It’s interesting the OP already had booked a cruise … probably more than a year ago .
When I first became a Disney addict …rarely had to plan far in advance for DL or WDW but I do remember frustration with locals that would book the Saturday night but not the Friday or Sunday … so it was really hard to plan hotels or DL resort stays in Anaheim . I thought there should have been a 2 night minimum stay for those popular dates. The locals also could easily cancel stays for last minute weather problems. I recently booked a Harbor Blvd Stay for Halloween night 2023and July 4 th 2024 and was not charged any type of deposit for my confirmation . I am not a local or a regular for Park Place Inn and was very surprised . Doesn’t everybody charge a deposit in advance ?
Anyway , Do not be surprised with Walkers or availability if you don’t monitor School Calendars and Airlines advance booking and school sports including cheer and dance and High School Band performances ,Run Disney , along with government holidays, etc. And don’t forget about SkyLiner closure and refurbs that extend longer than reported for DVC, etc. And Spring Break for Colleges and high schools, etc.

I hunt and grab. Early December is always tough and has been since we moved here. The points for rooms are wonderful that time of year. I cannot ever walk as the first night is almost always gone before the day even hits. I don’t like booking Friday or Saturday nights because they are more points and that’s for value studios at Jambo.
My birthday when it falls on a weekend is tough too because it’s during Wine and Dine. I was lucky in 2023. I didn’t try for 2024 as it is on a Sunday and we can drive down to have lunch for the big milestone this year. But, I had never been in the parks on the actual day so I grabbed it, but that bucket list item is done now.
I’ve had very good luck with waitlisting too for what I’m looking for.

Also , this year for the first time , Texas changed up their holiday schedule and they Do Not return to school until January 10 ! Similar to Californias… I think Florida is already back to school … So I wonder how many other States are going for a later return date . Teachers vote on the holiday calendar yearly and maybe they thought this would be less competition and more discounts , but the yearly Run Disney marathon is also very popular. Today driving past the USO exits from WDW on Interstate 4 … seriously dangerous with the ramps extending deeply into the traffic going 70-80 mph. And many reports of accidents …This morning at 8:30 a.m. Very busy time of the year. Article on USAToday , today, suggests booking Today for flights ! We just returned last night and can confirm it is still very crowded after NYE.

That people are walking and making it harder for them to book their room. You should see what they're saying about people who rent their points to. They're really making my look for the positive and happy side of life mantra I'm trying to follow really hard sometimes Well, it is Facebook. Complaining about the folks willing to put in the legwork for something that they want to just be waiting for them. Pretty much what I was led to believe about Facebook.
Cheers.
We do too- though seems like we're seeing the impact of the walking to get those holiday reservations. I didn't realize it started a month early. But hoping all clears out for us in a few more days as the walking moves forward and drops the days we want. Or we'll adjust with a few days in a more expensive view or another resort. Or something off property if we really have to. But we really like the walking from BWV. Last trip, we got in 99 miles of walking- even DS (8).
DW is in a few facebook groups and is also seeing it has gotten very angry. All the props to anyone moderating- feels things like that (and coaching and refereeing) have gotten harder and more thankless than they used to be with how more people treat others. Really unfair.

As time goes on, people loom more and more to blame someone else for things.
When I was a kid (yeah, a lot of stories start this way ), if I climbed a tree, fell off and broke my arm, my mom would say: What are you stupid? I hope it hurts so you'll learn not to be so stupid next time.
Nowadays, people will try to sue the tree, the park, the city and any witnesses who didn't catch the kid before s/he hit the ground.
And the anonymity of the internet makes it that much easier. And I'll punch anyone who disagrees with me...
Cheers.

We're going on multiple days in a row of people ranting about walking or renting their points out. One of the last posts that we approved, I posted immediately saying don't turn this into a nasty fight. I actually had to remove a post and mute someone yesterday for just being nasty and when I just said hey let's be nice and not be rude to others I got to beautiful sarcastic response in return. Those seem to be the biggest angering types of posts since December became open for booking. I blame some of it on post holiday grump, but it is pretty bad this year! Though nothing is as bad as the covid debates where people were just horrible to each other. Tons of deleting going on during that time. I just don't see the point in getting worked up over issues like that. I'll either change what I book or I will join the masses and walk. I'll rent if I have any leftover points. Or maybe if I can't decide what to do with my okw points I might rent them for a while. And gasp I'll be one of the evils too LOL

As long as DVC allows walking, I have no issues. They make the rules. If a specific resort and dates are important to me, then I walk the reservation. I just did it for Vero in August because we've noticed that the resort has been pretty full the last few trips and we like the first week in August.

We go by the MK parking lot several times a week and the crowds have been heavy this week but that is probably due to a short week with NY being on Monday and an overlap with Marathon weekend. DW is in a few facebook groups and is also seeing it has gotten very angry. Ain't that the truth! Back to walking ressies; Disney doesn't seem to see an issue with this because they could stop it by limiting how many modifications that you can make to a reservation before you have to cancel and start again. Personally it is not an issue with us because we are typically only looking for one or two days and we almost always get what we want by wait listing.

Thx for heads up, but missed. Kept checking every couple hours yesterday, but couldn't find. But added the 5th today as the rest of the walking moved forward. So should be all good in a few days. or worst case will find another spot for end of our trip . Most important, getting the first part booked has severely reduced DW's anxiety.

We always go 5 nights the first week of Dec. This year has been the most difficult to book yet. Yippee this morning I finally got all 5 nights at BWV standard view studio. Every morning I started trying at 8:00 to pick up a night that the walkers dropped. I now have 5 individual reservations that will need to be merged into one. I know standard view at BWV is in demand but we also own at BC and AKL and they didn’t have availability either.

I know this isn't a timely means of communication for that kind of message. I almost feel like I teased you! I actually went to check because we were seeing people in other forums complaining about walkers blocking them from booking as well. We saw evidence at a couple of resorts. Then I checked AKV: lots of space there!

My son and his wife have asked to take some friends down to WDW Dec 2024 and they wanted to stay at either VGF or BLT. When it got to a few days before their time to book, I noticed that there was nothing in a standard view at VGF (first choice) was available, but Lake View was. I feel that the Lake view at VGF is definitely not worth the extra points, but was willing to have them book that just so they had a confirmed reservation. I taught him how to book and then walk the next few days and he was eventually able to get a standard view and walk it for a couple of days. I feel no guilt at all in having him do this as it saved me about 79 points, I think, for a two-bedroom. And I would do it again if necessary,
