It's definitely not set to "avoid toll roads", as I am willing to pay for speed and/or convenience.

This isn't close to the resort, but if coming from MCO, we almost always stop at the Publix on Landstar Blvd. I believe it's the first or second exit off 417 as you leave the airport headed towards Disney. There's a Walmart Neighborhood Market there too, if that's your thing. We always take 417 to Disney and rarely hit traffic. Maybe this should be a separate thread, but I'd like to read some thoughts about 528 vs. 417 from MCO to WDW. We've always taken 528 to I-4, and as we all know, traffic on I-4 sucks. We take whichever Waze tells us to take. Despite all the criticism of Waze here, it was accurate pretty much to the minute in and out of MCO.
Both times it suggested 528, indicating that 417 was longer. We have no preference.
Also, if we need to get gas, the Jetport exit is easy on/easy off. As we did less than 75 miles, I just let Avis fill the tank for $15.99.
As for the main topic here, we did end up at the Winn Dixie that helenabear suggested and we loved it. Great selection, many things on sale for the cost of a phone number and email with no associated spam and very small crowds.
Cheers.

417 is a toll road, I wonder if you have "avoid tolls" turned on? 528 takes you to I-4 which is a toll road as well. It is the cheaper of the two but almost always messy. On the way in, Waze did not take us to I4 from 528, but went to I Drive, which was smooth sailing.
When we left, it did suggest I4, and this was fine. Worth the $2.03 in tolls.
Cheers.

Definitely not telling people what to do, just what I avoid every single time and my experiences with being around Florida beyond just Disney stuff. I don't even use GPS to get from MCO any longer. Not even TPA unless during rush hour as there were about 3 decent routes to where our house was and such. My family knows my disdain of I4 though and why south exit will always be my choice. With the transponders tolls mean little to me and it's worth it to pay more for smoother sailing even when there are accidents.

Circling back here as we leave for WDW on Tuesday. In the end, we chose the Winn Dixie on S. Apopka Vineland Rd. that helenabear suggested above. We liked this quite a bit for travel (some suckage, but easy to the resort) and the lack of crowds. We're gonna visit this one again on Tuesday. Cheers.

Definitely my go to in the area for the reasons you said. Service too (found out when accidentally leaving a bag behind)

That one is my choice for a quick run to get stuff when we stay at OKW, you can even take back roads to avoid those lights by the Springs. I also like to hit that ABC liquors right there, too.
It was recently announced that Aldi is buying the company that owns Winn-Dixie (pending gov't approval) and they are planning to convert a certain number of those stores to the Aldi format. They announced a timeframe of 2024. I wonder if the Winn-Dixie we are talking about will eventually become an Aldi. I don't go to Aldi all that often, but I used to in the past...I want certain brands for certain things and I know where to get them. And when it's vacation time, wife won't be happy if I come home with cases of "Diet Aldi Cola" for instance. Nor do I want their fake Mtn Dew...I want the fake Dew from Walmart hee hee.
