Of all the D23 announcements, we seem to be most excited about Soarin getting to show the older version of its movie, for a limited time.
Oh well....on to the next D23, August 9-11 in Anaheim.
Brian, you are being tasked with having eyes on the ground and bring us in-person, live reporting.

I never thought about this before but I grew up in the 50s with Walt Disney World of Color and Tink was always the Best… More so than Mickey Mouse . And that is the highlight of seeing Tink at the end of the Soarin Over California… I see you Mickey waving but Tink is just as fantastic to see ! I'll take Tink over Mickey any day! Thank you for the D23 summary! Let's get moving on the Magic Kingdom expansion! I will get to try Soarin' Over California again this month. I did not really care for it the first time I saw it. Compared to World, that is. Both of them are great, but I prefer World. Since many others seem to prefer California, I am looking forward to giving California another chance. I think for those of us who saw the original Soarin' first, we realize the photo quality isn't up to snuff, but knowing how little CGI was done and how the scenes aren't bendy (leaning tower of Eiffel anyone?) that makes it superior. That and orange groves The problem with this is not so much the tech, I believe, as the choice of image. Choosing a tower is going to make parallax error pretty much impossible to avoid in such a wide theatre. Image choice was just poor in this example.
Cheers.

For me the tech with CGI makes it inferior. I like real films, not fake for something like this.

My wife is pretty afraid of the Soarin' ride itself, but she would go for the California movie - with the "World" movie we don't even bother. I love Soarin but I also had a problem with my fear of falling. (Not heights as such, but falling out - which is why I can ride Big Thunder and love it but not Slinky). On our last trip I had a brainwave and used the strap through the buckle. I felt a bit self conscious at first when I did it up but it made all the difference. I wasn’t gripping the arm rests in a desperate attempt not to slip. It was a game changer! Maybe Mrs Adelard would feel happier using the kiddie strap - just don’t call it that! Tim always reminds me to use the strap for “little aviators…” Smarty pants! I’m taller than that. But I sometimes forget and actually use the darned thing…

But even if they had a drone flying at the real Eiffel Tower there would likely be parallax from the sides. In addition to the CGI, which diminishes the experience, the choice of subject matter is inferior in this case, while others are veru good (Iguazu Falls, for example).
Cheers.

Was talking with my wife about Soarin' and she thinks that if we were seated in what becomes the bottom row after "takeoff" then she would be mostly fine. I figure that would be easy enough if you mentioned it to the person that is telling you where to stand when you get into the three lines outside to watch the safety video. Anybody tries this?

Oh, definitely. It is always possible to request a row. You're looking for Row 3. We have requested specific rows several times, and they have always accommodated.
One thing about Row 3 is that looking down sees a large drop to the floor of the well in front of the theatre. And it is far. The upper rows don't see it as clearly due to people in between.
Cheers.

Yes you can request. Most ask for the top row though. But as stated bottom gives you a better job of being able to see the "drop".

Well that makes me wonder which would be worse for her, because being in the lower row and seeing this deep drop, she might not like. But I think it's the initial "lifting" of the seats and she thinks she is going to slip out, I think she mentioned once we are up, she is pretty much okay.
I never give it any thought, I just get in and "weeee" One time I had flip-flops on and left them on the floor when we went up, and there they were when we came back down and I put my feet right back in them...I thought that was really cool for some reason. Ah, so easy to amuse!

Well thank you all for this! I’ve never looked down on Soarin, so I was unaware of the abyss. Now that I know it is there, I’ll have to request the front row to keep me from looking and freaking out…
