There have been an increase in the number of people reporting recently that reservations are being merged without being requested. (Meanwhile some people are waiting days for reservations to be merged at their request.)
Many members do this so they can look to switch one or both at 7 months. Once the reservations have been merged it can’t be undone unless there is still availability. One of the DIS mods emailed Member Services and has been told it shouldn’t be happening and they will pass it on to mgt.
But to be safe, if you do book 2 or more reservations for the same room type & category and do not want them merged, make sure you add an extra guest to one of them, or use a different name for the lead guest. They cannot then be merged.
It would probably also be useful if more people emailed Member Services about it.

I think I have the exception to this. So far they have not touched my UY crossing reservation. Been almost 2 months now. Just checked and same number of guests too.

I've had a 5 night October trip pieced together over 3 reservations all in SSR standard studio. I reserved the last piece in mid May. In early August (via Chat) I made the request to merge them into one. The following week it was merged.

When they do them at other times they may completely screw up plans. If you wanted to do a split stay and don’t have spare point s to use, then at 7 months you’d have to drop days and then try and book those days at another resort. Meaning you risk losing those days altogether.

I noticed this over the summer - same thing - I left mine separate as I was not sure if one of the kids friends were going to join us for part of our stay. good to know that I should leave names different so they cannot merge

For some strange reason booking/merging a single reservation over UYs is an issue with DVC. We have done this a few times, late January into early February and it turns into a cluster. It gets done but it isn’t easy.

So far they have not touched my UY crossing reservation. A UY crossing reservation! Oh man that's like a scene from Ghostbusters right there. "I thought you told me that crossing the streams was bad!" "Not necessarily, there's definitely a very slim chance that we will survive." I've got a reservation that starts on Day One of my UY. We were talking about maybe MAYBE adding on the day before...but all this talk about UYs on this and another thread makes me realize that if I started the trip the day before, it would be this UY and not the upcoming UY and I won't have points or be able to borrow them. (maxed out as I recall). Hm. Perhaps I could buy one-time points. But nobody wants to spend that kind of money!

I'm very sorry, but I don't understand why someone would have 2 reservations in the first place and NOT want them merged. The only thing I can think of is, if the member is thinking that they'll want a split stay at 7 months. In that case, maybe they'll make an entire 8 day reservation, or rather 2-4 day reservations at 11 months, planning to drop one reservation and book at a non-home resort at 7 months. Is that it? Because I did that at 11 months, only I made one entire 8 day reservation at 11 months, not 2 4 day reservations. Then, at 7 months, I did an on-line chat and told the CM what I wanted to do. A few minutes later, it was all done correctly. The only disadvantages were a few minutes of breath-holding until I saw that it was done correctly, and that they non-home resort was still available in those few minutes. And whatever would I have done if, as often happens, the chat hadn't been available? Is that why people make the two separate reservations? If not, please let me know-maybe there's a reason I should do it (make 2 reservations) also.

Also, be very careful when asking to merge reservations. Once, member services merge the night onto a reservation that I rented out and not for the reservation that I was in. (It was an AKV value room too so I couldn't get it back). Second, member services cancelled the night I asked to be merged. (The new reservation was for one less night). Luckily I was able to get the night back. This has been happening to me ever since we had to wait for the reservations to be merged. I haven't ask to merge reservations anymore. I book extra days and then cancel them. Luckily I have enough points to do that!

But yes, when I chose my original contract ages ago, I traveled about 4x a year to Disney and there was no good 1 UY. So when we go just after Memorial Day I'm crossing UYs for the first day or so. This time maybe 3 days. I don't know for sure. I am just glad I don't have multiple UYs because TBH this is complicated enough and with 5 different contracts and 3 homes

When they drop those days there is a risk you’ll be left without anywhere to stay. They don’t have the ability to hold the dates so they can’t be taken by someone else. And unless you have extra points you can use, they can’t just book the new dates first. Also MS opens an hour after everyone else can modify online, so you reduce your chances by waiting for MS to do it for you.

I am crossing UYs and to be honest until I solidify dates, I want flexibility to change dates and locations myself. Once I do that with flights, I'll ask MS to merge. But you cannot cross UYs online. They have to be 2 separate reservations. It's annoying but it is what it is.

Sounds like I was pretty lucky it all worked out then! I didn't make 2 reservations at 11 months because, at that time, I planned to stay at the resort I reserved at 11 months for my whole trip. But then, sometime between 11 and 7 months, I just got it in my head to do a split stay (Ive done lots of them over the years, but I just hadn't thought of it this time). Had I known I was risking losing my reservation, I probably would have just stayed where I was, and told myself that it was too late to try for a split stay, But next time, the making 2 reservations does make perfect sense, thanks for the explanation.

I haven't experienced this. Generally , a request has to be submitted to a supervisor to make the merge.
