Who/When/Where:
Who: Sue (65), DVC Member
Holli (59), friend & co-worker
Vickie (59), Holli’s best friend & college roommate
Dates: January 10 – 15, 2024
Resort: Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort
Experience: Very Experienced – 29th stay at Hilton Head
INTRODUCTION:
This is the third year in a row for us to enjoy a grand villa in Hilton Head leading up to the MLK weekend. I put in a request for one of the two renovated units but since there are only five grand villas at the resort, I realize it will depend on who is checking out on our arrival day. However, it doesn’t hurt to make the request. They’re also in the process of installing an elevator and corresponding walkway/deck in front of the 2nd floor villas in one of the 2 buildings with a renovated grand villa. Not sure I want to stay in a construction zone, and honestly don’t want the elevator added here. This will likely be the last grand villa trip, as Vickie’s stage 4 ovarian cancer is on the move again. She’ll hit the 5-year mark in September and the reality is, most people don’t reach that. She’s had so much working in her favor – young age, physically fit (not overweight), very active, assertive/aggressive regarding her medical care, and she’s done very well but eventually the cancer becomes resistant to all treatment options and that’s where she is right now. She still feels well but nobody knows how long that will last at this point. Of course, being as strong as she is, I hope she continues to defy the odds and if she’s well enough for a future trip we’ll make that happen. For now, whatever she wants to do this trip is fine with me and I’m sure is fine with Holli.
We had hoped to do Comedy Magic Cabaret on both of the previous trips but that didn’t happen (Covid closure 2 years ago and closed due to Kerry performing at the Magic Castle in Los Angeles last year). This year they’ll be open two nights during our trip, so we booked tickets for Saturday night. Holli has been once, and I’ve been a handful of times, but it will be the first time for Vickie. This is a great place – husband & wife team Kelly & Kerry own it. Kelly greets guests and runs the operation while Kerry is the headliner entertainer (comedy & magic). It’s a small venue, so all seats are great. He may get a little risqué, but it’s not a dirty comedy show at all – he doesn’t need to stoop to that level. His magic is amazing, too.
The last two trips we did Pool Guy Mike’s island tours – north the first year and south last year. I’m glad we did those, as I hear he retired this past Thanksgiving. We also did a dolphin tour last year, so no need to repeat that unless we get some unusually warm weather during the trip. Pool Guy Mike had pointed out a number of places to walk/hike on the island and I wish I’d taken notes! I hadn’t counted on him retiring – figured he’d be there to ask in person this year. I did do some research online and we have a few spots identified, so we’ll likely spend our days enjoying nature/scenery outdoors if it’s not raining. At 10 days prior to the trip the weather forecast was calling for rain showers every damn day! Thankfully that got better and presently it looks like Friday will be a washout (rain all day) but the other days should be good. I also want to check out the sculpture trail (not sure of the exact name) over at Shelter Cove. We missed that last year, which is the first year it existed. If the wind and cold isn’t too bad we can also walk the beach, although that’s not much fun if umbrellas are needed.
We enjoy dining out for happy hour, specifically the restaurants in the Serg group. They’re just consistently excellent. My (and our) tradition for the first night has always been Poseidon, enjoying the Nauti Bar. I love their pimento cheese & naan bread! Holli swears the oysters she gets there are the best anywhere. I wouldn’t mind going there to start and end the trip, but we’ll see what the others want to do. Wise Guys is definitely on the itinerary – most likely Thursday or Friday night happy hour. That’s such a great place! Also, Frankie Bones is fabulous, and we love the bar area. Since they do lunch all afternoon, we can do it early or late – doesn’t matter. That could be our spot on Saturday, then we can just snack at Comedy Magic Cabaret. Black Marlin is a place I’ve been to frequently, Holli once but not sure Vickie’s ever been. Maybe we can fit that in, although it’s looking more likely that we’ll do another meal at Poseidon instead. Last trip we were very pleasantly surprised by Top Dawg Tavern across the water in Shelter Cove Harbor. That’s not part of the Serg group but definitely worth a visit! The tradition on getaway day is Hilton Head Diner, which is also not part of the Serg group.
As for amusing ourselves when we’re not eating or out walking, we’ll enjoy some of the sporting activities at the resort (bocce, horseshoes, mini golf, etc) when it’s not raining and enjoy the fireplace in our villa. I’m bringing several puzzles and the LED lamp I bought specifically so we could see the puzzles better (on the dining room table – worked great last year) since the Disney lighting is not very bright. A couple weeks before the trip I bought the Monopoly World Traveler edition as a birthday gift for grandson Ari and when telling Holli about it we agreed it would be fun for our trip. That night I went back to the store and bought another one to bring to Hilton Head. We’ll see how it compares to regular Monopoly – it sounds like instead of Atlantic City locations it’s world locations and when you land on one you have to complete some tasks related to that location. It could be fun, and if it sucks Ari will never see his game – it’ll go to Goodwill! Vickie will probably bring some games, and we’re all bringing wine!
