New idea came to us last night. Keep in mind we're running on my CP for this year and next year... Thinking it's still not cheap to fly 6 of us to Florida even getting one flight completely free. So we're going to try for ~Double~Companion~Pass~ :-) I've got the SW RR cards. Can refer my wife to both a business and a personal. 20K bonus for referring (each). Approved, check. She'll get 60K and 75K points, and qualify for CP on her account by around mid-Jan. I'll swap a kid to be my companion. She'll put a kid as her companion. We now fly our 6 to Disney for all of 2024 for only the cost of 4 tickets! Then for 2025 we've still got CP on her account. Around the end of 2025 she can refer me. This will put me 3 years out from having last applied, easily outside the "have not gotten a bonus for this card in the last 2 years" limit. We finagled our flights last night in preparation for this. It's a game changer. A regular Disney trip would cost us 6x flights at 22K pts, which makes our baseline trip around 132K pts. With companion, this comes down to 5x flights, or 110K points. A good savings, but not going to change the game. We canceled those and rebooked... At this point I'm only booking 3x flights! That is a mere 66K pts. Another is booked on my wife's account with some credit she has from the covid years, and 2 will be on companion passes. That reduces our cost from 110K to 66K, and our fall trip will be reduced similarly.  |

The Southwest companion passes are a really good strategy. Even better since both you and your wife have it. I rarely fly Southwest, so I've never gone for it. Maybe one day.

Robin and I already do this....We both currently have companion status. You are allowed three changes of your companion per year. Again, this helps spread the savings since not every trip has the "right" companion.

Next level stuff here... I was going to shoot for hitting my spend in our Feb statements so I don't hit it too early. You can't tell your first statement date online (but you can see your first payment due date and guess). So I called about the two new cards and got clarity on the statement dates... which will both be Jan 3. Given this - and I asked them again and again if I spend now these won't credit till Jan 3, and they assured me that's the case - I'm racking up the spend now (thanks DVC) and should have the second Companion Pass on Jan 3. This is perfect since our first flight of the year is in Feb. We'll see how this all works out; it's cutting so close!

Update -- this all worked out as expected! Jan 4 we saw the points queue up on our cards, Jan 5 they came over to our SW account, Jan 6 we had the Companion option enabled. The referral bonuses are queued up, and will come in when my statement closes. Says CP is good thru Dec/2025, so a full 2 years of companion, plus double-CP this year. That is, 2 of our family fly free anytime we both fly. Companion Pass is the best perk of any travel program. |

Companion Pass is the best perk of any travel program. It's certainly a good one, and works well for those who fly Southwest. Other programs have strong perks as well. Just a question of what one is looking for and travel patterns.
