Does anyone else feel that Disney gives out too many of those buttons? I understand that some people want them and that is fine, but perhaps it should just be by request.
I feel like it used to be by request and now it seems they are itching to give them out everywhere - the hotels, the restaurants, and the parks. I specifically tell them I don't want a button. But even with that, I've had many cast members insist and still give me one (for my birthday). I just ended up tossing them in the trash and can't help but think of the waste. And I feel like if I don't pre-emptively say that I don't want a button, it will just happen. So I also can't help but wonder how many other people don't want them, but just end up with them because they weren't vocal about saying 'no.'
Again, I have no problem with Disney giving them out if a guest requests one. I just don't want them handing them out like candy.

It makes people feel special, it doesn't bother me or excite me. Disney has been eliminating other "free" stuff, moving them to virtual or charging you. One would think their days are numbered at WDW.

…remember when they had a different button for each Theme Park ? Didn’t bother to “keep” any of them cause I figured they would never discontinue them . Wish I had kept mine and not taken them for granted as if they weren’t special…

I like them. They make everyone who wants one feel special, whether a birthday, anniversary or beating cancer.
We each had one last trip, even though the actual events we were celebrating had passed - thanks to Covid. So DS wore his 21st birthday button on the day he had chosen to be his celebration day. And DH and I wore ours when we went for our “anniversary” dinner. Ironically my eldest who really did have his birthday there didn’t wear his for more than an hour or so - and that was only for my sake!
I’ve kept all ours from the trips.

I hadn't noticed.
But, if they are doing it, it creates an extra amount of waste, so a bad idea to do it without explicit request. And I would sure hope that fewer would request this.
Cheers.

I just want to be clear that I'm not against the buttons and I think they can be great for many. But I had a recent experience where they found out it was my birthday (at hotel check in and at restaurants), I had to state multiple times that I and my group did not need/want a button. Yet, at one of the dinners, they gave me no option and still gave me one. At least I was successful in convincing them that my whole group didn't need one.

We've always had to ask for the buttons and we keep them as souv's. DH wanted one the trip after he retired and I kept forgetting to ask.... He still tells me about it.

Actually never received a button. I’m good with that.

I've toyed from time to time with designed a tee shirt for the parks based on photos of different buttons collected on different trips to spell out something or make a big Mickey image. Maybe one day.
My favorite button is my Honorary Citizen of Walt Disney World Resort button! (https://ayearofdisney.com/2016/06/24/becoming-a-disney-world-citizen/)

But you have to actively decide to purchase a balloon. The buttons are given out for free, at multiple locations, and even without asking. I would venture far more waste is produced with the buttons than the balloons.

I would venture far more waste is produced with the buttons than the balloons. In this case, agreed. I had not realized that all balloons were purchased, although I guess that makes sense. The idea of Disney actually giving away pins is startling enough. Giving away balloons, for any occasion, is that much less likely
Yes, because people will accept, and then discard, free things, that is likely more waste. Balloons are far worse than buttons, but volume does matter.
Cheers.

It may be rare, but Disney does sometimes give balloons away. I can think of at least two late evenings when DD was little that we were given balloons. Both times, we were heading out of park towards closing time with DD asleep in her stroller. Randomly, CMs stopped us to give us a balloon for the baby. I can recall DD also being given a balloon when checking into SSR one time. And the first time we stayed AKL, she was given a little tiara. We kept that for years! She loved pulling it out and playing with it.
I get the waste point. Understood. But more people may keep those than is being suggested. The buttons are fun. I had almost all of mine pinned to a board for the fun memories. I kept that board in my office at work for years! We still have that board in storage somewhere, just waiting for the time to pull them out again.

Maybe I’m in the minority of those who don’t keep the buttons. As a very frequent visitor to DL, my family had easily tossed a couple of hundred buttons before we had to start actively refusing them a few years ago.