We’ll pick up the cheeses, charcuterie stuff and any other groceries from Kroger the day we arrive. They (Holli & Vickie) always insist on picking up the cost of any meals, groceries, etc since I provide the lodging, so in the weeks prior to the trip as I’d see something we (or they) might like I’ve been buying it to bring with me – crackers, chocolate cashews, mission figs, fancy mustard to go with soft pretzel bits I’m bringing, crunchy snack mix, etc. Vickie still needs her naptime in the afternoon, which works just fine for everyone. I enjoy a bit of “down time” and on the weekdays that will let me catch General Hospital. When Vickie wakes up, then it’s typically time for happy hour dinner (unless we did lunch out – then it’s happy hour in the villa).
The plans so far are:
Wednesday 1/10: Drive to HHI, Kroger, Poseidon
Thursday 1/11: Nature walk, Wise Guys for happy hour
Friday 1/12: Rainy day, Poseidon lunch?
Saturday 1/13: Nature walk, Frankie Bones lunch, Comedy Magic Cabaret
Sunday 1/14: Brunch somewhere, nature walk, happy hour (Poseidon?)
Monday 1/15: Hilton Head Diner, Drive to Gainesville

Sue, have a great time! Was just there for Thanksgiving, the construction is everywhere and does make for some challenges with parking!

DAY 1 – Wednesday 1/10/24 Who: Sue (65), DVC Member Holli (59), friend & co-worker Vickie (59), Holli’s best friend & college roommate Plan: Drive to HHI, Kroger, Poseidon
Actual: Yesterday the storm (Finn) passed through and today promises to be a beautiful (but chilly) day. Thank goodness we weren’t planning to arrive yesterday, as the drive would have been awful. Here in Gainesville our area was fine but several staff at our sister facility in Marianna (in the panhandle of FL) had their homes destroyed in the storm.
This morning Holli & I both worked until 10. It may seem odd to go in for only a couple hours but that’s called “minimizing the vacation time being used – to stretch it as far as possible”, lol. I’d loaded my stuff in the car before going into the office, so all I had to do at 10 was pack the cooler and pick up Holli (a few houses down the street).
I was backing out of my driveway at 10:04 and leaving Holli’s house by 10:14. Everything fit perfectly in the trunk, but it was full! The drive was easy, and we pulled into the resort by 2:09. To my surprise the grand villa was already ready! That has never happened before! My joy was short-lived when I learned we are in the same villa as last year. Currently two of the grand villas are renovated, one is in the process of being renovated and two have not been touched yet (16 & 18). Of those two, 18 has the marsh view and internet there was fine. Last year we were in 16 and the internet was horrible. So where are we this trip? Building 16.
We got checked in and drove over to the building. Parking is also a pain here, but this time of year at least finding a space shouldn’t be a big problem. We got everything moved into the villa and took pictures, then I tried to connect to the internet. Right off the bat it said I was connected (the in-room internet) but couldn’t open any browser – the wheel just spun and spun and spun. I disconnected and tried to reconnect but got a message saying it wouldn’t connect. ARGH! I decided to try the other option (resort) and that one worked, with a stronger signal AND it let me open browsers right off the bat. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this would work.
In the meantime, I’m somewhat disappointed we didn’t get a renovated villa, but rather than focusing on what I don’t have, instead I’ll be thankful for one last chance to experience the old décor <g>. It’s still a great place! Holli & I unpacked our stuff and Vickie said she’d be arriving around 4. We agreed for her to meet us at Poseidon – Holli & I will walk over, then we can hit Kroger after dinner and ride back in Vickie’s car.
Firewood is provided to the grand villa (no charge) and the bin wasn’t quite full, so Holli & I brought the wood inside and called to request more be delivered. It’ll come while we’re out, so we never have to wait on a delivery to start a fire. Once that was done it was nearly 3:30 so Holli & I walked over to Poseidon. Happy Hour starts at 4, so our timing should be good.
We got to Poseidon’s just before 4 and checked out the park nearby to see where the sculpture trail was located since that is on the planned activities list. We then got a table inside the Nauti Bar, which wasn’t crowded at all. They had the plastic flaps down, but it was still a little cool as some breeze still got through. Just as we were sitting down Vickie pulled up and spotted us inside.
It's great seeing her again – she looks fabulous and is currently feeling good (for the most part – it’s impossible not to have some issues). We ordered wine since happy hour had just started and began catching up on some of the gossip since last year. For “dinner” we each ordered from the happy hour bar menu – pimento cheese w/naan bread for me, oysters for Holli and the jumbo pretzel for Vickie. Poseidon’s is doing $1 Virginia oysters during happy hour all month, and Holli had loved these in previous years. She enjoyed them again tonight. My pimento cheese was great – I ate what I could, Holli ate some, and I took the rest “to go”. Vickie enjoyed her pretzel.
After dinner we made a quick stop at Kroger to pick up cheeses, another box of crackers (I had brought 4 types) & bagels since Holli had forgotten to bring hers. Vickie had her basic breakfast stuff in the car, and I’d brought a few eggs and bacon slices for myself. Vickie’s husband Gary had made us a loaf of banana bread, so we had that as well.
