I have 20 (Feb UY) points in holding that I will be unable to use. But that's not the point of this thread....the point is how I got them.
In June, I had reserved an AK (Kidani) studio until 6/24. I also had reserved a BCV 2-BR for 6/23-6/30).
I knew the night of 6/23 would be unused (I moved into the 2-BR at BCV late in the day on 6/23), but I also knew I would be using the Kidani room way past 11 (for my 2-year-old DGS' nap), so I figured it was a good use of points even if I wasn't going to sleep at Kidani the night of 6/23.
I just now checked my points-and-reservations and discovered I had 20 points in holding. I couldn't figure out how that had happened, so I called MS. Turns out DVC characterized my check-out (at around 4 on 6/23) as a cancellation and put the 20 points for that night in holding.
I thought that was impossible....so now I'm wondering if it's a DVC site glitch that will eventually get fixed and so I really don't have 20 points in holding, or if these are "real" points I might (unlikely tho it seems right now) be able to use....any ideas?
I'm shaking my head over this. I thought once a reservation has begun, leaving early forfeited the points of the nights remaining. And certainly canceling hours after check-out time "should" mean the points would be forfeited? In any event, I don't see much of any possibility of using those 20 points, but "never say never." I can't add time to my existing 2023 reservation because I already have plane tickets purchased and dog-care arranged. I don't have enough points either in 2023 or to borrow from 2024 to book another trip (particularly within the limits of the holding rules). But mostly I'm concerned that these aren't "real" points and so I shouldn't even think about how I might use them.
Would appreciate hearing what you-all think of this (to me) strange situation! Thanks....Dani

Intriguing, indeed. I wouldn't worry about it too much since as you said you can't really use them anyway. But for now seems like a nice little dose of pixie dust. You're right that that points should have been forfeited, but apparently they were not. And if you can make a last-minute trip happen, so much the better. If the system allows you to book with the points in holding I'd be pretty confident that they won't be canceled.

I often double book my rooms during a split stay so that we always have a room. I started doing this for my mother who had to have a room to lie down. We have never had the points show up as a hold or credit. It was smart to hold the studio until you moved to the BCV because those rooms are usually not ready until after 4. In 15 years of staying at BCV I think my room has only been ready before 4 maybe 40 percent of the time. It seems like you got pixie dusted.

Not adding to this thread but it reminded me: this last trip they were so shorthanded (I assume) at housekeeping that it was fabulous that they didn't keeping knocking at our door at 10:15, 10:30, 10:45, "just wanted to see when you were checking out." We closed the door behind us and drove away at like 12:30 and never heard a word. I want all my trips to be like that

No one bugged us once. I have not done enough split stays to even think about the double booking. I'm torn on this. Nice if you can use points in holding but kind of a waste what they did.

Did you ask MS to move them out of holding?

No, I didn't ask for those 20 points to be moved out of holding--per the rules I shouldn't have them at all, and if I do have them, they would certainly be holding points. I can think of no argument that would pass the red face test to justify asking for them to be moved out of holding.

World needs more of that these days.

I wouldn’t have expected to get those points back either.
You say you have another trip booked. Can you try and upgrade the room to use those holding points? Obviously the chances are small but you could put in a waitlist once you’re within the 60 days of your arrival date. Just a thought.
Or is there anyone you can gift them to who would be able to make use of them - IF you can book anything of course.
