interaction, apparently made eye contact with 911 lady, who then says, "Yeah, I called 911 to protect all of us. Something is wrong with the captain." A few minutes later, she and her male companion (husband? he said not a word the whole time) were removed by an SWA supervisor without incident.
It was surreal.

Man, some people just should not fly. Weird.

Either she has some type of mental health issue or was on something. Glad they got off if she was that distressed. Something was clearly wrong. Sounds like she needed to get off the plane if she was that worried as it may cause issues later. Maybe she had an extreme fear of flying??? Who ever knows anymore.

Wow! That sounds awful. I am so sorry you went through that. Hope it wasn't too long of a delay for you.

I often wonder if 911 calls like that should be addressed in a punitive fashion. Our GC at 3 kept activating the emergency call feature on my daughters cell. My sister has had the locals show up at her door many times because her dementia spouse calls when he can't find her. She's in a tough situation. I wonder about the constant/consistent misuse of 911 by people compromised by age and health issues.

I wonder about the constant/consistent misuse of 911 by people compromised by age and health issues. No idea on 911 calls, but I know at least around here, multiple runs from the police on false alarms from the alarm company will result in a fine. (We had a situation a couple of times where a pet apparently managed to set off the motion detectors, and the alarm company couldn't get a hold of us to check so they contacted the police. We have moved motion detectors a couple of times to avoid the issue, and knock-on-wood have been good for awhile. But cats jumping on things hard can set them moving, and set them off!) After a single false alarm, we received a warning letter. I believe it happened twice (but in different years, so the clock apparently started again). 911 may be a bit harder - if the person truly believes there is an emergency, you don't want them to not ask for help. Although some calls are clearly ridiculous; you hear of people calling for things like a late pizza delivery.

Elderly and confused, or impatient. She appeared to be coherent. Not slurring her words. She put up no resistance when they removed her from the plane, which suggests (in my non-professional opinion) that she really believed that something was wrong. But calling 911 vs, pushing the FA button and asking what was causing the delay was bizarre.