Driving back to the resort the sunset sky was beautiful! We got Vickie’s stuff moved up to the villa and settled in for the evening. The trip will be mainly checking out the various hiking/nature trails, going out to eat, and enjoying evenings with a fire in the villa.
The resort had delivered another full basket of firewood. New this year is an ash bucket outside next to the firewood basket. In the past the ashes just magically disappeared, so perhaps this is a hint that we can do some of that, lol. Vickie built a fire (she brought her own fire starter kit). She noticed the Firestarter kit up on the mantle looked it had some of the stuff she left here a year ago, lol! The fire smelled and looked (and felt) great!
It felt cool in the villa, so I found the thermostat and discovered it was set on air conditioning and it was 65 degrees. I managed to change it to heat and bumped it up to 68, which took care of that problem! We spent the evening sitting around the living room drinking wine and conversing. Vickie has some aches and pains related to her cancer and treatment, so she used one of her massaging heating pads on the love seat, which is her corner of the room. Does anyone know if there’s still a loveseat next to the tv in the renovated villas? We saw a You Tube video, but it didn’t hit that corner.
Today was a great start to the trip. We’re all so happy to be here, and not getting a renovated grand villa isn’t a problem at all. Poseidon was terrific and I could eat there pretty much every day. Tomorrow we’ll go explore some trails somewhere and plan to do happy hour at Wise Guys. That place is always outstanding, so we’re looking forward to it!

DAY 2 – Thursday 1/11/24 Who: Sue (65), DVC Member Holli (59), friend & co-worker Vickie (59), Holli’s best friend & college roommate Plan: Nature walk, Wise Guys for happy hour
Actual: Last night Vickie turned in around 8, which is her normal bedtime these days. She & Holli plan to do a yoga online thing at 8:45 and Vickie is normally ready to head out around 10 so that’s when we plan to start the day. Before then it’ll just be puttering around the villa. Holli & I stayed up talking for a while. My plans for January 2025 are trying for Jambo House club level for this long weekend and I’m going to keep those plans but also book a grand villa here. Depending on how Vickie is doing I have until November 2024 to cancel the reservation I won’t need and not be penalized on the dvc points. I hope we can do Hilton Head, but it’s probably a long shot. Quite often people dealing with cancer present a more positive scenario than what reality is, and Holli & I agreed that could be the case with Vickie. How she feels right now and how she looks really doesn’t necessarily match what’s going in within her body. So, all we can do is hope for the best and cross our fingers to have a fourth trip.
Holli & I each turned in somewhere after 9. I touched base with SB, did some online stuff, watched the start of the Savannah local news and it was lights out around 10:15. I slept well, waking up a few times and finally getting up for good at 5:30. I made my cappuccino in the hot pot I’d brought (leaving the coffee maker for the others since they drink coffee) and took it back to bed.
The weather is looking better for tomorrow now. Rather than rain all day and all night, it should start around lunch time and end in the early evening. The severe weather is expected to be an even shorter period, around 4pm. Assuming this type of weather forecast remains, we can hopefully get some outdoor time and be at lunch when the rain starts.
Around 7:30 I went out to the living room and found Holli eating her breakfast. I cooked my egg and microwaved my slice of bacon and joined her on the sofa. Eventually Vickie came down to get some coffee and a breakfast biscuit, taking both back up to her room for breakfast in bed. Holli & I each had some of Gary’s banana walnut cranberry bread, that was quite good. I’m still partial to just bananas and nuts, though.
Just before 8:45 Holli went upstairs where she & Vickie did a yoga class (online) on the carpeted hallway floor. The living room no longer has the big area rug and since Holli doesn’t have a yoga mat here the carpet is probably a better choice than the living room floor. I used this time to go take my shower & get dressed for the day.
When I came out, they were still doing yoga up on the loft. I had no idea yoga was a long thing – it lasted just over an hour. While they took their showers, I went out to walk around the resort. I checked on the progress of the elevator at building 28 and it will still look nice once it’s done. I stopped in the Mercantile and found the Hanukkah Loungefly on sale. The cast member showed me how the lights in the menorah actually light up. I ended up buying it for next year’s holiday gift for a Jewish co-worker.
Holli & Vickie were working on the puzzle I’d started earlier, so I joined them for a little while before we headed out. Our destination was Jarvis Park, and first we missed it, then were given weird directions that took us away from it only to loop around and come back, but eventually we got there. We’d been here once before on Pool Guy Mike’s tour, but we didn’t have time to walk the trail then.
It was a bit chilly, but it wasn’t windy, so it felt pretty good. The trail is paved and only 1.1 miles, so it was a very easy walk. We saw lots of birds (I’m not a bird person so have no clue what types) and it was a pretty setting. We didn’t see any alligators today – I assume they’re staying in the water.
