So when he does, it’s probably wise to pay attention. “As I’ve looked at our overall output, meaning the studio, it’s clear that the pandemic created a lot of challenges creatively for everybody, including for us,” Iger said last week during Disney’s earnings conference call. “I’ve always felt that quantity can be actually a negative when it comes to quality, and I think that’s exactly what happened, we lost some focus.” Iger followed his comments with a new mandate: Disney will be making fewer films. It’s a similar strategy to one Iger took when he first became Disney CEO in 2005. At the time, Disney’s animation and live-action studio divisions had struggled with a string of failed movies, including including “The Alamo,” and “Home on the Range” and “Pooh’s Heffalump Movie.” Iger’s solution then was to cut 650 studio jobs and slash its annual movie production output in half, releasing only about a dozen films each year. He also acquired Pixar, giving Disney an immediate infusion of quality movies and a brand of storytelling that rubbed off on Disney’s traditional animation studio. Iger appears to be re-running the playbook for 2024. After flooding Disney+ with movies and other new content for several years, Iger is strategically cutting back to accelerate free cash flow generation and profitability. Disney eliminated animation jobs in June — the first significant cuts in about a decade — as part of a larger round of job reductions. After releasing four Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in 2021 and three in 2022 and 2023, Disney will have just one in 2024 — “Deadpool 3.” There hasn’t been a Star Wars movie since 2019′s “The Rise of Skywalker.” As if we didn’t already know.

Did you see Bob Eiger yesterday on Good Morn America with Michael Strahan excitedly discussing the new Frozen 3 in 2024 and announcing a Frozen 4 …sometime in the Disney Calendar that is different than the entire rest of the World .

Really ? That’s all you have to talk about for Disney News?
( Full disclosure I did not actually watch the entire interview since I never watch TV but happened to find this online …)
Maybe , hopefully there was more to discuss .

Iger needs to go and they need a new media creative team. Disney needs to get back to its creativity and its roots in animation. I am so sick of Frozen! I am not going to Frozen 3 of 4 and I have cancelled Disney plus.

My granddaughter, who was a Frozen fanatic, doesn’t even want to watch Frozen anymore. She is in 4th grade, so I guess she has grown out of it. Even the Frozen fans have had enough of “Frozen” …LOL

I do agree that too much is being created, and maybe that leaves less time to really create consistent, quality content. The problem is Disney+ (and streaming in general). If you don’t constantly create content, you will lose subscribers. For a while there, Wall Street overly rewarded based on number of subscribers. That caused everyone just to push for subscribers at the cost of quality and profits. Now, you have several streaming engines saying that have to start focusing on profitability. But are there enough paying subscribers out there to make it profitable? I only pay $5.98 a month for Hulu + Disney+, well below the advertised rate. In fact, I was going to cancel as my 1-year promotion was over and the system offered me another 6 months at $5.98, so I took it. I will cancel in a heartbeat once it shifts back to full price.

There hasn’t been a Star Wars movie since 2019′s “The Rise of Skywalker.” Good. Then they can't fuck it up any more. There were 3 Star Wars movies. The last was released in 1983. The rest are just pap.

This is just my opinion, but I felt Rogue One was a pretty good. Actually, I agree. That one was really quite good. I was thinking more of the other six of the nine-set. Noe lived up to the originals, IMO. Rogue One, though, was very non-formula and really worked for me as well.

Not sure Frozen 3 (or 4) is the answer to the problem. They need creative talent. It is obvious they are lacking imagination right now. It is so hard to believe that Lassiter etc loss was that critical but I am starting to believe it was.
They need to secure some original thought and keep it mainstream.

I dropped D+ as well. Just wasn't worth it to me. i'd rather one good movie a year than 20 crappy things they throw on D+ that's not how to do it. same with doing sequels. One is usually maybe fine but 3 and 4? I'm still waiting on an apology for Toy Story 4  Disney content used to be good and rather original. Now it's not. |

It is so hard to believe that Lassiter etc loss was that critical but I am starting to believe it was. I think he was. He was so instrumental in much of the success of Pixar. Definitely a talented and creative guy. Too bad he was also a sexual predator and had to go. Sad waste of talent.

Now having said that - I would love to see a conclusion to the Toy Story series where Andy is married with his own children and he end up with all his toys back (maybe yard sale or something). I think that would close the series and it reminds me of the Kenny Loggins song "Return to the House at Pooh Corner." He initially wrote the song "house at Pooh corner" in high school as a farewell to childhood. Then after he got married and had his own kids he added the final verse (which always makes me cry). If not familiar with it he ends it where his stuffed Pooh Bear now belongs to his son who is holding the bear as he sleeps, Loggins kisses his son good night and the stuffed pooh bear whispers "Boy welcome Home" to him. I am crying as I type this as I love that song and feel it is so impactful and emotional. I listened to Loggins on an interview about how and why he wrote the song and then added the conclusion years later (hence return to pooh corner). In my opinion - What an awesome ending and closure something like that would be to the Toy Story franchise. |