When we left here, we tried to find an old cemetery we’d seen on one of Mike’s tours. I thought I knew where it might be but it turned out I was thinking of the Gullah Museum, which has a big yard but no gravestones. We continued driving around and found the Zion cemetery, which had old graves back to the 1800’s from the Revolutionary War. It was interesting seeing the gravestones with the story of the person. One family had at least 5-6 of their children buried, who ranged in age from infant to 11 years old when they died. It wasn’t a mass death either – they all died in different years!
From there we went to TJ Maxx for Holli to buy socks and then we walked over to Whole Foods. Holli needed distilled water for her CPAP machine. She & Holli also got a cup of soup for lunch, while I stuck with half of my leftover pimento cheese from last night. We were back in the villa by 1pm. After lunch Vickie went upstairs for her nap, Holli resumed the puzzle, and I updated the report quickly before joining Holli at the puzzle. At 2pm I turned General Hospital on to catch part of that.
Holli & I got a lot done on the 1000-piece puzzle. It may get finished tonight! Vickie was up by 3:30 and joined us at the puzzle table after pouring some wine for everyone. When the trash guy came by, we told him he couldn’t leave until he placed 3 pieces in the puzzle. He laughed and said he was lousy at that stuff. We continued working on it until we noticed it was after 4.
Wise Guys opens at 4:30 so we left around 4:15 or so and arrived right at 4:30. This is such a pretty venue, and the food is excellent. We were greeted at the door and the hostess explained the happy hour (at the bar and at the high-top tables). The bar is beautiful, but we opted for the same high-top table we had last year. Service was impeccable and although we were the first to arrive by the time, we left an hour or so later the place was packed.
We each ordered a glass of wine, and their house sauvignon blanc is Nobilo, which is what I’ve been drinking at the villa. I haven’t seen that one in any other restaurants – except on HAL ships for a while. For food Vickie & I got the French onion soup and Holli had the short rib sliders. Everything was outstanding – Holli gets those sliders every time and loves them. Vickie got the soup last year and really loved it, and I’m glad I got it this year. I’d definitely get it again.
On the way back to the villa the sky was really pretty. The sun had set but the sky was still pretty colors. We thought maybe we’d catch the end of it from the end of the resort, but once we got out there, we realized we’d pretty much missed it. With rain expected tomorrow night, we can try again Saturday.
We went back to the villa, and I brought the firewood inside & stacked it up on the hearth. We changed into jammies, they poured some wine (Nobilo), and we finished the puzzle! We were shocked we did a whole 1000-piece puzzle in one day. One odd thing – we had 2 of one piece and once we finished saw we were missing a piece. How does that happen? The pieces were all sealed in a plastic bag inside the box, which was also sealed.
It was almost 8 when the puzzle was finished. I poured myself some wine and we moved into the living room. Vickie made another great fire – it smells so good in here! She’d been working on a slide show of photos to be played at her funeral service and showed that to us. It included a photo of the 3 of us on the dolphin cruise last year and she’s adding another of us from the trail this morning. She’s putting it together to ensure it’s all pictures that she looks good in, rather than leaving it to her husband to do after she’s gone <g>. I’d say that’s a wise move!
At this point we’re in for the night, enjoying a relaxing evening of good company around the fire. Today was a great day – weather wasn’t bad, exploring the island and walking the trail was very nice, and of course Wise Guys was terrific. Tomorrow rain is still expected, but not much before noon. We’ll go over to Shelter Cove and walk the sculpture trail and then go inside for lunch at Poseidon. The rest of the day will likely be indoors due to the rain – but that’s ok.

We checked out of building 12 this morning. We were at HH from Sunday through Thursday. Our WiFi was good until last evening. IT was called - it may have been storm related.

DAY 3 – Friday 1/12/24 Who: Sue (65), DVC Member Holli (59), friend & co-worker Vickie (59), Holli’s best friend & college roommate
Plan: Rainy day, Poseidon lunch
Actual: Last night Vickie didn’t turn in until around 9:30, which is late for her. Holli headed upstairs around 10 and I went to my bedroom off the living room about 15 minutes later. The fire was down to just embers at that point.
I slept well again and got up at 5:30 to make my cappuccino. I love that it’s so quiet here! A little after 7 I went out to the living room, cooked my egg & slice of bacon and had breakfast on the sofa. Holli was up sometime after 8 and had her breakfast. Vickie slept later than usual, but that’s not surprising since she was up later last night.
The weather is looking even better now, with the storms not expected until around 1pm. It also looks like by late afternoon it’ll be just intermittent or occasional showers. Tomorrow we’ll be back to having sunshine, although it’s supposed to be breezy. The temp today could hit close to 70, which is warm for January!
I took apart the finished puzzle so later we could start the other 1000-piece one. Holli went upstairs to shower, and I went to my room to get ready for the day. When I came back out, I opened up the next puzzle. Vickie came down and we chatted a bit, then while she was getting ready Holli & I worked on getting the new puzzle started (pulling out the border). Once Vickie was ready it was just after 10 and we headed out the door. I called for more firewood to be delivered.
We drove over to Shelter Cove and parked outside Poseidon. The sun had been shining through the clouds off an on, and the weather was so much better than originally forecast. It was nice enough that I decided to leave my umbrella in the car, and it turns out I never needed it. We walked on the boardwalk along the marsh and then when we hit the end we turned around and walked back a little more inland. The condos or apartments that were built here look very nice. Everyone we passed on the trail was very friendly. There were viewing areas to look at the marsh, benches along the way, and it was just very nice.
At this point we were at sculpture #14 and worked our way down. The Veterans Memorial Park was along the way, and it was very well done. It’s a tribute to the armed services and had a list of names of what I assume were local people (or South Carolina) who died during their service. The sculptures were pretty interesting – most were very well done, too. We only made it down to number 8 when we couldn’t find any more. I read online that starting in the next day or 2 they were doing some work in this area to add more pedestrian paths I wouldn’t think they’d remove 7 giant sculptures to do so! But, it gives us something to look for on a future trip – hopefully we’ll have that chance.
We turned around and walked back towards Poseidon (we’d continued past Belk seeking sculptures 1-7) and decided to do some shopping before lunch. We browsed in several of the smaller shops but then went to Belk and scored some great deals! I had wanted to get a second Christmas shirt and found one on sale for 70% off (around $10). Holli also got one, and then I found Christmas pajamas with her dog’s breed all over the pants, with a bigger image on the front of the shirt. She loved them, found her size, and bought them too (for 75% off).
We walked back to the car, stored our purchases in the trunk, and went inside Poseidon. It wasn’t very busy, and we chose to sit outside on the restaurant side of the Nauti Bar. They turned the space heaters on for us and it was very comfortable out there. Holli & Vickie were both impressed with the lunch menu here.
Holli & I had a glass of wine, while Vickie had diet coke. Decades ago on my first visit here I’d gotten the Poseidon beef sliders, with caramelized onions and they were fabulous! That’s what I’d been looking forward to for today. I know there was a risk they wouldn’t live up to my memory since it was so long ago, but they turned out to be every bit as wonderful as I remembered! The portion is two small sliders, and that’s plenty! The beef was delicious and caramelized onions will help anything taste better, lol! I didn’t realize they came with fries or chips too and went with the fries (also excellent) but barely ate half of those.
Holli & Vickie both got a lunch combo. Holli had the half Rueben and Baja salad. Vickie had the half Rueben and a bowl of the seafood bisque (shrimp & lobster). They both raved about all their food – this was a big hit. I really believe I could spend my entire vacations eating nowhere but Poseidon and would love every meal.
After settling the check (with the Disney 10% discount) we browsed through the shops on this side of the road and found more things we had to have. I got a couple shirts (one polo, one t-shirt) for SB, Vickie found a shirt for herself, and Holli got a Poseidon stemless wine glass. In another store Holli got a potholder with a picture of her dog’s face. In yet another store Vickie found a bracelet she loved and bought that. I never shop when I come to Hilton Head in May, partly because it’s not something SB enjoys but mainly because the focus is the beach. I enjoy it though on our January girls’ trips.
By now it was after 1pm so we went back to the car and returned to the villa. The bin outside was full of new firewood. We still have enough inside to get the fire going for a while tonight, and then will bring some of the new stuff in. Vickie went upstairs to lay down – she mainly uses one of her heating pads and relaxes but sometimes falls asleep. She said earlier that since she’s been here, she’s felt better physically, which is a good thing. Cancer is hard when it gets to that point, so any good day is something to celebrate. Holli poured a glass of wine and looked at some of the other Serg menus. Just before General Hospital started, she headed upstairs to her room for a bit. The two of them are planning on doing yoga again up in the loft, using a You Tube video. Holli swears it really helped her. I stayed on the sofa watching GH and updating the report.
Holli was back downstairs by 2:30 so I moved over to the table and worked on the puzzle with her. When Vickie came back down she did the same and we spent the afternoon working on the puzzle. It did rain at some point but I only knew because the rocking chairs on my balcony were wet. Around 5 Holli started fixing charcuterie for dinner, including making candied bacon. We worked on the puzzle while the bacon was in the oven, and we just might finish this one today!
Eventually we moved into the living room and Vickie made another beautiful fire. We set the bacon & cheese/charcuterie board on the coffee table and spent another relaxing evening with fire, wine, conversation & snacks. You can’t beat this! We had some candid conversation with Vickie regarding her situation, plans, wishes, etc. She’s fully expecting next week’s PET scan to show further spread and she’ll be going to Cleveland Clinic for a second opinion on her current prognosis once those results are in. Eventually we moved back to the puzzle table (around 8) and a little bit later Vickie headed up to bed. Holli & I continued working on it until 9 when she went up to her room. I finished it up at 9:14 and then headed to my room to wrap up the report and do a little online stuff before turning in.
Today was another wonderful day and we really got lucky with the weather! Lunch at Poseidon was a big hit with everyone. I wish we had many more years to keep doing this. Tomorrow we’ll walk more trails, do lunch at Frankie Bones, possibly catch the sunset and end the day with a great show at Comedy Magic Cabaret.

DAY 4 – Saturday 1/13/24 Who: Sue (65), DVC Member Holli (59), friend & co-worker Vickie (59), Holli’s best friend & college roommate Plan: Nature walk, Frankie Bones lunch, Comedy Magic Cabaret
Actual: Everyone slept well again last night. I was up at 5:30 with my cappuccino and watched a couple HAL ships sail into Port Everglades. Around 7 or so I went out to the living room and made my breakfast, eating it on the sofa again. Holli came down and made her breakfast, and Vickie was up just after 8. We did our online stuff and decided to switch up the plans a bit today.
They wanted to do yoga again (shorter version) and then go to the hot tub. Neither of those are my things, so it’ll be a good chance for them to have time with just the 2 of them (not that they’d mind it being all 3 of us for everything). I figured I’d go for a walk through Shelter Cove Harbour while they were at the hot tub. I went in to take my shower & get dressed.
When I came out they were upstairs on the loft area doing yoga. I took apart the jigsaw puzzle and then noticed the trash had been emptied in the kitchen. The recyclable trash was gone too. However, the coffee hadn’t been replenished, so I didn’t know what was going on. Today is our “trash & towel” service and I do want it. After yoga they changed into swimsuits (with pants and coats) and went to the pool area to soak in the hot tub. I finished updating the report, changed into my sneakers and headed out for a walk.
As I stepped off the bottom step, I saw Holli & Vickie walking back to the villa! I asked what happened and learned there was too much chlorine in the hot tub, so they drained it. The cast member said it may be up at 2pm. I stopped at the front desk to let them know I still want trash & towel service and requested it be after 11 (when we’d be out). The cast member checked in the computer and our villa had not been marked as being done, so they will definitely be back.
I headed across the bridge and made a brisk and very windy walk to the end by Ela’s restaurant before turning around to walk back along the shops. The bigger shops were open, with their long sleeve shirts and sweatshirts on sale racks outside each store. The gourmet shop Holli likes opens at noon today and is closed tomorrow. San Miguel’s and the bakery are both closed temporarily (off season). Several other people were out walking, and there seemed to be more larger boats than usual (yachts) in the marina.
When I returned to the villa Holli was in the living room and Vickie was upstairs taking her shower. She came down around 10:30 and we got ready to head out for our next adventure. Our next set of trails was the Audubon Newhall Preserve. We found this one easily enough, without having to make any u-turns. The parking lot is tiny, with room for maybe 10-12 vehicles, so I can’t imagine trying to go here during the busy summer season. As it was, the lot was more than half full today.
I had a small map which came in handy. The trails were well marked, but the map gave us the perspective to choose wisely between this way or that way. Many of the trees were identified via signs on the ground, and the trail itself was pretty smooth and easy to walk on. The trees and plant life were such a vibrant green! Walking was mostly single file, as the trails were not wide, and they were dirt covered with pine needles (not paved).
We covered the entire area, including around the pond. On the map it looked like it might have been a bigger area than it actually was – we did it all easily. There were signs informing that alligators were here but being rather chilly out we didn’t see any. It was a nice little morning activity.
By the time we got back to the parking lot it was time to head for lunch – Vickie especially was hungry. The leanest, fittest of the group, she has the biggest appetite (and best metabolism)! We drove to Frankie Bones, arriving right around noon. We were seated immediately, in a booth in the regular part of the restaurant. Normally we sit in the bar area, so this was a nice change.
The menu and food here are terrific – you really can’t go wrong with anything and even I (very much a picky eater who tends to repeat the same item at each place) have had several different menu items over the years. Today we all went with the lunch combo meals – the 2-way for Holli & I and 3-way for Vickie. Mine was a half BLT with cole slaw, Holli’s was half chicken parm sandwich & Caesar salad, and Vickie had the half tuna salad sandwich, cole slaw & cup of soup. Everything was excellent – lots of bacon & tomato in my BLT, Holli’s chicken parm was huge (thick piece of chicken) and overall, it was another winner of a meal. Holli & I each had a glass of wine, while Vickie enjoyed diet coke. Dessert wasn’t even considered, and after the Disney 10% discount was applied, we settled the check and headed out. The restaurant and bar were full by now, with people waiting for a table. Isn’t this the extreme off season??? Just goes to show how good this place is.
We drove back to the resort and the trash & towel service hadn’t been completed yet. Vickie was heading upstairs to lay down with a heating pad for about an hour so I told her to put any old towels and her trash can out by the stairs so she wouldn’t be disturbed if them came during this time. Holli & I hung out in the living room, and I updated the report.
When Vickie came back down, we walked over to Shelter Cove Harbour to browse through the shops that were open. They made minor purchases – Vickie a handmade bar of soap and Holli one of her favorite bottles of wine. Nothing really called out to me today. On our way back we stopped in Big Murgie’s Den for the cookies, and I remembered they’re nothing special and not really worth the calories. They each had an oatmeal raisin, and I had a chocolate chip w/candy pieces.
Back in the villa we opened the Monopoly world traveler edition game. It’s similar to regular monopoly, but there’s no such thing as bankrupt (it says pay what you can – seriously!) and the winner is the first person to hit four (4) of their travel goals. That was me today, and it keeps the game shorter than the original, which is a good thing. There are no houses and hotels – you simply buy a property and when someone lands on it they pay you the “tour fee” unless it happens to be one of their travel goals. Holli shared her new bottle of wine with Vickie, and I poured some of my white wine in the fridge (Stonehaven sauvignon blanc). We also watched HAL’s Eurodam sail away as we played.
We finished up just before 5 and put the game away. Vickie went upstairs to call her husband and I called SB. We reconvened in the living room to relax until it was time to leave for the Comedy Magic Cabaret. Just after 7 we left for the show and arrived a few minutes before the doors opened at 7:15. We were seated in one of the raised booths, which is what Holli had booked. This venue is small, with 2 rows on the floor, a row of raised booths, and then barstools at a counter as the top/4th row. No seat is bad, since the venue is so intimate.
We ordered wine to drink and for snacks the hot pretzel and the spinach/artichoke dip with tortilla chips. Everything was very good. Some short video clips played just before the show, including a really funny one poking fun at millennials. It was true, and although we thought it was hysterical the few millennials near us were stone-faced. That made it even funnier to us, lol.
Right at 8 Kerry came out to do his show and right off the bat the laughter was loud & steady. He improvises a lot based on who in the audience he’s picking on and it’s all done within the framework of whatever “trick” he’s doing. He performs for almost 2.5 hours without a break, and it’s just so much fun from start to finish! For one trick he brought a lady up from the audience, and then for another he got 2 guys from the audience. All of them were great sports and did terrific. Vickie really enjoyed this so I’m glad she was finally able to see it on our third attempt!
As we were getting ready to leave the lady who’d helped on stage came over to introduce herself as a trip report reader – what a small world! It was nice meeting Julie, and I’m pretty sure she enjoyed the show as much as we did! We headed back to the villa and went to our respective bedrooms immediately. I finished up the report as quickly as I could (by 11) and hope to turn the lights out before much longer.
Today was another wonderful day – we’re all just loving being here. The morning trail and lunch at Frankie Bones was great. The show tonight was outstanding, as always. Tomorrow we’re planning on brunch, shopping at Coligny and then happy hour before coming back for one last evening by the fireplace.

I always enjoy your trip reports from HHI. What did you have at Poseidon? We've always had a good meal there. Enjoy Hilton Head Diner, home of the challah bread French Toast-I think it was you who loved it and got me to try it and enjoy it. Is the elevator in building 28 only going to the second floor for access to a HA villa, or will the same elevator increase "elevator access" to the first floor studio and 1 BR? Thinking of Vickie, and hoping for a good outcome for her health.

I had the Poseidon beef sliders for lunch - they were great. During happy hour I always get the pimento cheese. Not sure if the elevator will be stopping on the first floor or if it's just second floor.
DAY 5 – Sunday 1/14/24 Who: Sue (65), DVC Member Holli (59), friend & co-worker Vickie (59), Holli’s best friend & college roommate Plan: Brunch somewhere, nature walk, happy hour (Poseidon?)
Actual: After such a fun night I slept well again – the others must have too, as they were up later than usual <g>. I knew two HAL ships were sailing in this morning (including Rotterdam which Holli, Fran & I will be on in 53 days) so I was up by 5. I made my cappuccino, brought it back to bed, and watched both ships arrive while doing my usual online stuff. Around 7:30 I got up to shower & dress, coming out to the living room at 8:15 to find I was the only one up.
Today is our last full day, which is really sad. It also means packing, which is a pain. I figured we’d be busy more of the day than usual, so I got the last puzzle started. This one is only 500 pieces so we should be able to complete it today.
The others came down just after 8:30. Holli made coffee and sat on the sofa reading her book. Vickie got a cup of coffee and went back up to her room to relax with a heating pad for a while. That seems to help manage her pain/discomfort. Eventually Holli went up for her shower and we were all ready to head out the door a little after 10.
We walked over to Top Dawg Tavern and were among the first few tables to arrive. We were given a big booth inside and had a nice brunch/lunch. Vickie got bloody mary mix without the alcohol while Holli & I stuck with water. For meals Holli had the breakfast sandwich (came with breakfast potatoes and warm cinnamon apples), Vickie the breakfast tacos (also came with breakfast potatoes) and I had the appetizer filet mignon bites (atop mashed potatoes w/horseradish sauce on the side) from the regular menu. Everything was excellent – they raved about the breakfast potatoes especially. Mine was a smaller portion than last year, but that’s a good thing since I was able to eat most of it.
From there we walked back to the resort and walked to the end. The others saw the construction at building 28 and agreed it doesn’t look bad and it’ll be nice to have an elevator there. We cut through the pool to confirm that the hot tub was operational, as they plan to go there later. After that we went up to our villa and found the housekeeper doing the trash service. I changed from my boots into sneakers and left my jacket behind – the sweatshirt I was wearing would be enough. We then went to the car and drove down to Coligny.
As usual we park by Piggly Wiggly because that’s where we’ll end. Holli was looking for a couple specific stores, Vickie had one in mind as well and the fudge store always calls my name. Once again, we all found some treasures so we consider it a successful shopping trip. At the fudge store we each had a small sample – it’s so delicious here! None of us wanted to buy a slab of fudge but I got 2 small bags of their foil-wrapped Christmas milk chocolate candies (BOGO). Since there’s just for me to enjoy, it doesn’t matter that they’re Christmas-themed. I also got some different fish seasoning from a local vendor (SB eats fish).
Coming back to Piggly Wiggly we put our bags in the car and headed inside to look at the local section. Holli bought a couple pre-packaged cobbler mixes that you just add water (maybe something else too) and bake. She’d liked the one she bought last year and wanted more. Vickie may have got one too.
We drove back to the resort and relaxed in the villa. Wine was poured and we finished the jigsaw puzzle by 2pm. Vickie went upstairs to spend a little time with the heating pad up there (she keeps another in the living room but it’s different) while Holli read her book and I did online stuff. They’re doing yoga online at 3 up in their “studio” – the loft area above the living room, lol. After that they’ll hit the hot tub and then after that we’ll see if we still want to head to Black Marlin for happy hour or just stay home.
While they do yoga and hot tub, I’ll watch the Rotterdam sail (scheduled at 3:45 but could be later) and pack up what I can. Around 2:45 I decided to drive over to Kroger to fill the gas tank and while there check out the small pieces of cheese in case there’s something I want to bring home.
Parking is so tight here at the resort, and although it’s the off season, the construction has caused some spaces to be unavailable. You’d think it would balance out since some buildings are unavailable, but I’ve never seen it this bad in January. I had some jumbo SUV parked next to me so I could not back up and turn towards the exit. Instead, I had to drive through the entire resort to turn around at the circle at the end – the only empty space along the way was not one where I could have pulled in and backed out to go the direction I wanted.
At Kroger I got my gas then went into the grocery store and found three small cheeses. I paid for those and headed back to the resort. Once inside my plan was to watch the ships sail but the internet was not working right – it kept dropping constantly. It’s been better than last year, but this is still not acceptable. In 2024 reliable internet should not be a luxury or “good luck”.
I started watching from my phone but then the internet came back for good right at 3:45. Ft Lauderdale was foggy, misty and somewhat cold – not a great sailaway for all those people. The ship didn’t start backing up until just after 4, so I didn’t miss anything. Holli & Vickie’s yoga ended at 4 so they changed into swimsuits (under warm clothes), poured wine in a paper coffee cup, and headed to the hot tub for a little while. I don’t want any part of chlorine water and then having to get out into the cooler air!
The damn internet went out again just as the ship was moving into the channel, so I gave up! I pulled it up on my phone instead and watched Rotterdam sail away. With this sort of aggravation, it makes me look forward to going home. Perhaps later it will be more reliable, but this continued the whole time they were at the hot tub. I gave up and played a downloaded game on my tablet. They got back a little after 5 and we decided to just stay in tonight. We’ve got plenty of cheese & crackers left, plus we don’t know how crowded happy hour would be this late into it. They said the hot tub was nice, but then kids were headed in so that clearly is the time to leave! Too bad they didn’t have a family hot tub and an adult one, although I’m sure the kids would take them both, and their parents would let them.
Holli cut up a bunch of the cheeses and then we walked to the pier to catch sunset. The sky was a pretty color but unfortunately without any clouds it wasn’t going to be dramatic. We stayed out there a while taking pictures and eventually realized it wasn’t going to get significantly better and headed back to the villa by 6.
Holli made some more candied bacon, and we settled in for the night. The internet is back up but who knows for how long. Vickie started a fire and then she & Holli took some stuff down to the cars while the bacon was in the oven. The bacon turned out great again – just as good as Pinnacle Grill on the HAL ships!
We had a delightful last evening chatting around the fire while enjoying the food and wine. I’ll be missing this tomorrow, despite the internet challenges. Around 8:15 we realized we were missing 90-day Fiance so we turned that on. It’s such a train wreck, and I’m the only one who really watches it on a regular basis. I doubt everyone is going to make it until 10pm, but I will <g>.
Today was another nice day. It’s amazing how quickly the days fly by on vacation – that’s the only negative aspect. Tomorrow we all head home, with Vickie having the longer drive. Holli & I will do breakfast at Hilton Head Diner and will probably be out the door before Vickie. She’s not planning to join us for breakfast.

Thank you for a fantastic trip report, you have given me lots of ideas for our summer trip. Husband and I enjoy hikes, though in the summer we may not be so ambitious. I think we did hike the Audubon trail before though.
